Remote-doping scattering and the local field corrections in the 2D electron system in a modulation-doped Si/SiGe quantum well

The small, about 30% magnetoresistance at the onset of full spin polarization in the 2D electron system in a modulation-doped Si/SiGe quantum well gives evidence that it is the remote doping that determines the transport scattering time. Measurements of the mobility in this strongly-interacting electron system with remote-doping scattering allow us to arrive at a conclusion that the Hubbard form underestimates the local field corrections by about a factor of 2.     

Multifunctional Calix[4]arenes Containing Pendant Amide and Phosphoryl Groups: Their Use as Extracting Agents and Carriers for Alkali Cations

The complexing, extracting and mobile carrier properties of the tetra(phosphine oxide)-calix[4]arene 1 and the hybrid diamide-di(phosphine oxide)-calix[4]arene 2 were studied. Both ligands give 1 : 1 complexes with alkali cations in THF as shown by the picrate method. 1H NMR experiments were run to follow encapsulation of sodium and potassium cations. The corresponding spectra indicate C2-symmetrical structure. The observed extraction orders of the alkali picrates were as follows K+>Rb+>Li+>Cs+>Na+ for 1 and Li+>Na+>K+>Rb++ for 2. Transport kinetics was analysed by means of a model which assumes pure diffusion and which allows the evaluation of mass transfer coefficients in all systems. These coefficients and their influences on the transport rate are discussed in terms of size of the transporting species in the liquid membrane.     

The structure of cyclopentene oxide determined by gas phase electron diffraction

The r_g structure of cyclopentene oxide has been determined by the simultaneous least squares analysis of electron diffraction and microwave spectroscopic data. The investigation has reaffirmed previous studies indicating that the molecule prefers a boat conformation. The methylene and epoxide flap angles obtained are 152.3±2.1° and 104.7±1.0° respectively. Other structural parameters determined are: r_g (C-H avg.) = 1.120±0.004 Å; r_g (C-C avg.) = 1.538±0.002 Å; r_g (C-O) = 1.443±0.003 Å, and r_g (C-C) = 1.482±0.004 Å for the carbon-carbon bond in the three membered epoxide ring. These results compare favorably with the reported structures of ethylene oxide and cyclohexene oxide. A tentative rationalization of the unusual boat conformation is also offered.     

Practical asymmetric enzymatic reduction through discovery of a dehydrogenase-compatible biphasic reaction media

[reaction: see text] An enzyme-compatible biphasic reaction media for the asymmetric biocatalytic reduction of ketones with in situ cofactor regeneration has been developed. In this biphasic reaction media, which is advantageous for reactions at higher substrate concentrations, both enzymes (alcohol dehydrogenase and FDH from Candida boidinii) remain stable. The reductions with poorly water-soluble ketones were carried out at substrate concentrations of 10-200 mM, and the optically active (S)-alcohols were formed with moderate to good conversions and with up to >99% ee.     

[3+2]-cycloreactions of 1,2-diacylcyclopropenes with ynamines. Aminofurane- versus aminocyclopentadiene-formation

Electron deficient 1,2-diacylcyclopropenes represent synthetic equivalent for both acylcarbenes and vinylcarbenes; in their cycloreaction with ynamines aminofuranes and/or aminocyclopentadienes are formed.     

Heterocyclic Spiro-naphthalenones. Part III. Synthesis and reactions of some spiro [naphthalene-1,2′-pyrrolidin]-2-ones and spiro [naphthalene-2,2′-pyrrolidin]-1-ones

The spironaphthalen-2-ones 2, 10 and 18 were prepared by N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) oxidation of 1, 9 and 17 respectively, whereas spironaphthalen-1-ones 24 and 25 were obtained by treating 23 with NBS. The stereoisomeric reduction products 29, 30 and 32 obtained from 24 and 25 , gave the pentacyclic compound 33 on treatment with polyphosphoric acid.     

Almost constant sequences and well-distribution in compact groups

We study the properties of sequences (c _n ) in a compact groupG such that (x _n ) being (weakly) well-distributed implies (c _n x _n ) being (weakly) well-distributed and give a complete characterisation in terms of almost constant sequences as well as a generalisation to non-compact locally compact groups.
