Water tank studies of plume rise and diffusion in a stably stratified layer under calm conditions

Summary Water tank experiments were conducted to investigate plume rise and diffusion of gases discharged from stacks under calm conditions with field wind velocity less than 0.4 m/s with stable thermal stratification. Similarity rules of scaled model experiments were obtained from nondimensional analysis of the fundamental equation. The densimetric Froude number of a plume and the buoyancy ratio of the plume and the atmosphere were varied during the water tank experiments while plume rise height, plume thickness, etc. were measured. It was found that the experimental results could be expressed in terms of these two dimensionless parameters. Papper presented at the GNFAO/EURASAP Meeting, Turin, September 1989. Stable triplex formation using the strong stacking effect of consecutive thionucleoside moieties

In this study, it was found that the arrangement of consecutive thiocarbonyl groups of s(2)T and m(5)s(2)C remarkably stabilized the pre-protonated form of the triplex, and that the stabilization of the pre-protonated form increased the pKa value of a cytosine derivative in the triplex.     

PHOTOBIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF 5-A-LKOXYPSORALENS WITH RESPECT TO THE ACTION ON Escherichia coli

Abstract— Near-UV induced activities of a series of 5-a-lkoxypsoralen derivatives (C₁ to C₈) and 5-h-ydroxypsoralen were compared with respect to lethal, mutagenic and prophage inducing effects on E. coli . Although 5-a-lkoxypsoralen derivatives having an alkoxyl chain longer than C₂ were slightly soluble, their saturated solutions containing their insoluble portion showed the significant photolethal effect on E. coli . 5-E-thoxypsoralen was less photoactive in inducing phenotypic reversion of the arginine auxotrophy than 5-m-ethoxypsoralen but it photoinduced prophage lambda from the lysogenic bacteria as well as 5-m-ethoxypsoralen. Photomutagenesis by the derivatives of C₃ to C₈ could not be detected but ca . 10% of the lysogenic bacteria photoinduced prophage in the presence of the derivatives at the maximum induction.
