Nonlinear Boundary Layers of the Boltzmann Equation: I. Existence

 We study the half-space problem of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation, assigning the Dirichlet data for outgoing particles at the boundary and a Maxwellian as the far field. We will show that the solvability of the problem changes with the Mach number ℳ^∞ of the far Maxwellian. If ℳ^∞<−1, there exists a unique smooth solution connecting the Dirichlet data and the far Maxwellian for any Dirichlet data sufficiently close to the far Maxwellian. Otherwise, such a solution exists only for the Dirichlet data satisfying certain admissible conditions. The set of admissible Dirichlet data forms a smooth manifold of codimension 1 for the case −1<ℳ^∞<0, 4 for 0<ℳ^∞<1 and 5 for ℳ^∞>1, respectively. We also show that the same is true for the linearized problem at the far Maxwellian, and the manifold is, then, a hyperplane. The proof is essentially based on the macro-micro or hydrodynamics-kinetic decomposition of solutions combined with an artificial damping term and a spatially exponential decay weight. Diversification of shotgun process

Three protocols for shotgun process are put forth in which simultaneous multi-fold reactions occur exclusively to each other. The first one involves simple combination of selective and non-selective reactions. Even if the simple protocol fails to give rise to the high selectivity, satisfactory outcome can be achieved by kinetic control or adjustment of functional groups.     

Synthesis and antitumor activities of mitomycin C (1----3)-beta-D-glucan conjugate.

The conjugate of mitomycin C (MMC) with linear (1----3)-beta-D-glucan from Alcaligenes faecalis var. myxogenes IFO 13140 was synthesized and its antitumor activities investigated. The conjugate (MMC-carboxymethylated linear (1----3)-beta-D-glucan (CMPS)) was obtained by treatment of CMPS with MMC in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide. In vitro cytotoxicity of MMC-CMPS against L1210 leukemia cells was similar to that of MMC. In i.p.-i.p. system in vivo against P388 leukemia in mice, the maximum increase of MMC-CMPS conjugate in life span (ILSmax) was higher than that of MMC but the therapeutic index was reduced. However, the antitumor activity of MMC-CMPS conjugate against subcutaneously implanted sarcoma 180 solid tumor in mice by i.p. administration was similar to that of MMC at a dose of 1.5 mg eq MMC/kg/d x 7 and the reduction of the number of leukocytes caused by MMC was suppressed by attaching MMC to CMPS. In addition, on assay using serum of sarcoma 180 solid tumor-bearing mice with injection of MMC-CMPS conjugate, a drastic loss of tumor cells and an increase in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were observed. This result suggested that MMC-CMPS conjugate induced tumor-regressing factor similar to CMPS.     

One‐Shot Double Elimination Process: A Practical and Concise Protocol for Diaryl Acetylenes

A variety of diaryl acetylenes were obtained in good yields when lithium hexamethyldisilazide was added to a solution of arylmethyl sulfone, aryl aldehyde, and chlorodiethylphosphate in THF. In this one‐shot process, a number of transformations such as aldol reaction, phosphorylation of aldolate, and double elimination of the resulting β‐substituted sulfone proceeded successively to afford the desired acetylenes. The one‐shot process was accelerated by the substitution of halogen atoms on the phenyl groups, and unsymmetrically substituted diaryl acetylenes were obtained without contamination of the dehalogenated products. Diaryl acetylenes with other substituents such as CF₃, ethoxycarbonyl, dimethylamino, TMS‐acetylene groups, as well as pyridinyl and thienyl moieties were also accessible with this method. However, methoxy‐substituted compounds were obtained in moderate yields under the same conditions, but the yields were increased when lithium diisopropylamide was used instead.     

In Situ Processing of Nano Crystalline Oxide Particles/Polymer Hybrid

Nano sized crystalline particles/polymer hybrids were synthesized form designed metal-organic precursors. The newly developed method is composed of the synthesis of organic matrix by polymerization and the in situ nucleation and growth of crystalline oxide particles in the organic matrix below 100°C. The design of metal-organic precursor modified with polymerizable ligand and the selection of reaction conditions does influence the size and crystallinity of ceramic particles in organic matrix. The nano-sized magnetic particle/polymer hybrid exhibits the interesting feature of superparamagnetism and quantum size effect. The crystalline particles of BaTiO₃/, PbTiO₃/, and KNbO₃/polymer hybrids behave to be dielectric and show the typical electro-rheological behavior.     

Facile routes to natural acyclic polyenes syntheses of spilanthol and trail pheromone for termite

The synthetic procedures for spilanthol and trail-following pheromone for a southern subterranean termite were described. The syntheses heavily depend on the new diene synthesis using titanium reagent.
