Synthesis of 8,9-dioxabicyclo[5.2.1]decane derivatives from cyclooctene

Singlet oxygenation of cyclooctene gives 2-cyclooctenyl hydroperoxide which affords isomeric 2, $\text{cis}$-10-dibromo-8,9-dioxabicyclo[5.2.1]decanes on treatment with mercury(II) trifluoroacetate then bromine, and yields $\text{cis}$-10-bromo-8,9-dioxabicyclo[5.2.1]decane on treatment with bromine then silver trifluoroacetate.     

Learning and Assessing Mathematics through Reading and Writing

Students learn mathematics more effectively and more deeply when reading and writing is directed at learning mathematics. Although reading and writing in mathematics may necessitate more skills and practice to master, the mathematical learning derived from reading and writing mathematics far outweighs the burden it places on teachers and students. This paper explores the vital role of purposeful reading and writing in the mathematics classroom and outlines some techniques to promote successful integration of reading and writing in mathematics.     

Few-valence-particle excitations around doubly magic 132Sn

Prompt γ-ray cascades in neutron-rich nuclei around doubly-magic ¹³²Sn have been studied using a ²⁴⁸Cm fission source. Yrast states located in the N = 82 isotones ¹³⁴Te and ¹³⁵I are interpreted as valence proton and neutron particle-hole core excitations with the help of shell model calculations employing empirical nucleon-nucleon interactions from both ¹³²Sn and ²⁰⁸Pb regions.     

Study of spontaneous fission with EUROGAM

Prompt γ radiation following spontaneous fission has been measured using the EUROGAM 2 array. Using these data and newly developed analysis techniques a number of subjects were studied, which are briefly discussed. One of these subjects, shape transition in A≈100 Sr and Zr nuclei is discussed in more detail. Quadrupole moments were determined for rotational bands in the N=58,59,60,62 and 64 Sr and Zr isotopes. Deformation parameters, which increase from β₂ ≈ 0.1 at N=56 to β₂ ≈ 0.4 at N=64, suggest that in strontium and zirconium isotopes shape change happens gradually between N=56 and N=62 and is probably due to an occupancy of three or more deformation-driving orbitals of h_11/2 parentage.     

Some comments on the thermal stability of substituted ammonium,phosphonium, and arsonium permanganates and their use in alkane oxidation

Tetraethyl- and tetrabutylammonium permanganate are less prone to explosive decomposition when heated than are benzyl(triethyl)ammonium and methyl-(triphenyl) phosphonium permanganate and are about equally effective as oxidants for the conversion of alkanes into alcohol and ketones.     

High-spin states in the T z = −1/2 nucleus 55Ni

High-spin states of the isospin T _z = ? 1/2 nucleus ⁵⁵Ni have been identified for the first time by means of the reaction ²⁸Si(³⁶Ar,2αn) at 143 MeV beam energy. The Gammasphere array together with ancillary detectors was used to detect γ rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The level scheme of ⁵⁵Ni comprising four transitions is compared to its mirror partner ⁵⁵Co and shell-model calculations in the fp shell.
