Visual spatial memory is enhanced in female rats (but inhibited in males) by dietary soy phytoestrogens

Background  

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined.     

The application of homotopy analysis method to solve nonlinear differential equation governing Jeffery–Hamel flow

In this paper Jeffery–Hamel flow has been studied and its nonlinear ordinary differential equation has been solved through homotopy analysis method (HAM). The obtained solution in comparison with the numerical ones represents a remarkable accuracy. The results also indicate that HAM can provide us with a convenient way to control and adjust the convergence region.     

Neuromodulation by soy diets or equol: Anti-depressive &; anti-obesity-like influences,age- &; hormone-dependent effects

Background  

Soy-derived isoflavones potentially protect against obesity and depression. In five different studies we examined the influence of soy-containing diets or equol injections on depression, serotonin levels, body weight gain (BW) and white adipose tissue (WAT) deposition in female Long-Evans rats at various stages of life [rats were intact, ovariectomized or experienced natural ovarian failure (NOF)].     

Solid-phase extraction on silica cartridges as an aid to platelet-activating factor enrichment and analysis

Solid-phase extraction methods using pre-packed silica cartridges and various elution solvents have been developed and evaluated as chromatographic means to enrich biological lipid extracts for platelet-activating factor (PAF). The optimized procedure advanced selectively removed the major tissue/blood neutral lipids and non-choline-containing phospholipids from complex lipid mixtures and yielded thereby a choline phospholipid fraction markedly enriched in bioactive PAF. Some tested solid-phase extraction procedures, while capable of resolving choline phospholipids from other polar and non-polar species, were detrimental to PAF's bioactivity and evidenced considerable loss or degradation of this analyte. It is concluded that, with solvents of appropriate composition, strength and polarity, solid-phase extraction on silica cartridges has several unique advantages over conventional thin-layer and column chromatographic methods presently in use for PAF enrichment from biological sources.     

hCB2 ligand-interaction landscape: cysteine residues critical to biarylpyrazole antagonist binding motif and receptor modulation

The human cannabinoid 2 GPCR (hCB2) is a prime therapeutic target. To define potential cysteine-related binding motifs critical to hCB2-ligand interaction, a library of hCB2 cysteine-substitution mutants and a novel, high-affinity biarylpyrazole hCB2 antagonist/inverse agonist (AM1336) functionalized to serve as a covalent affinity probe to target cysteine residues within (or in the microenvironment of) its hCB2 binding pocket were generated. The data provide direct experimental demonstration that both hCB2 TMH7 cysteines [i.e., C7.38(284) and C7.42(288)] are critical to optimal hCB2-AM1336 binding interaction and AM1336 pharmacological activity in a cell-based functional assay (cAMP formation). Elongating the AM1336 aliphatic side chain generated another novel?hCB2 inverse agonist that binds covalently and selectively to C7.42(288) only. Identification of specific cysteine residues critical to hCB2 ligand interaction and function informs the structure-based design of hCB2-targeted medicines.     

The physics of diamond

The accurate measurement of the thermal conductivity of metals still poses considerable experimental difficulty. The reasons for this, and the main ways in which the problem has been approached, are summarized. A detailed examination of the development in technique and methods of measurement shows that while most of the steady-state methods introduced over 50 years ago are still being improved, the emphasis in the last few years has been on the development of methods which give more rapid results, particularly at high temperatures.
