Infima and complements in the lattice of quasi-uniformities

We show that the infimum of any family of proximally symmetric quasi-uniformities is proximally symmetric, while the supremum of two proximally symmetric quasi-uniformities need not be proximally symmetric. On the other hand, the supremum of any family of transitive quasi-uniformities is transitive, while there are transitive quasi-uniformities whose infimum with their conjugate quasi-uniformity is not transitive. Moreover we present two examples that show that neither the supremum topology nor the infimum topology of two transitive topologies need be transitive. Finally, we prove that several operations one can perform on and between quasi-uniformities preserve the property of having a complement.     

Development of a screening method for cocaine and cocaine metabolites in urine using solvent microextraction in conjunction with gas chromatography

A simple, quick and inexpensive screening method for cocaine and cocaine metabolites has been developed. Drug extraction was achieved using the relatively new technique of solvent microextraction (SME). Complete analysis is achieved in 13 min, using, a 6-min extraction with a 2-microl drop followed by separation on a gas chromatograph. The developed procedure was tested as a screening method for cocaine and cocaine metabolites in spiked urine samples. Using SME, concentrations as low as 0.125 microg ml(-1) of cocaine, ecgonine methyl ester, cocaethylene and anhydroecgonine methyl ester were measurable with relative standard deviation values averaging 9.0%.     

Recoil-proton polarization in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration with circularly polarized photons

We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil-proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.     

High resolution spectroscopy of (lambda)(12)B by electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 12C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a ring imaging Cherenkov detector were added to the hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed (Lambda)(12)B spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state s-wave Lambda peak and the 11 MeV p-wave Lambda peak.     

Generation of a Recombinant Full-Length Human Antibody Binding to Botulinum Neurotoxin A

In order to develop a recombinant full-length human anti-botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) antibody, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were collected from three healthy volunteers and induced for BoNT/A-specific immune response by in vitro immunization. The genes encoding human Fd fragment, consisting of antibody heavy chain variable region and constant region 1 with the genes encoding antibody light chain, were cloned from the immunized PBMC. Afterwards, one combinatory human antigen-binding fragment (Fab) library was constructed using a lambda phage vector system. The size of the constructed library was approximately 10⁵ Escherichia coli transformants. After screening the library by BoNT/A antigen using a plaque lifting with immunostaining approach, 55 clones were identified as positive. The Fab gene of the most reactive clone exhibiting particularly strong BoNT/A binding signal was further subcloned into a full-length human IgG1 antibody gene template in an adenoviral expression vector, in which the heavy and light chains were linked by a foot-and-mouth-disease virus-derived 2A self-cleavage peptide under a single promoter. After the full-length human IgG1 was expressed in mammalian cells and purified with protein L column, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the heavy and light chains of the antibody were cleaved completely. The affinity expressed as the dissociation constant (K _d) for the recombinant human antibody to bind to BoNT/A was determined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and results confirmed that the recombinant full-length human antibody retained BoNT/A-binding specificity with K _d value of 10⁻⁷ M.
