124Sn target residues in the interaction of heavy ions at intermediate energies

Cross sections, recoil energy distributions for residues produced by¹⁴N,²⁰Ne,⁴⁰Ar on¹²⁴Sn targets have been measured in the 10–70 MeV/u intermediate energy range. As the projectile energy increases, processes as complete fusion-evaporation, incomplete fusion-evaporation and intranuclear cascade-evaporation participate progressively in the nuclear collisions. Peculiar residues corresponding to a gain of 4, 5 or even 6 protons for the¹²⁴Sn target have been observed in the 30–50 MeV energy range.

The one-pot Darzens condensation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones with enolates of an α-bromo ester or ketone is described.     

An improved error bound for a finite element approximation of a model for phase separation of a multi-component alloy

Using the approach of Rulla (1996 SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 33, 68-87)for analysing the time discretization error and assuming moreregularity on the initial data, we improve on the error boundderived by Barrett and Blowey (1996 IMA J. Numer. Anal. 16,257-287) for a fully practical piecewise linear finite elementapproximation with a backward Euler time discretization of amodel for phase separation of a multi-component alloy.     

Intermolecular Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions using dicobalthexacarbonyl complexed acetylenic acetals

An intermolecular Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction using dicobalthexacarbonyl complexed acetylenic acetals as the electrophile is reported. Employing BF₃-OEt₂ as the Lewis acid with a sulfide as the Lewis base MBH adducts were obtained.     

Systematic trends in the beta minus strength functions of neutron-rich rubidium isotopes

Experimental β^?-strength functions (S_β) are presented for the odd-mass Rb isotope sequence A=89to97. As expected from general nuclear structure considerations, but in contrast to present purely statistical concepts, these strength functions exhibit well separated “pygmy” resonances and a systematic behaviour as a function of mass number and β-decay energy.     

Book Review

A method of estimation of the coefficients of a linear regression model is described as invariant if the basic regression results obtained by the method are unaltered by a location/scale transformation of the data matrix. A necessary and sufficient condition for a method to be invariant is presented. Finally specific methods of estimation are examined for invariance.     

Experimental study of electron impact excitation of multiply charged ions

We report on measurements of angular differential cross sections for the excitation of multiply charged ions by electron impact. An ion beam is crossed by an electron beam; electrons which are inelastically scattered at different angles are identified by their energy loss due to the excitation process. Absolute excitation cross sections are obtained by comparing the signals of the elastic and the inelastic electron-ion scattering. Results obtained for the 3s→3p excitation of Ar⁷⁺ are discussed.
