A new time interval analysis system for the on-line monitoring of artificial radionuclides in airborne dust using a phosfitch type alpha/beta detector

A portable system for high-speed time interval analysis (TIA) method was constructed. The system installed with an original time counting board could record pulse incident time of 1 MHz precisely. During the measurement, calculation of time intervals for all the pulses and on-line display of the results were performed simultaneously. Using this system, the correlated decay events of ²¹⁴Bi to ²¹⁰Po in the airborne dust collected on filter paper were counted, together with a dual-phosphor type alpha/beta detector. A rapidly detective technique of artificial radioactivity under the variations of naturally occurring radioactivities is discussed.     

Analysis of phenothiazines in human body fluids using disk solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography

Seven phenothiazine derivatives, perazine, perphenazine, prochlorperazine, propericiazine, thioproperazine, trifluoperazine, and flupentixol, have been found to be extractable from human plasma and urine samples using disk solid-phase extraction (SPE) with an Empore C18 cartridge. Human plasma and urine (1 mL each) containing the 7 phenothiazine derivatives were mixed with 2 mL of 0.1M NaOH and 7 mL distilled water and then poured into the disk SPE cartridges. The drugs were eluted with 1 mL chloroform- acetonitrile (8 + 2) and determined by liquid chromatography with ammonium formate/formic acid-acetonitrile gradient elution. The detection was performed by ultraviolet absorption at 250 nm. The separation of the 7 phenothiazine derivatives from each other and from impurities was generally satisfactory using a SymmetryShield RP8 column (150 x 2.1 mm id, 3.5 microm particle size). The recoveries of the 7 phenothiazine derivatives spiked into plasma and urine samples were 64.0-89.9% and 65.1-92.1%, respectively. Regression equations for the 7 phenothiazine derivatives showed excellent linearity, with detection limits of 0.021-0.30 microg/mL for plasma and 0.017-0.30 microg/mL for urine. The within-day and day-to-day coefficients of variation for both samples were commonly below 9.0 and 14.9%, respectively.     

Synthesis of Potential Antimicrobial Agents from Maltose. III. Introduction of an Amino Group Into the 3′-Position of 1,6-Anhydro-Disaccharides

Abstract

Regioselective cleavage of 1,6-anhydro-maltose (1) with periodate and the subsequent recyclization with nitromethane gave 1,6-anhydro-3′-deoxy-3′-nitro-disaccharides (3). Three diastereomers, prepared by benzylidenation of 3, were separated by column chromatography. Each of 4′,6′-O-benzylidene derivatives successively underwent debenzylidenation, reduction of the nitro group, and peracetylation to give 3′-acetamido-3′-deoxy-disaccharide derivatives (7, 8, and 9). The configurations of the 3-amino sugar moietres in 7 (D-gluco), 8 (D-manno) and 9 (D-galacto) were determined on the basis of the ¹H NMR data. The main product (7) was further modified to the 6-deoxy-6-nitro derivative.     

Triallylstannyllithium-allyllithium as an initiator for the anionic reversible chain transfer polymerization of 1,3-butadiene

The anionic polymerization of 1,3-butadiene using a novel metalloidal anion initiator, triallylstannyllithium (TALi)-allyllithium (ALi), was studied. The TALi-ALi initiated anionic polymerization of 1,3-butadiene gave the star polymer along with the linear polybutadiene (PBD). The star polymer consisted of three PBD branches and a central tin atom. What is striking is a fact that the number-average molecular weights (M_n) and molecular weight distribution of three PBD branches and linear PBD were almost identical. A reversible chain transfer polymerization mechanism, which includes the equilibrium between tri(macroallyl)-stannyllithium and macroallylic anion, is proposed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Generation of a novel monoclonal antibody against cortisol-[C-4]-bovine serum albumin conjugate: application to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for urinary and serum cortisol.

Measurement of cortisol levels in body fluids is important for monitoring pituitary gland and adrenal functions. To develop a specific and standardized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a novel monoclonal anti-cortisol antibody has been generated using a reasonably designed haptenic derivative. Spleen cells were prepared from the BALB/c or A/J mouse, which had repeatedly been immunized with a conjugate of 4-(2-carboxyethylthio)cortisol (CET) and bovine serum albumin, to be fused with P3/NS1/1-Ag4-1 myeloma cells. After four fusion experiments, one hybridoma clone secreting a practical antibody has been established. The resulting monoclonal antibody CS#38 (isotype gamma1, kappa) showed an affinity constant (K(a)) for cortisol of 1 x 10(9) M(-1) and provided a practical calibration curve (detection limit, 0.26 ng per assay) in a homologous ELISA system employing horseradish peroxidase-labeled CET as a labeled antigen. Cross-reactivities with related C-21 steroids were acceptably low: 11-deoxycortisol (4.3%), cortisone (4.0%), corticosterone (1.9%), progesterone (1.6%), 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (12%), 6beta-hydroxycortisol (8.4%), and tetrahydrocortisol (< 0.1%). Urinary and serum cortisol levels of healthy volunteers were determined by this method after methylene chloride extraction to be 39.0 +/- 17.0 microg/day (n = 7) and 80.8 +/- 38.9 ng/mL (n = 10), respectively, both of which are in the reference range.     

Spin gap of a pressure-induced superconductor Sr2Ca12Cu24O41 at an optimum pressure of 3.8 GPa

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on ⁶³Cu nuclei was performed in a pressure-induced superconductor Sr₂Ca₁₂Cu₂₄O₄₁ at an optimum pressure of 3.8 GPa. A pressure of 3.8 GPa was achieved by improving a piston-cylinder-type pressure cell and developing a NMR probe with a steady-load control system. We found that the spin gap still exists even at the optimum pressure. The spin gap was almost the same at pressures below 3.5 GPa on the pressure-temperature phase diagram, whereas it decreased rather drastically above 3.5 GPa.     

Synthesis of Porphyrinquinone and Doubly‐Fused Diporphyrin Quinone Through Oxidation of Diarylporphyrins Using a Hypervalent Iodine Compound

Treatment of a meso‐diarylporphyrin with PhI(OAc)₂ in the presence of BF₃ ? OEt₂ and propionic acid affords the corresponding porphyrinquinone in a high yield (91%). A novel quinone derived from meso‐meso β–β doubly‐fused diporphyrin was obtained as the sole byproduct (16% yield), which exhibits strong panchromatic absorption between 300 and 1000 nm. It has a low HOMO‐LUMO gap owing to expanded and low‐symmetry π‐planes.
