Bi(TFA)3-[nbp]FeCl4: a new, efficient and reusable promoter system for the synthesis of 4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives

4(3H)-Quinazolinones have been synthesized in high to excellent yields through the one-pot condensation of anthranilic acid, trimethyl orthoformate and primary amines in the presence of 5 mol % of Bi(TFA)₃ immobilized on [nbp]FeCl₄ as a room temperature ionic liquid.     

Passive control of the flow around a square cylinder using porous media

The passive control of bluff body flows using porous media is investigated by means of the penalization method. This method is used to create intermediate porous media between solid obstacles and the fluid in order to modify the boundary layer behaviour. The study covers a wide range of two‐dimensional flows from low transitional flow to fully established turbulence by direct numerical simulation of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. A parametric study is performed to illustrate the effect of the porous layer permeability and thickness on the passive control. The numerical results reveal the ability of porous media to both regularize the flow and to reduce the drag forces up to 30%. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The use of Nafion-H® as an efficient catalyst for the direct conversion of primary and secondary trimethylsilyl ethers to their corresponding ethers under mild and heterogeneous conditions

Primary and secondary trimethylsilyl ethers were converted to their corresponding ethers in the presence Nafion-H® with good to excellent yields under mild and heterogeneous conditions.     

Selective extraction of benzoic acid from landfill leachate by solid-phase extraction and ion-exchange chromatography

In this work a simple method was described for selective extraction of benzoic acid from landfill leachate samples. The samples were submitted to solid-phase extraction (SPE) with XAD-4 resin as the stationary phase and ion-exchange chromatography (IEC) using the ion-exchange resin Amberlyst A-27. The instrumental analysis was performed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MSD). Benzoic acid was isolated, identified and quantified. The extraction process is rapid, simple and of low cost. It was also environmental friendly, that is, it was used a minimum amounts of hazardous organic solvents and produced also minimum quantities of residues.     

Molybdenum (VI)‐functionalized UiO‐66 provides an efficient heterogeneous nanocatalyst in oxidation reactions

A novel heterogeneous nanocatalyst was established by supporting molybdenum (VI) on Zr₆ nodes in the structure of the well‐known UiO‐66 metal–organic framework (MOF). The structure of the UiO‐66 before and after Mo (VI) immobilization was confirmed with XRD, DR‐FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy, and the presence and amount of Mo (VI) was identified by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. TEM imaging confirmed the absence of Mo clusters on the MOF surface, while SEM confirmed that the appearance of the MOF has not changed upon immobilizing the Mo (VI) catalyst. BET adsorption measurements were used to confirm the porosity of the catalyst. The catalytic activity of this heterogeneous catalyst was investigated in oxidation of sulfides with H₂O₂ in acetonitrile and oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene. Easy work up, convenient and steady reuse and high activity and selectivity are prominent properties of this new hybrid material.     

Acidified,Wet, Silica-Supported Tetrabutylammonium Periodate: A Convenient and Mild Reagent for Conversion of Thioamides to Their Corresponding Amides Under Solvent-Free Conditions

A series of thioamides are transformed to their corresponding oxo analogues in good to excellent yields with acidified, wet, silica-supported tetrabutylammonium periodate under solvent-free conditions.     

An efficient,expeditious, and diastereoselective one-pot pseudo-five-component reaction for the synthesis of new bis-Betti bases under catalyst-free conditions

A novel, diastereoselective, one-pot synthesis of new bis-Betti bases via condensation of dihydroxynaphthalene, two equivalents of aryl aldehydes, and two equivalents of 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole is reported. Conversion into the adducts was almost quantitative without the use of solvent or catalyst. The reaction conditions are very simple and enable easy isolation of the product.     

Synthesis of oxo-Phosphoranylidene Aminobenzoic Acid Derivatives by a Multicomponent Reaction

2-Aminobenzoic acids or 4-aminobenzoic acid react with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate/triphenylphosphine in less than 20 min at 15–25°C to produce new organic phosphorus compounds in good to excellent yields. The conversion occurs with selective N- over O-alkylation of the amino group and isolation of the products is accomplished simply by filtration.     

Oxidation of 1,4-Dihydropyridines under Mild and Heterogeneous Conditions

A combination of NaHSO₄.H₂O and NaNO₂ in the presence of wet SiO₂ was used as an effective oxidizing agent for the oxidation of dihydropyridines to their corresponding pyridine derivatives at room temperature with excellent yields.     

A new rearranged tricyclic abietane diterpenoid from Salvia chloroleuca Rech. f. & Allen

Phytochemical investigation of the roots of Salvia chloroleuca led to the isolation and identification of a new rearranged abietane diterpenoid (1). Its structure was elucidated by interpretation of the 1D and 2D NMR spectra and completed by the analysis of the HR-ESI-MS data. Compound 1 is the secondly reported compound on a rearranged tricyclic abietane (4,5-seco-5,10-friedo-abietane) diterpenoid with a ketal functionality between C-2 and C-11. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of 1 was also proposed.
