Heuristic Algorithms and Scatter Search for the Cardinality Constrained P||Cmax Problem

We consider the generalization of the classical P||C_max problem (assign n jobs to m identical parallel processors by minimizing the makespan) arising when the number of jobs that can be assigned to each processor cannot exceed a given integer k. The problem is strongly NP-hard for any fixed k > 2. We briefly survey lower and upper bounds from the literature. We introduce greedy heuristics, local search and a scatter search approach. The effectiveness of these approaches is evaluated through extensive computational comparison with a depth-first branch-and-bound algorithm that includes new lower bounds and dominance criteria.     

Stereoselective nucleophilic addition reactions to nitro sugars

Nucleophile(s) almost exclusively added from the equatorial side of 2-nitro-β-$\text{D}$-2-enopyranoside and the axial side of 2-nitro-$\text{D}$-$\text{ribo}$-1-enitol. On the other hand, methoxide and $\text{tert}$-butyl peroxide ions approached from the equatorial side of 2-nitro-α-$\text{D}$-2-enopyranoside, whereas methanol and hydrogen peroxide ion from the axial side.     

Electromagnetic fission of238U at 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon

Electromagnetic fission of²³⁸U projectiles at E/A =600 and 1000 MeV was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer at the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS. Seven different targets (Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au and U) were used. By considering only those fission events where the two charges added up to 92, most of the nuclear interactions were excluded. The nuclear contributions to the measured fission cross sections were determined by extrapolating from beryllium to the heavier targets with the concept of factorization. The obtained cross sections for electromagnetic fission are well reproduced by extended Weizsäcker-Williams calculations which include E1 and E2 excitations. The asymmetry of the fission fragments' charge distribution gives evidence for the excitation of the double giant-dipole resonance in uranium.Communicated by V. Metag     

Synthesis of diazepinoquinoxalines and imidazolobenzopteridines

Diazepinoquinoxalines 3, 4 and imidazolobenzopteridines 5, 6a-d, 7a-d, 8, 9 were synthesized from 3-allylamino-6,7-dimethyl-2-quinoxalinecarboxamide ( 1 ) and 2-allylamino-6,7-dimethyl-3,4-dihydrobenzo[g]pteridin-4-one ( 2 ) by the intramolecular cyclization using phenylselenenyl chloride.     

Synthesis and central nervous system stimulant activity of 5,8-methanoquinazolines fused with imidazole,thiadiazole, pyrimidine and 1,3,5-triazine

5,8-Methanoquinazolines fused with imidazoles 4a-4b , thiadiazoles 5–6 , pyrimidines 7, 9, 11 and 12 , and 1,3,5-triazine 13 were prepared starting from (5R,8S)-2-amino-8,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methanoquinazoline 3 . Most compounds possessed central nervous system stimulant activities.     

Synthesis and central nervous system stimulant activity of camphor-1,2,4-benzotriazines fused with five and six-membered heterocycles

Novel camphor-1,2,4-triazines fused with imidazole 2–3 , thiadiazole 4 , 1,2,4-triazole 7 , pyrimidine 9–13 and 1,3,5-triazine 14 , were synthesized starting from (5R,8S)-3-amino-5,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methano-1,2,4-benzotriazine 1 . Evaluation of central nervous system stimulant activity demonstrated that the presence of a N-N group at C-3 position of 1,2,4-benzotriazine will be essential for the activity.     

α Emission in proton induced reactions

The continuous spectra of theα particles emitted in reactions induced by protons on⁹³Nb,¹⁰⁷Ag,¹¹⁸Sn,¹⁶⁵Ho,¹⁶⁹Tm have been measured at several energies ranging from 20 to 45 MeV. The spectra have been analysed in the framework of the Exciton model assuming that the emittedα's pre-existed in the target nucleus and evaluating their energy distribution on the basis of nucleon-α scattering dynamics in nuclear matter.
