Orientation effects in reactions of allenyl cations with styrene

Allenyl cations, generated $\text{in}$$\text{situ}$ from allenyl or alkynyl halides and Ag⁺, attack styrene at the side chain or at the aromatic nucleus. The allenyl/alkynyl product ratio is dependent on the structure of the precursor halide except for highly substituted systems.     

Synthesis, X-ray diffraction analysis and NMR studies of (Z)-2-methyl-3-triphenylstannyl-3-pentene-2-ol

The synthesis of (Z)-2-methyl-3-triphenylstannyl-3-pentene-2-ol and its characterization by an X-ray diffraction study and multinuclear NMR are reported. The tin atom exhibits a distorted tetrahedral SnC₄ geometry with the four Sn---C bond distances experimentally equivalent. The slight distortion from the ideal tetrahedral geometry is because of the presence of a weak intramolecular HO → Sn interaction of 3.012(3) Å which produces a loose four-membered ring. The title compound was characterized in solution by ¹H, ¹³C and ¹¹⁹Sn NMR, and the persistence of the weak intramolecular HO → Sn coordination in solution was revealed by ¹³C and ¹¹⁹Sn secondary isotope multiplet of partially labelled entities (SIMPLE-NMR) experiments.     

Synthesis of homoceramides, novel ceramide analogues, and their lack of effect on the growth of hippocampal neurons

The synthesis of a new series of D-erythro-homoceramide analogues is described. Several synthetic approaches were investigated. Homoceramides can be successfully synthesized from L-homoserine as chiral building block and a protected Weinreb-amide as a key intermediate. The synthesis of short-chain analogues with a heptyl side chain, as well as with a phenyl residue in the sphingoid part (instead of the naturally occurring tridecyl side chain), was effected. The homoceramides 15-17 and 24 were investigated for their potential to reverse the inhibitory effect of fumonisin B(1) on axonal growth. Unfortunately, none of the tested compounds showed any biological activity due to their lack of metabolism to glucosylhomoceramide.     

Perturbation analysis of the orthogonal procrustes problem

Given two arbitrary real matricesA andB of the same size, the orthogonal Procrustes problem is to find an orthogonal matrixM such that the Frobenius norm MA – B is minimized. This paper treats the common case when the orthogonal matrixM is required to have a positive determinant. The stability of the problem is studied and supremum results for the perturbation bounds are derived.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry as a tool for estimating odour concentrations of biofilter effluents at aerobic composting and rendering plants

The relationship between chemical concentrations (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis) and odour concentrations (olfactometry) was studied for biofilter emissions from four aerobic vegetable, fruit and garden waste (VFG) composting plants and one animal rendering plant. For the VFG composting plants, the study revealed a good linear relationship of the odour concentration with the total volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration (R²=0.97, n=16) as well as with the concentration of esters and ketones (R²=0.9, n=19). For biofilter emissions of the animal rendering plant, the total VOC concentration was a poor estimator for odour concentration. However, for this type of odour, concentrations of organic sulphur containing compounds correlated well with odour concentrations (R²=0.94, n=8). The results of the study also showed that the relationship between chemical and odour concentrations is specific for each type of odour and cannot be generalized.     

Matching subsequences in trees

Given two rooted, labeled trees P and T the tree path subsequence problem is to determine which paths in P are subsequences of which paths in T. Here a path begins at the root and ends at a leaf. In this paper we propose this problem as a useful query primitive for XML data, and provide new algorithms improving the previously best known time and space bounds.
