Finite Hurwitz braid group actions for Artin groups

We prove that (with two possible exceptions) the Hurwitz braid group action on the sequence of standard generators of an irreducible Artin group has a finite orbit if and only if the Artin group is of finite type (i.e., the corresponding Coxeter group is finite).     

Substoichiometric determination of traces of palladium by neutron-activation analysis

A highly selective, rapid one-step radiochemical separation procedure for palladium has been developed. It is based on the solvent extraction of palladium diethyldithiocarbamate from a 5M hydrochloric acid solution with a substoichiometric amount of copper diethyldithiocarbamate in chloroform. The separation has been applied to the determination of traces of palladium by neutron-activation analysis, in platinum, the rocks W-1 and PCC-1 and a biological material (kale). Amounts of palladium down to 10(-8) g have been determined.     

A novel preparation of macroscopic beads of porous silica

We report a new method for preparing porous silica beads using a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) sol–gel templating method. The method uses a silica sol based HIPE and does not rely on a polymeric support to produce the final structure. As a result beads may be formed readily in large numbers. The beads have an open porous structure commensurate with the formation of a HIPE precursor phase. We also describe how the rheology of the HIPE reflects the formation of an open porous structure and how the viscosity of the HIPE can affect the shape of the beads and how HIPE destabilization may be used to vary the pore size.     

Autoresonant excitation of antiproton plasmas

We demonstrate controllable excitation of the center-of-mass longitudinal motion of a thermal antiproton plasma using a swept-frequency autoresonant drive. When the plasma is cold, dense, and highly collective in nature, we observe that the entire system behaves as a single-particle nonlinear oscillator, as predicted by a recent theory. In contrast, only a fraction of the antiprotons in a warm plasma can be similarly excited. Antihydrogen was produced and trapped by using this technique to drive antiprotons into a positron plasma, thereby initiating atomic recombination.     

Central Schur rings over the projective special linear groups

In [1 Bannai, E. (1991). Subschemes of some association schemes. J. Algebra 14:167–188.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]], Bannai presents a fusion condition and uses this to consider central Schur rings (S-rings) over the simple groups PSL(2,q) where q is a prime power. In this paper, we concretely describe all such S-rings in terms of symmetric S-rings over cyclic groups. The final section discusses counting these.
