Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and pulse shape analysis (PSA) was used in measuring radon and gross alpha- and beta-activities in groundwater. We used conventional LSC counters for the measurement of radon in water, but low-background LSC spectrometers for the gross activity measurements. The lower limit of detection (LLD) for radon in water is 0.6 Bq/l for a 60 min count with a conventional counter, but 0.1 or 0.2 Bq/l, with the two types of low-background LSC spectrometers equipped with a pulse shape analyser (PSA). The gross alpha and beta activity measurements are made using a simple sample preparation method, PSA of a low background LSC and spectrum analysis. The LLD recorded for gross alpha and beta with the two spectrometers are 0.02 and 0.03 Bq/l and 0.2 and 0.4 Bq/l, respectively, for a 180 minutes count and a 38 ml sample volume. The method also enable the calculation of the U and226Ra contents in water and indicates the presence of some other long-lived radionuclides (210Pb,228Ra or40K). The LLD for U recorded with both spectrometers is 0.02 Bq–1 and for226Ra 0.01 Bq·1–1. The LLDs attained by this LSC method are two orders of magnitude lower than the maximum permissible concentrations set for U and226Ra.  相似文献

Two new oligothiophenes, the dinitro compound 3',4'-dibutyl-5,5' '-dinitro-2,2':5',2' '-terthiophene (1) and the quinodimethane 3',4'-dibutyl-5,5' '-bis(dicyanomethylene)-5,5' '-dihydro-2,2':5',2' '-terthiophene (2), have been synthesized and studied with electrochemistry, UV-vis-NIR-IR spectroscopy, ESR, and X-ray crystallography. These compounds, designed to be both electron and hole carriers, show redox properties that are unusual for oligothiophenes. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry demonstrated that each compound could be oxidized to a cation radical and reduced to an anion radical and dianion. The spectra of 2 and its three redox partners were analyzed in terms of a limiting structure in which the neutral 2 has orbitals corresponding to those of a substituted-terthiophene dication. Compound 1 crystallizes with the thiophene rings held in an unusual nonplanar, cisoid configuration in face-to-face pi-stacks, with a spacing between molecules of 3.65 A. The C-C bond lengths of the outer nitro-substituted rings have quinoid character. Compound 2 crystallizes with the thiophene rings in a planar, transoid configuration. The molecules are held in pi-stacks formed from pi-dimers with a spacing between molecules of 3.47 and 3.63 A. The C-C bond distances of the thiophene rings of 1 and 2 and other oligomers were analyzed by a principal component analysis. The analysis found that 93% of the structural variance resided in one principal component related to the quinoid structure of the oligothiophene moiety. The analysis reliably demonstrated a quinoid contribution to the structure of 1. This method should be applicable to understanding the structure of other conjugated molecules in which quinoid structures contribute.  相似文献

A new high‐temperature fibre tensile cell is described, developed for use at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to enable the investigation of the carbonization and graphitization processes during carbon fibre production. This cell is used to heat precursor fibre bundles to temperatures up to ~2300°C in a controlled inert atmosphere, while applying tensile stress to facilitate formation of highly oriented graphitic microstructure; evolution of the microstructure as a function of temperature and time during the carbonization and higher‐temperature graphitization processes can then be monitored by collecting real‐time wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns. As an example, the carbonization and graphitization behaviour of an oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibre was studied up to a temperature of ~1750°C. Real‐time WAXD revealed the gradual increase in microstructure alignment with the fibre axis with increasing temperature over the temperature range 600–1100°C. Above 1100°C, no further changes in orientation were observed. The overall magnitude of change increased with increasing applied tensile stress during carbonization. As a second example, the high‐temperature graphitizability of PAN‐ and pitch‐derived commercial carbon fibres was studied. Here, the magnitude of graphitic microstructure evolution of the pitch‐derived fibre far exceeded that of the PAN‐derived fibres at temperatures up to ~2300°C, indicating its facile graphitizability.  相似文献
