Confinement by polynomial potentials

It is shown that the Dirac equation with attractive monomial vector potential cannot confine a particle. General polynomial type vector potential cannot confine a particle, either. This condition is not changed by a scalar potential smaller than the vector one.     

Synthesis of 3-substituted 4H-1-benzothiopyran-4-ones

3-Substituted 2-phenyl-4H-1-benzothiopyran-4-ones (thioflavones) were prepared to test antimicrobial activity. It was found that 3-(phenyl)thiochromone derivatives (isothioflavones) were prepared by the Meerwein reaction of thiochromone with p-nitrobenzenediazonium ion. 3-(Formyl)thioflavone exhibits weak antimicrobial activity against Trichophytons and Candida.     

Isolation of novel lignans, heteroclitins F and G, from the stems of Kadsura heteroclita, and anti-lipid peroxidative actions of heteroclitins A-G and related compounds in the in vitro rat liver homogenate system.

From the stems of Kadsura heteroclita, two new lignans named heteroclitins F and G were isolated and their structures were determined by various spectroscopic means including an X-ray diffraction method. Dibenzocyclooctadiene type lignans and related compounds isolated from the stems of K. heteroclita, potently inhibited the lipid peroxidation in the rat liver homogenate stimulated by Fe(2+)-ascorbic acid, CCl4-reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine 5'-diphosphate-NADPH.     

Tandem radical reactions and ring-closing metathesis. Application in the synthesis of cyclooctenes

[reaction: see text] Fumarate- and acrylate-substituted oxazolidinones undergo tandem radical reaction to form dienes in moderate to good yields. The resulting dienes provide cyclooctenes in moderate to good yields after ring-closing metathesis (RCM). The role of the carbon backbone substituents and other variables in the efficiency of the eight-membered ring formation is discussed.     

Wild ginseng grows in Myanmar

Ginseng, the underground parts of plants of Panax species, has been used in oriental traditional medicine for centuries. Unfortunately, because of extensive exploitation over thousands of years, the natural source of these species has been almost exhausted. Recently, we have found a wild ginseng growing in Myanmar. Here, by a combination of chemical composition study and gene sequence analysis, we unambiguously demonstrate that the wild ginseng is actually P. zingiberensis, commonly known as ginger ginseng. This ginseng was an indigenous to the southwestern China. However, now it is seriously threatened to brink of extinction and is put on the highest level of protection in China. Therefore, an appropriate protection measure is highly recommended to preserve this valuable resource, since this Myanmar ginseng might turn out to be the last P. zingiberensis, which could ever be seen in the planet.     

NMR and quantum chemical study on the OH...pi and CH...O interactions between trehalose and unsaturated fatty acids: implication for the mechanism of antioxidant function of trehalose

Trehalose is a disaccharide that attracts much attention as a stress protectant. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the antioxidant function of trehalose. The spin-lattice relaxation times (T(1)) of (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra were measured to investigate the interaction between trehalose and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA). We selected several kinds of UFA that differ in the number of double bonds and in their configurations (cis or trans). Several other disaccharides (sucrose, maltose, neotrehalose, maltitol, and sorbitol) were also analyzed by NMR. The T(1) values for the (1)H and (13)C signals assigned to the olefin double bonds in UFA decrease with increasing concentration of trehalose and the changes reaches plateaus at integer ratios of trehalose to UFA. The characteristic T(1) change is observed only for the combination of trehalose and UFA with cis double bond(s). On the other hand, from the (13)C-T(1) measurements for trehalose, the T(1) values of the C-3 (C-3') and C-6' (C-6) are found to change remarkably by addition of UFA. (1)H[bond](1)H NOESY measurements provide direct evidence for complexation of trehalose with linoleic acid. These results indicate that one trehalose molecule stoichiometrically interacts with one cis-olefin double bond of UFA. Computer modeling study indicates that trehalose forms a stable complex with an olefin double bond through OH...pi and CH...O types of hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, a significant increase in the activation energy is found for hydrogen abstraction reaction from the methylene group located between the double bonds that are both interacting with the trehalose molecules. Therefore, trehalose has a significant depression effect on the oxidation of UFA through the weak interaction with the double bond(s). This is the first study to elucidate the antioxidant function of trehalose.     

Preparation and properties of molybdenum and tungsten dinitrogen complexes : `XVI. Electrochemical properties of tungsten and molybdenum diazoalkane complexes

Diazoalkane complexes of type [MF(NNCRR′)(dpe)₂][BF₄] (M = Mo or W; dpe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂), which are easily derived from bis(dinitrogen) complexes [M(N₂)₂(dpe)₂], undergo consecutive one- and two-electron oxidations and reductions under voltammetric conditions at a platinum electrode. The ESR spectra of the species generated by the controlled potential electrolysis show that primary oxidation occurred on the metal atom (M = Mo) and reduction on the two nitrogen atoms in the diazoalkane ligands (M = Mo or W).     

A general and convenient method for the synthesis of unesterified carbamoyl- and thiocarbamoyl-phosphonic acids

Unesterified carbamoyl- and thiocarbamoyl-phosphonic acids were prepared in high yields by the reaction of tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite with isocyanates and isothiocyanates followed by treatment of the 1:1 carbonyl adducts with aniline-containing methanol.
