Amino acids and peptides. XIII. Synthetic studies on N-terminal tripeptide amide analogs of fibrin alpha-chain

N-Terminal tripeptide analogs of fibrin alpha-chain were synthesized and their inhibitory effect on fibrinogen/thrombin clotting was examined. A new water-soluble active ester, 3-pyridinium ester, was used for the synthesis. Among the synthetic peptides, H-Gly-Pro-Arg-hexamethyleneimine exhibited the highest inhibitory effect on fibrinogen-thrombin clotting.     

Inflation model with lower multipoles of the CMB suppressed

The recent observation of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy by the WMAP confirmed that the lower multipoles are considerably suppressed. From the standpoint of the cosmic variance, it is nothing but a statistical accident. Alternatively, one can attribute the deficit of fluctuation on the large scale to the cosmic history, which might be explained in the context of the inflationary physics. In this Letter, we show that it is possible to explain the suppressed lower multipoles in the hybrid new inflation model.     

Comments on the evolution of strongly degenerate neutrinos in the early universe

We reconsider the evolution of strongly degenerate neutrinos in the early universe. Our chief concern is the validity of the entropy conservation after the neutrino annihilation process has frozen out (so that the establishment of chemical equilibrium is not trivial). We argue that the entropy indeed conserves because elastic scattering keeps the neutrino and antineutrino distribution functions in the equilibrium form and the sum of their chemical potential keeps zero even after the neutrino annihilation freeze-out. We also simulate the evolution of the degenerate neutrino spectrum to support the argument. We conclude that the change in the neutrino degeneracy parameter when the relativistic degrees of freedom in the universe decreases is calculated using the entropy conservation and the lepton number conservation without worrying about at what temperature the neutrino annihilation process freezes out.     

Flow-injection determination of 3-hdroxybutyrate in serum with an immobilized 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase reactor and chemiluminescence detection

A flow-injection system for the determination of 3-hydroxybutyrate in serum is described. 3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase is immobilized on poly(vinyl alcohol) beads and incorporated in a flow-injection system. 1-Methoxy-5-methylphenazinium methylsulphate reacts with enzymatically generated NADH to give H₂O₂, which is detected chemiluminometrically with the reaction of luminol and hexacynoferrate(III). Serum is diluted and filtered through an ultrafiltration membrane. The system responds linearly to injected samples (80 μl) in the concentration range 0.5–300 μM; the detection limit is 0.1 μM. The within-day relative standard deviation (n = 90) for 58 μM 3-hydroxybutyrate in serum is 0.8%. The maximum throughout is 20 samples per hour. The immobilized enzyme is stable for at least 1 month.     

Projector formalism of generalized Brownian motion theory applied to dissipative and noisy systems

The projector formalism of Zwanzig-Mori type is extended to obtain generalized Fokker-Planck and generalized nonlinear Langevin equations for coarse-grained variables when the underlying microscopic dynamics is dissipative and noisy (stochastic).     

Synthesis and chiroptical properties of optically active poly(ethynylcarbazole) derivatives: Substituent effect on the helix formation

Novel chiral acetylene monomers containing carbazole, 2‐ethynyl‐9‐[(S)‐2‐methylbutoxycarbonyl]carbazole ( 1 ), 3‐ethynyl‐9‐[(S)‐2‐methylbutoxycarbonyl]carbazole ( 2 ), 2‐ethynyl‐9‐[(S)‐2‐methylbutyl]carbazole ( 3 ), and 2‐ethynyl‐9‐[(S)‐4‐methylhexyl]carbazole ( 4 ) were synthesized and polymerized with [(nbd)RhCl]₂? Et₃N. The corresponding polyacetylenes with number‐average molecular weights ranging from 68,700 to 310,000 were obtained in good yields. Poly( 1 ) exhibited a large specific rotation and an intense Cotton effect in toluene, indicating that it formed a helix with predominantly one‐handed screw sense, while the other three polymers showed no evidence for taking a helical structure. Poly( 1 ) largely decreased the CD intensity upon heating from ?10 to 60 °C. Poly( 1 ) showed a Cotton effect in film state in a manner similar to solution state. No chiral amplification was observed in the copolymerization of 1 with achiral 2‐ethynyl‐9‐tert‐butoxycarbonylcarbazole ( 5 ). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structural and electrical properties of crystalline (1−x)Ta2O5−xTiO2 thin films fabricated by metalorganic decomposition

Polycrystalline (1−x)Ta₂O₅−xTiO₂ thin films were formed on Si by metalorganic decomposition (MOD) and annealed at various temperatures. As-deposited films were in the amorphous state and were completely transformed to crystalline after annealing above 600 °C. During crystallization, a thin interfacial SiO₂ layer was formed at the (1−x)Ta₂O₅−xTiO₂/Si interface. Thin films with 0.92Ta₂O₅–0.08TiO₂ composition exhibited superior insulating properties. The measured dielectric constant and dissipation factor at 1 MHz were 9 and 0.015, respectively, for films annealed at 900 °C. The interface trap density was 2.5×10¹¹ cm⁻² eV⁻¹, and flatband voltage was −0.38 V. A charge storage density of 22.8 fC/μm² was obtained at an applied electric field of 3 MV/cm. The leakage current density was lower than 4×10⁻⁹ A/cm² up to an applied electric field of 6 MV/cm.     

The upper and lower second order directional derivatives of a sup-type function

The purpose of this paper is to give a formula for expressing the second order directional derivatives of the sup-type functionS(x) = sup{f(x, t); t T} in terms of the first and second derivatives off(x, t), whereT is a compact set in a metric space and we assume thatf, f/x and ² f/x ² are continuous on ⁿ × T. We will give a geometrical meaning of the formula. We will moreover give a sufficient condition forS(x) to be directionally twice differentiable.     

The correlation between molecular polarizability of PAHs and their retention data on various stationary phases in reversed-phase HPLC

Summary The equation for the potential energy of interactions established for gas-liquid chromatography has been confirmed in reversed phase liquid chromatography. Equations derived for molecular polarizabilities of PAHs and their retention data have very high correlation coefficients. The results indicate that the inductive effect between solute and stationary phase is the main one and the dispersive effect is very small compared with the inductive effect but its contribution increases with the carbon chain length of the stationary phase.
