The Role of Radical Bridges in Polynuclear Single-Molecule Magnets

Employing radical bridges between anisotropic metal ions has been a viable route to achieve high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs). While the bridges have been mainly considered for their ability to promote exchange interactions, the crystal-field effect arising from them has not been taken into account explicitly. This lack of consideration may distort the understanding and limit the development of the entire family. To shed light on this aspect, herein we report a theoretical investigation of a series of N -radical-bridged diterbium complexes. It is found that while promoting strong exchange coupling between the terbium ions, the N -radical induces a crystal field that interferes destructively with that of the outer ligands, and thus reduces the overall SMM behavior. Based on the theoretical results, we conclude that the SMM behavior in this series could be further maximized if the crystal field of the outer ligands is designed to be collinear with that of the radical bridge. This conclusion can be generalized to all exchange-coupled SMMs.     

Synthesis of substituted 5-aminomethyl tetrahydro-isoquinolines and dihydro-isoindoles

The synthesis of ten substituted aminomethylene tetrahydro-isoquinolines is described, proceeding in eight steps from 5-hydroxyisoquinoline via reductive amination of N-Boc tetrahydro-isoquinoline 5-carboxaldehyde. Likewise, reductive amination was used to prepare four substituted dihydro-isoindoles from the corresponding aldehyde. The dihydro-isoindole ring system was conveniently accessed via a 2+2+2 cycloaddition reaction.     

New labdane-type diterpenoids from Leonurus heterophyllus SW

Five new natural labdane-type diterpenoids (5-9), designated leoheteronins A-E, together with four known diterpenoids (1-4), two phytosterols as a mixture of beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, and the flavone genkwanin (10) were isolated from the aerial parts of Leonurus heterophyllus SW. (Lamiaceae) collected in northern Vietnam. Compound 1 was isolated for the first time from a Leonurus species, and 10 is considered to be a chemotaxonomic marker of the Leonurus genus. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic analyses.     

Heterobimetallic Eu(iii)/Pt(ii) single-chain nanoparticles: a path to enlighten catalytic reactions

We introduce the formation and characterization of heterometallic single-chain nanoparticles entailing both catalytic and luminescent properties. A terpolymer containing two divergent ligand moieties, phosphines and phosphine oxides, is synthesized and intramolecularly folded into nanoparticles via a selective metal complexation of Pt(ii) and Eu(iii). The formation of heterometallic Eu(iii)/Pt(ii) nanoparticles is evidenced by size exclusion chromatography, multinuclear NMR (¹H, ³¹P{¹H}, ¹⁹F, ¹⁹⁵Pt) as well as diffusion-ordered NMR and IR spectroscopy. Critically, we demonstrate the activity of the SCNPs as a homogeneous and luminescent catalytic system in the amination reaction of allyl alcohol.

A bifunctional terpolymer containing two orthogonal ligand moieties was synthesized, giving way to the facile formation of heterometallic Eu(iii)/Pt(ii) single-chain nanoparticles, which display both catalytic and luminescent properties.     

Isolation and Crystal Structure of Novel by-products Observed During the Formation of bis(thiosemicarbazones)

During the condensation of 4-methyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (3) with 2,3-butanedione an unexpected by-product, 8a-methyl-6,8a-dihydro-8-methyl-2-[N-methyl-N-phenylamino]-5H-1,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-d][1,2,4]triazine-5-thione, (5) was obtained in addition to the desired bis(thiosemicarbazone) (4). An X-ray crystal structure was obtained and is presented together with a proposed mechanism for its formation. A brief investigation of the coordination chemistry of bicycle (5) was carried out. The formation of cyclic compounds during the synthesis of analogues with extended backbones is also described.     

Hardy Spaces on the Plane and Double Fourier Transforms

We provide a direct computational proof of the known inclusion where is the product Hardy space defined for example by R. Fefferman and is the classical Hardy space used, for example, by E.M. Stein. We introduce a third space of Hardy type and analyze the interrelations among these spaces. We give simple sufficient conditions for a given function of two variables to be the double Fourier transform of a function in and respectively. In particular, we obtain a broad class of multipliers on and respectively. We also present analogous sufficient conditions in the case of double trigonometric series and, as a by-product, obtain new multipliers on and respectively.
