Background
The common event in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases is the conversion of host-encoded protease sensitive cellular prion protein (PrPC) into strain dependent isoforms of scrapie associated protease resistant isoform (PrPSc) of prion protein (PrP). These processes are determined by similarities as well as strain dependent variations in the PrP structure. Selective self-interaction between PrP molecules is the most probable basis for initiation of these processes, potentially influenced by chaperone molecules, however the mechanisms behind these processes are far from understood. We previously determined that polymorphisms do not affect initial PrPC to PrPSc binding but rather modulate a subsequent step in the conversion process. Determining possible sites of self-interaction could elucidate which amino acid(s) or amino acid sequences contribute to binding and further conversion into other isoforms. To this end, ovine – and bovine PrP peptide-arrays consisting of 15-mer overlapping peptides were probed with recombinant sheep PrPC fused to maltose binding protein (MBP-PrP). 相似文献2.

Recently, a new carrier‐induced defect has been reported in multi‐crystalline silicon (mc‐Si), and has been shown to be particularly detrimental to the performance of passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC) cells. Under normal conditions, this defect can take years to fully form. This Letter reports on the accelerated formation and subsequent passivation of this carrier‐induced defect through the use of high illumination intensity and elevated temperatures resulting in passivation within minutes. The process was tested on industrial mc‐Si PERC solar cells, where degradation after a 100 hour stability test was suppressed to only 0.1% absolute compared to 2.1% for non‐treated cells. This Letter reports on the acceleration of the rate of formation of the boron–oxygen defect in p‐type Czochralski silicon with illumination intensities in excess of 2.1 × 1017 photons/cm2/s. It is observed that increased light intensities greatly enhance the rate of defect formation, without increasing the saturation concentration of the defect. These results suggest a dependence of the defect formation rate upon the total majority carrier concentration. Finally, a method using temperatures up to 475 K and an illumination intensity of 1.68 × 1019 photons/cm2/s is shown to result in near‐complete defect formation within seconds. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an evolutionary computation technique inspired by the principle of biological evolution via natural
selection. It employs the fundamental components of evolution, such as selection, mating, and mutation, which continue from
generation to generation, creating better solutions as time progresses. Although it is mostly used as an optimization tool,
GA enjoys a wide spectrum of applications in diverse fields such as engineering, medicine, and ecology, among others. In this
study, we propose three different population size reduction methods for a typical GA optimization, aiming to increase efficiency.

Taking into account directivity of real sound sources makes it possible to try solving an interesting and biologically relevant problem: estimating the orientation in three-dimensional space of a directional sound source. The source, of known directivity, produces a broadband signal (in the ultrasonic range, in this application) that is recorded by microphones whose position with respect to source is known. An analytical method to process the recorded signals and estimate source orientation is developed in this paper. Experiments testing method performance in estimating source orientation were performed both in a laboratory environment with a Polaroid transducer as source and in a flight room with a Myotis daubentonii bat. In the first case, results showed the estimation method to be accurate and pointed out its limitations. The latter case is significant as an example biological application of the method for extracting behavioral features from bats; results are compared with alternative calculations based on microphone root-mean-square (rms)-pressure values. 相似文献

This paper considers the existence and uniqueness of solutions of an age-structured population model in a spatially heterogeneous bounded environment. The model describes individual organism movement of diffusion and advection in the older life stage but assumes stationarity of individuals in the embryonic stage. The subcomponent self‐assembly of a bent dialdehyde ligand and different cationic and anionic templates led to the formation of two new metallosupramolecular architectures: a FeII4L6 molecular rectangle was isolated following reaction of the ligand with iron(II) tetrafluoroborate, and a M5L6 trigonal bipyramidal structure was constructed from either zinc(II) tetrafluoroborate or cadmium(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate. The spatially constrained arrangement of the three equatorial metal ions in the M5L6 structures was found to induce small‐molecule transformations. Atmospheric carbon dioxide was fixed as carbonate and bound to the equatorial metal centers in both the Zn5L6 and Cd5L6 assemblies, and sulfur dioxide was hydrated and bound as the sulfite dianion in the Zn5L6 structure. Subsequent in situ oxidation of the sulfite dianion resulted in a sulfate dianion bound within the supramolecular pocket. 相似文献

Metal/superconductor/semiconductor (Ag/Hg-1212/CdSe) hetero-nanostructures have been fabricated using pulse-electrodeposition
technique and are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) and scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) studies. The junction capacitance of Ag/Hg-1212, Hg-1212/CdSe and Ag/Hg-1212/CdSe heterojunctions is measured in dark
and under laser irradiation at room temperature. The nature of the junction formed and built-in-junction potentials were determined.
The increase in carrier concentration across the junction due to photo-irradiation has been observed. 相似文献
