A reverse isoperimetric inequality for J-holomorphic curves

We prove that the length of the boundary of a J-holomorphic curve with Lagrangian boundary conditions is dominated by a constant times its area. The constant depends on the symplectic form, the almost complex structure, the Lagrangian boundary conditions and the genus. A similar result holds for the length of the real part of a real J-holomorphic curve. The infimum over J of the constant properly normalized gives an invariant of Lagrangian submanifolds. We calculate this invariant to be \({2\pi}\) for the Lagrangian submanifold \({\mathbb{R} P^n \subset \mathbb{C} P^n.}\) We apply our result to prove compactness of moduli of J-holomorphic maps to non-compact target spaces that are asymptotically exact. In a different direction, our result implies the adic convergence of the superpotential.     

New multifunctional nanoparticles with mesoporous cores and silver shells

The feasibility of preparing continuous silver shells of different thicknesses on mesoporous silica particles is demonstrated for the first time. The resulting composite nanoparticles with a tuned localized surface plasmon resonance can simultaneously be used as containers for a number of compounds, e.g., drugs for combined therapy of tumors.

Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis with the support of X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy were used as screening techniques for the compatibility testing of imatinib mesylate, with following excipients: magnesium stearate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, microcrystalline cellulose. In order to maximize the probability of interactions 1:1 (by mass) drug: excipient binary mixtures were analysed and compared to individual components. Additionally an influence of storage at temperatures of 25 and 40°C on physico-chemical stability on drug – excipient binary mixtures was investigated. The largest visible changes were observed in the DSC curves of imatinib mesylate – magnesium stearate mixtures.

A functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide colloid as a receptor directed MR contrast agent.

We have synthesized a surface functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide colloid whose clearance from the vascular compartment was inhibited by asialofetuin but not fetuin. Unlike other particulate or colloidal magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents, the agent of the current communication is not withdrawn from the vascular compartment by cells of the macrophage-monocyte phagocytic system, as indicated by its selective increase in hepatic relaxation rates. Because of this we refer to this colloid as a hepatic selective (HS) MR contrast agent. At 20 mumol Fe/kg the HS MR agent darkened MR images of liver. The HS MR agent exhibited no acute toxicity when injected into rats at 1800 mumol Fe/kg. Based on these observations, surface functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide colloids may be the basis of MR contrast agents internalized by receptor mediated endocytosis generally, and by the asialoglycoprotein receptor in particular.
