Role of the microstructure on the transport properties of Y-doped zirconia and Gd-doped ceria

Transmission electron microscopy characterizations and XPS analyses have allowed us to show the influence of the microstructure and nanochemistry on the transport properties of Y₂O₃-(9 mol%)-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Gd₂O₃ (10 mol%)-doped ceria (GDC). The grain boundary electrical conductivity (σ_gb) and oxygen diffusion coefficient (D_o) of conventional YSZ ceramics increase with the grain size, while an opposite behavior was found for GDC samples. This difference was attributed to glassy precipitates present at YSZ grain boundaries. Furthermore, it was shown that kinetic demixing processes take place during cooling, at the end of sintering. This causes important changes in the cationic species distribution at interfaces and plays an important role on the transport properties of these two materials. INVESTIGATION OF THE ANTIVIRAL ACTION OF THE PHOTOACTIVE COMPOUND PHENYLHEPTATRIYNE

Abstract— Murine cytomegalovirus, a herpes virus, was used as a model virus to investigate the mechanism of the anti-viral action of phenylheptatriyne in long wave ultraviolet light. The genome and proteins of the inactivated virus penetrated the nuclei of susceptible cells normally. Furthermore, the viral genome did not contain extra single strand breaks or cross-links. However, cells infected with the treated virus did not synthesize late viral proteins, as determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. nor did they synthesize late viral RNA and viral DNA according to nucleic acid hybridization tests. Thus the compound may interfere with an early viral function so that the replication cycle cannot proceed.     

Selective modification of the 2-position of pyridoxol

Pyridoxol, protected by acetylation of the hydroxyl groups, has been converted to its N-oxide which upon reaction with perfluoroacetie anhydride yields a 2-nor-2-hydroxymethylpyridoxol derivative as an intermediate. This compound undergoes acyl migration from the 3-position. Protection of the pyridoxol hydroxyls by benzylalion followed by the same treatment yields the unrearranged α²-hydroxy derivative. This compound has been converted to a series of α²-substituted pyridoxols (X = -Cl, -Br, -OCOCH₃, -OCH₃, -OC₂H₅).     

Organometallic compounds having metal-metal bonds : XXIII. Hydrido(triphenylgermanium)tetracarbonyliron and its conjugate base

Reaction of Ph₃GeLi with [Et₄N][HFe₃(CO)₁₁] affords the new carbonylferrate salt [Et₄N][Ph₃GeFe(CO)₄] and the same reaction provides an alternative route to the known silicon and tin analogs. Protonation of [Et₄N][Ph₃GeFe(CO)₄] with HCl in ether-THF forms the air-sensitive, thermally rather unstable cis-Ph₃GeFeH(CO)₄. The latter protonates chloride ions in dichloromethane.     

Boron-containing nucleosides. 1. Synthesis of the novel heterocycle 2-benzyl-1,4-dihydro-1-hydroxythieno[3,2-c][1,5,2]diazaborin-3(2H)-one: A thieno-fused 4-borauracil

The synthesis of the novel boron-containing nucleobase 2-benzyl-1,4-dihydro-1-hydroxythieno[3,2-c]-[1,5,2]diazaborin-3(2H)-one ( 8 ), a thieno-fused 4-borauracil, is described. Compound 8 was prepared in three steps starting from 2-thiophenecarbonyl chloride ( 4 ). A multinuclear and multisolvent nmr study of 8 indicates that the boron atom maintains a trigonal geometry in the solvents used.
