Stereoselective synthesis of internal allylic fluorides

Ru-based catalysts can be used in E-selective cross metathesis (CM) reactions to synthesise various functionalised internal allylic monofluorides.     

Superacid-Mediated Late-Stage Aromatic Polydeuteration of Pharmaceuticals

The field of medicinal chemistry is currently witnessing a deuterium rush owing to the remarkable properties of this element as bioisoster of hydrogen atom. Aromatic hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) is one of the most studied strategies nowadays as it promises to access deuterium-modified drugs directly from their non-labeled parents. While most of the recent studies focus on metal-catalyzed C−H activation strategy, the use of superacidic conditions has been largely overlooked. This study shows that the use of TfOD as reaction medium allows the late-stage polydeuteration of a broad library of pharmaceuticals bearing a wide array of functional groups, complementing existing procedures.     

Chemical Composition of Volatile Compounds in Apis mellifera Propolis from the Northeast Region of Pará State,Brazil

Propolis is a balsamic product obtained from vegetable resins by exotic Africanized bees Apis mellifera L., transported and processed by them, originating from the activity that explores and maintains these individuals. Because of its vegetable and natural origins, propolis is a complex mixture of different compound classes; among them are the volatile compounds present in the aroma. In this sense, in the present study we evaluated the volatile fraction of propolis present in the aroma obtained by distillation and simultaneous extraction, and its chemical composition was determined using coupled gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and flame ionization detection. The majority of compounds were sesquiterpene and hydrocarbons, comprising 8.2–22.19% α-copaene and 6.2–21.7% β-caryophyllene, with additional compounds identified in greater concentrations. Multivariate analysis showed that samples collected from one region may have different chemical compositions, which may be related to the location of the resin’s production. This may be related to other bee products.     

Natural product based inhibitors of the thioredoxin-thioredoxin reductase system

Spiroketal naphthodecalins are readily assembled by Barton's base mediated Ullmann binaphthyl ether coupling, Dakin reactions and hypervalent iodine spirocyclization. The core structures can be further diversified by enone addition and Stille coupling reactions. Nanomolar inhibitors for the Trx/TrxR redox control system were prepared by this approach and compared to series of natural product isolates. Cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cell assays ranged from an IC50 of 1.6 to >100 microM.     

Mechanistic study of the addition reaction of TeCl4 to alkynes: Participation of TeCl3 centered-radical

The mechanism of the addition reaction of TeCl₄ to alkynes was indirectly established by the detection of TeCl₃ centered radicals using EPR spin trapping, ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS characterization.     

Crystal structure and theoretical calculations of Julocrotine,a natural product with antileishmanial activity

Julocrotine, N‐(2,6‐dioxo‐1‐phenethyl‐piperidin‐3‐yl)‐2‐methyl‐butyramide, is a potent antiproliferative agent against the promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (L.). In this work, the crystal structure of Julocrotine was solved by X‐ray diffraction, and its geometrical parameters were compared with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP and HF level of theory. IR and NMR spectra also have been obtained and compared with theoretical calculations. IR absorptions calculated with the B3LYP level of theory employed together with the 6‐311G+(d,p) basis set, are close to those observed experimentally. Theoretical NMR calculations show little deviation from experimental results. The results show that the theory is in accordance with the experimental data. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Generalized elementary functions

We use the theory of generalized linear differential equations to introduce new definitions of the exponential, hyperbolic and trigonometric functions. We derive some basic properties of these generalized functions, and show that the time scale elementary functions with Lebesgue integrable arguments represent a special case of our definitions.     

Electrospun poly(ethylene oxide)/chitosan nanofibers with cellulose nanocrystals as support for cell culture of 3T3 fibroblasts

Chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) (5:1) nanofibers with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were produced using an electrospinning technique. The addition of CNCs to the chitosan/PEO solutions allowed the production of uniform fibers (without beads) with a high proportion of chitosan. The fiber diameters were influenced by the concentration of CNCs in the chitosan/PEO solutions. The solutions containing 10% (w/w) of CNCs produced thinner fibers compared to solutions containing 5% (w/w) of CNCs. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the nanofibers were thermally stable, despite the CNCs having an effect on the PEO decomposition. Results from the cell assay in cultures of 3T3 fibroblasts indicated that the chitosan/PEO nanofibers (with 10% CNCs) promoted cell attachment with changes in the cytoskeletal organization. The results obtained in this work highlight the favorable effect of CNCs in electrospinning of chitosan/PEO. As expected, the influence of nanofibers on 3T3 fibroblasts F-actin and β-tubulin network revealed alterations in cytoskeleton, leading to changes in cell morphology and spreading.     

On the elucidation of the mechanism of Vinca alkaloid fluorination in superacidic medium

Detailed investigations on one of the key steps of the superacidic fluorination of Vinca alkaloids that is the origin of C20' activation are reported. While two different pathways can be envisioned for the emergence of the transient secondary carbocationic intermediate, isotopic labeling experiments unambiguously revealed the involvement of a 1,2-hydride shift mechanism.
