We show that the dipole-dipole interatomic forces induced by an off-resonant running laser beam can lead to a self-bound pencil-shaped Bose condensate, even if the laser beam is a plane wave. For an appropriate laser intensity the ground state has a quasi-one-dimensional density modulation-a Bose-Einstein "supersolid."  相似文献

We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, dipolar relaxation in a gas of magnetically trapped chromium atoms. We find that the large magnetic moment of 6B results in an event rate coefficient for dipolar relaxation processes of up to 3.2×10-11 cm3s-1 in a magnetic field of 44 G. We present a theoretical model based on pure dipolar coupling, which predicts dipolar relaxation rates that agree with our experimental observations. This very general approach can be applied to a large variety of dipolar gases. PACS 34.50.-s; 34.50.PI; 03.65.NK; 32.80.PJ  相似文献

We have investigated the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate of strongly magnetic chromium atoms. The long-range and anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction leads to an anisotropic deformation of the expanding chromium condensate which depends on the orientation of the atomic dipole moments. Our measurements are consistent with the theory of dipolar quantum gases and show that a chromium condensate is an excellent model system to study dipolar interactions in such gases.  相似文献

We have measured the relative strength epsilon dd of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction compared with the contact interaction in a dipolar chromium Bose-Einstein condensate. We analyze the asymptotic velocities of expansion of the condensate with different orientations of the atomic magnetic moments. By comparing the experimental results with numerical solutions of the hydrodynamic equations for dipolar condensates, we obtain epsilon dd = 0.159+/-0.034. We use this result to determine the s-wave scattering length a = (5.08+/-1.06 x 10(-9)) m = (96+/-20) a0 of 52Cr. This is fully consistent with our previous measurements on the basis of Feshbach resonances and therefore confirms the validity of the theoretical approach used to describe the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.  相似文献

A method to investigate acoustic Hawking radiation is proposed, where entanglement entropy and mutual information are measured from the fluctuations of the number of particles. The rate of entropy radiated per one-dimensional (1D) channel is given by S=κ/12, where κ is the sound acceleration on the sonic horizon. This entropy production is accompanied by a corresponding formation of mutual information to ensure the overall conservation of information. The predictions are confirmed using an ab initio analytical approach in transonic flows of 1D degenerate ideal Fermi fluids.  相似文献

We have studied the tunability of the interaction between permanent dipoles in Bose-Einstein condensates. Based on time-dependent control of the anisotropy of the dipolar interaction, we show that even the very weak magnetic dipole coupling in alkali gases can be used to excite collective modes. Furthermore, we discuss how the effective dipolar coupling in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be tuned from positive to negative values and even switched off completely by fast rotation of the orientation of the dipoles.  相似文献

We show that particular configurations of intense off-resonant laser beams can give rise to an attractive 1/r interatomic potential between atoms located well within the laser wavelength. Such a "gravitational-like" interaction is shown to give stable Bose-Einstein condensates that are self-bound (without an additional trap) with unique scaling properties and measurably distinct signatures.  相似文献

A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate irradiated by a far off-resonance laser has long-range interatomic correlations caused by laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions. These correlations, which are tunable via the laser intensity and frequency, can produce a "roton" minimum in the excitation spectrum--behavior reminiscent of the strongly correlated superfluid liquid He II.  相似文献
