Oral malodor,assessed by closed-loop,gas chromatography,and ion-trap technology

A method is described for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in saliva and tongue coating samples. The techniue is based on an off-line preconcentration step by means of a closed-loop trapping system followed by gas chromatography-ion trap detection. With the closed-loop technique, the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) are released from the matrix and trapped on an adsorbent without interference of water. The VOCs are released from the adsorbent into the gas chromatograph by thermdesorption. After separation, identification of the compounds is performed by ion trap technology. By this technique 82 compounds could be demonstrated in saliva and tongue coating samples. The technique is also used to demonstrate the formation of volatile bacterial fermentation compounds when a protein substrate is added to tongue coating samples. It is considered a very promising tool in further research on oral malodor.     

Improvement of cyclosporin A determination in whole blood by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

A chromatographic method was developed for the determination of cyclosporin A in human whole blood using reversed-phase HPLC at room temperature. Most previous reports carried out this liquid chromatographic separation at temperatures above 70 degrees C. The present procedure greatly improves the detection limit by controlling peak broadening effects, as well as the lifetime of the column at room temperature. Under optimal conditions and using ketoconazole as an internal standard, the calibration graph was linear in the range of 16-1000 microg/L with a relative standard deviation of 3.72% at 150 microg/L and 2.45% at 300 microg/L (n = 11) of cyclosporin A. The detection limit was of 5.0 microg/L cyclosporin A. By this procedure, cyclosporin A pharmacokinetic parameters in healthy Chinese subjects were studied. The developed method could be applied to the quantification of cyclosporin A in human blood samples and allows the study of its pharmacokinetics in routine laboratories.     

Duality for Hermitean Systems in {\mathbb R^{2n}}

In this paper, using the ring structure of the space of circulant (2 × 2)-matrix, we characterize the dual of the (Fréchet) space of germs of left Hermitean monogenic matrix functions in a compact set _boxclose_boxclose_boxclose_boxclose_boxclose_boxclose_boxclose_boxclose R^2n{{\bf E}\subset\mathbb R^{2n}}. As an application we describe the dual space of the so-called h-monogenic functions satisfying simultaneously two Dirac type equations.

The impact of metrological traceability on the validity of creatinine measurement as an index of renal function

When the calibration of a routine measurement procedure is traced back to metrological higher order, a significant discrepancy can occur between the analytical conditions of the routine measurement and the analytical conditions that were used in the clinical studies upon which the decision-making criteria are based. This can lead to serious interpretation errors with possible dramatic consequences for patients. The calibration of the creatinine Jaffé method is an excellent example of the importance of medical traceability. The compensated Jaffé method correlated accurately with the reference method and the compensated Jaffé creatinine clearance (CrCl), Cockroft and Gault and MDRD with the ⁵¹Cr EDTA clearance. The Schwartz estimate based upon the compensated Jaffé and enzymatic method overestimated, while uncompensated Jaffé slightly underestimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The situation in children is complex since serum creatinine concentrations are much lower in infants, rendering tubular secretion relatively more important. Low-molecular weight proteins have been suggested to replace serum creatinine as a marker for GFR. -trace protein, cystatin C, and ₂-microglobulin showed good correlation with GFR. However, care should be taken in patients presenting with some malignant tumors, since significant increases of cystatin C in patients with metastatic melanoma or colorectal cancer has been reported.Presented at the 9th Conference on Quality in the Spotlight, 18-19 March 2004, Antwerp, Belgium     

On the solutions of the Moisil–Théodoresco system

A structure theorem is proved for the solutions to the Moisil–Théodoresco system in open subsets of ?³. Furthermore, it is shown that the Cauchy transform maps L₂(?², ?_{0, 2}⁺) isomorphically onto H²(?₊³, ?_{0, 3}⁺), thus proving an elegant generalization to ?² of the classical notion of an analytic signal on the real line. Carbon nanotubes-assisted polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for enhanced separation of human serum proteins and application in liverish diagnosis

The application of pore-gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PG-PAGE) incorporated with carbon nanotube modified by Triton X-100 and carboxylation so as to improve the separation of human serum proteins is reported. The novel PG-PAGE was made by adding water-soluble single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) when preparing the polyacrylamide gel. Significant improvements in separation of complement C3 protein and haptoglobin (Hp) in human serum were achieved. It was estimated that the interactions between the hydrophilic groups on the proteins and the surface of the CNTs result in different adsorption kinetics of complement C3 and Hp subtype on the nanoparticles incorporated in the gel, thus enhancing the separation of the two proteins in serum. This new CNT matrix-assisted PG-PAGE method for enhanced separation of complement C3 and Hp in human serum was successfully applied to distinguish the samples from liverish patients and healthy people.     

On Polynomial Solutions of Generalized Moisil-Théodoresco Systems and Hodge-de Rham Systems

The aim of the paper is to study relations between polynomial solutions of generalized Moisil-Théodoresco (GMT) systems and polynomial solutions of Hodge-de Rham systems and, using these relations, to describe polynomial solutions of GMT systems. We decompose the space of homogeneous solutions of GMT system of a given homogeneity into irreducible pieces under the action of the group O(m) and we characterize individual pieces by their highest weights and we compute their dimensions.
