Exchange of mercury between mercuric ions and methylmercuric nitrate

The rate constant for the exchange between Hg²⁺ and CH₃Hg⁺ ions in a Cl-free 1NH₂SO₄ solution at 25°C was measured with²⁰³Hg as a radiotracer and separation of the two compounds by liquid extraction of the organic species into benzene from a NaCl- or NaI-solution.     

Ultrahigh field MAS NMR dipolar correlation spectroscopy of the histidine residues in light-harvesting complex II from photosynthetic bacteria reveals partial internal charge transfer in the B850/His complex.

Low-temperature 15N and 13C CP/MAS (cross-polarization/magic angle spinning) NMR has been used to analyze BChl-histidine interactions and the electronic structure of histidine residues in the light-harvesting complex II (LH2) of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila. The histidines were selectively labeled at both or one of the two nitrogen sites of the imidazole ring. The resonances of histidine nitrogens that are interacting with B850 BChl a have been assigned. Specific 15N labeling confirmed that it is the tau-nitrogen of histidines which is ligated to Mg2+ of B850 BChl molecules (beta-His30, alpha-His31). The pi-nitrogens of these Mg2+-bound histidines were found to be protonated and may be involved in hydrogen bond interactions. Comparison of the 2-D MAS NMR homonuclear (13C-13C) dipolar correlation spectrum of [13C6,15N3]-histidines in the LH2 complex with model systems in the solid state reveals two different classes of electronic structures from the histidines in the LH2. In terms of the 13C isotropic shifts, one corresponds to the neutral form of histidine and the other resembles a positively charged histidine species. 15N-13C double-CP/MAS NMR data provide evidence that the electronic structure of the histidines in the neutral BChl a/His complexes resembles the positive charge character form. While the Mg...15N isotropic shift confirms a partial positive charge transfer, its anisotropy is essentially of the lone pair type. This provides evidence that the hybridization structure corresponding to the neutral form of the imidazole is capable of "buffering" a significant amount of positive charge.     

Considerations on the planned use of a scientific balance on Mars

The balance is the most widely used complex measuring instrument in science and techniques. To install a balance on Mars is a challenge for numerous aspects of in situ measurements in the next decade. By means of a balance useful parameters could be determined and a variety of investigations could be carried out there. Possible applications of a balance on Mars are reviewed. Choice of type and demands on the balance with regard to the conditions on Mars are discussed. The first step is to test a load cell with strain gauge deflection sensor.

Cyclization reactions with 2-(β-styryl)benzylamines 5-Phenyl-1H-2-benzazepines Cyclization of the urea derivative 3 with POCl₃ to give 2-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-4-phenylquinoline ( 4 ) was carried out in analogy to the quinoline synthesis of Foulds & Robinson. This reaction was used for the preparation of 2-benzazepines. The trisubstituted ureas 6 and 8 , derived from the 2-(β-styryl)-benzylamines 5 , were cyclized with POCl₃ to yield the 3-amino-5-phenyl-1H-2-benzazepines 7 and 9 , respectively. Similarly, cyclization of the corresponding acetyl-derivatives 10 gave the 3-methyl-5-phenyl-1H-2-benzazepines 12 . On the other hand, the disubstituted urea 15 , cyclized under the same conditions to the 1-methyl-1-phenylisoindoline derivative 16 , and 2-(β-styryl)benzylamine ( 5a ) on treatment with phosgene gave the isoindoline 17 in an analogous manner.

The synthesis of (RS)-(E)-nuciferal has been realized by two ways, starting from 2-(p-tolyl)-propanal, by Wittig's reactions.     

THE ELECTRON SPIN POLARIZATION OF THE DONOR-TRIPLET STATE IN NATIVE and MODIFIED PHOTOSYNTHETIC REACTION CENTERS FROM

The electron spin polarization (ESP) pattern of the donor-triplet state (P^R) of reaction centers (RC's) of the purple bacterium Rhodobacter (formerly Rhodopseudomonas) sphaeroides R-26 was investigated. δm =±1 triplet EPR spectra were recorded of unmodified RC's as well as of RC's from which Fe²⁺ or ubiquinone was removed, or ubiquinone was substituted by menaquinone.
The relative amplitude of the Y peaks in the triplet EPR powder spectrum of P^R decreases when the temperature is increased from 8 K to 100 K in RC's with an intact quinone-iron complex. This decrease is more pronounced when the primary ubiquinone is substituted by menaquinone. These observations provide further support for the hypothesis that the observed lineshape of the P^R triplet state EPR spectrum reflects the presence of a third electron spin, magnetically coupled to I^- in the P⁺I^- radical pair, as suggested by Van Wijk et al. (1986) (Photobiochem. Photobiophys . 11, 95–100). Our observations suggest that this phenomenon may be general in purple bacteria.     

Synthesis and biological evaluation of 3-aryltyramines as fragments binding to BACE-1 and BACE-2

3-Aryltyramines were prepared in one single step from tyramine and various arenediazonium salts by radical arylation. Binding as well as enzyme inhibition data of the 14 compounds do not prove true interaction with BACE-1. In contrast, with BACE-2 inhibition and binding could be confirmed indicating that 3-aryltyramines are potential starting points for a drug discovery effort.
