Yeast cell microfiltration: Flux enhancement in baffled and pulsatile flow systems

The filtration performance of yeast cell harvesting was greatly improved by using an oscillatory flow mixing technique in both tubular and flat sheet membrane systems; flux increases of several fold were achieved. The effects of various operating parameters such as frequency, amplitude and ratio of net forward flow rate to oscillatory flow rate were investigated. A simple alternative to the dual head pump, which involved the use of solenoid valves for producing flow reversal, was developed. The flux was significantly increased using this new operating mode. As the only increase of power consumption was from inertia loss due to change of flow direction the additional power consumption is minimal.     

Effects of partial/asymmetrical filling of micelles and chiral selectors on capillary electrophoresis enantiomeric separation: generation of a gradient

The effect of several experimental parameters on enantiomeric separations in micellar capillary electrophoresis (MCE) was studied. A model separation system was tested. It was composed of an acidic phosphate buffer with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) as the chiral selector. A substituted angelicin was used as a chiral analyte. Changes in the concentration of SDS micelles/SDS monomers in the presence of HP-beta-CD and their impact on the enantioselective separation were investigated. Variation of the composition of electrolytes in the individual compartments of the separation system (inlet vial, capillary, and outlet vial) affected both the migration times and the resolution of the enantiomers. Current vs. time dependencies also were monitored during the separations. A mathematical model of electromigration in micellar systems with chiral selector present was proposed and a computer simulation was used to explain the observed phenomena and to confirm the generation of a CD/SDS-micelle concentration gradient under certain experimental conditions. This is the reported first attempt of a computer simulation of the complex, dynamic chiral environment of the CD-SDS-MCE system.     

Metallocycle synthesis accelerated by high pressure

Reaction of cis-[FeH₂(dmpe)₂](1) with diphenylbutadiyne results in an insertion into both of the iron-hydride bonds to form an iron metallocycle. Spectroscopic and crystallographic data of [Fe(PhHCC₂CHPh)(dmpe)₂] (3) show 1,4-diphenylbutatriene is symmetrically bound to the metal via the central double bond. The reaction to form the metallocyclic complex is greatly accelerated by application of external pressure. A 41% yield of (3) is isolated after two days at atmospheric pressure or after approximately 75 min at 800MPa.     

The stereochemistry of the hydroboration rearrangement.

Hydroboration of 1,2-dimethylcyclopentene with BH₃·THF affords a product in which boron migrates $\text{stereospecifically}$ at low temperature into the cyclopentane ring. At higher temperatures subsequent (non-stereospecific) isomerisation occurs via a competing reaction mechanism.     

Polyethers. I. Polymerization of 2-methyl-2-butene oxide

2-Methyl-2-butene oxide (2,3-epoxy-2-methylbutane) was polymerized with modified alkylaluminum initiators a t low temperatures to a high-melting, crystalline, film-forming polymer. High yields and comparatively high molecular weights were obtained with Al(i-Bu)₃?xH₂O initiators in inert diluents. When such initiators were modified with acetylacetone they became ineffective. Ammonia could be substituted for water in formulating an active initiator. Attempts to prepare an active initiator in the presence of the monomer were unsuccessful indicsting competition with the water for Al(i-Bu)₃. Thermal decomposition of the polymer produced methyl isopropyl ketone with some pivaldehyde.
