Heavy metal content of stormwater runoff in St. Petersburg

A procedure has been developed for the prediction of heavy metal concentrations in storm rainfall in St. Petersburg on the assumption of equal rates of metal influx with precipitations to the Baltic Sea and St. Petersburg territory. The concentrations of mercury, copper, and zinc in stormwater runoff from different administrative districts of the city have been calculated, and the predicted values have been compared with those determined experimentally.     

Trophic status of fresh-water lakes in China

In the article the trophic status of thirty one fresh-water lakes of China was described. Four lakes are characterized as mesotrophic, seventeen lakes have eutrotrophic status, and ten lakes are hypertrophic. Critical phosphorus loading for five biggest fresh-water lakes was calculated. The relationship between average and maximal depth of 141 lakes was revealed.     

Geoecological justification of the ultimate levels of nutrients export from the territories of the Baltic Sea basin

Method for estimating the maximum allowable nutrient runoff from the territories of the Baltic Sea basin, which takes into account the heterogeneity of the catchment area has been drawn up. The method includes the integration of background components of runoff.     

Scattering of evanescent electromagnetic waves by a cylinder near the flat boundary: the Green function and fast numerical method

The scattering of plane evanescent waves by a cylinder is studied. The Green function for the Helmholtz equation for two dielectrics with flat interface is found and applied for the numerical calculation of the scattered field by the boundary elements method. The Green function keeps close track of scattering, including multiple reflections. The result may be applicable for the data analysis in near-field optical microscopy.     

Concentration of metals in soils of St. Petersburg

Statistically significant relationships have been found between the concentrations of metals in soils in different administrative districts of St. Petersburg and their abundances in the Earth’s crust (clarkes).     

A Comparison of Two Variational Methods

A discussion is given of the relation between the maximum functionaltheorem and Schwinger's variational principle, and it is shownthat the bound given by Schwinger's principle is better thanor the same as that given by the maximum functional theorem.
