Recycling in telomerization of butadiene with D‐xylose: Pd(TPPTS)n‐KF/Al2O3 as an active catalyst

Parametric Centers for Trigonometric Abel Equations

This article is devoted to one-dimensional perturbative theory on R × S ¹. There is a recursive formula for the successive obstructions to parametric center at any order of the perturbation parameter. The first obstruction is studied by means of complex analysis techniques. This extends to the trigonometric case what was done previously for the polynomial case (Israel J. Math. 142, 273–283, 2004). Structural and electronic comparative analysis of aminopyridazines showing anti-GABA activity. Crystal structure of 2-(carboxy-3′-propyl)-3-amino-6-cyclohexylpyridazinium bromide.Ab initio Mulliken population analysis of the 6-phenyl-substituted analog compared to GABA

The crystal structure of 2-(carboxy-3-propyl)-3-amino-6-cyclohexylpyridazinium bromide has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques and refined by full-matrix least squares. The compound crystallized in the tri-clinic space groupP ¯1 witha=10.275(1),b=11.215(1),c=7.082(1) Å,=91.84(1),=102.21(1), =106.77(1)°, andZ=2. FinalR-factor is 0.045. The main structural results are very similar to the ones observed for the 6-phenyl analog. These two compounds are GABA-A antagonists.Ab initio molecular orbital calculations, with STO-3G and 4-31G basis sets, suggest that the exocyclic nitrogen accurately mimics the nitrogen atom of GABA.     

Medicinal chemistry in academia: molecular recognition with biological receptors

Why carry out medicinal chemistry at a university, when it means competing with the billion-dollar research efforts of the pharmaceutical industry? In academic research, the race to get a drug to market is not the prime motivation. Instead, university-based medicinal chemistry is driven by the search for new knowledge and the opportunity to educate a new generation of chemists. Furthermore, academia can complement commercial efforts by addressing diseases neglected by private industry.     

Fullerohelicates: a new class of fullerene-containing supermolecules

A multicomponent array made of a bis-copper(I) helicate core and two peripheral fullerene subunits has been prepared and electron transfer from the photoexcited Cu(I)-complexed unit to C60 occurs.

The 2-Phenyl-4,5-dimethylphosphorin P-W(CO)₅ complex reacts easily as a dienophile with 2,3-dimethylbutadiene through its 1,6-positions and as a diene with N-phenylmaleimide, dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and cyclopentadiene, through its 1,4-positions.     

Experimental observation of light-induced solitary waves of analyte bands in capillary electrophoresis.

The phenomenon of electrophoresis in free solution has been studied theoretically down to the molecular level for decades. In addition, intermolecular photo-induced proton transfer reactions, which occur in a wide class of molecules (phenols and aminoarenes) as well as proteins (green fluorescent protein), were also studied extensively. However, the study of the effect of light-induced electrophoretic mobility changes of the analytes in electrophoresis was begun only recently. In the present work, capillary zone electrophoresis was chosen as the environment to measure the magnitude of these electrophoretic mobility shifts induced by light. Background electrolytes (running electrolytes) with high refractive indices were developed, allowing the capillary to work like an optical fiber. The experimental conditions for obtaining stable coupling and guided laser light along the liquid core are discussed. Experimental evidence of band compression is observed, leading to a solitary wave behavior of the analyte band (2-naphthol). These solitary waves result from competition between thermal diffusion (dispersion mechanism) and a nonlinear (band compression) effect due to the combined electrophoresis phenomenon and absorption of guided light by the molecules of the band (which are subjected to a "reversible intermolecular proton transfer reaction" as one of their decay routes). The possibilities of applying this effect to different methods and techniques are also discussed.     

The Legacy of Raimond Castaing

 In April 1998 Raimond Castaing left the world of electrons, of ions and others particles, his wife and his family, his numerous students, for the world of stars. Raimond Castaing (Fig. 1) had a very strong personality. No one will forget their first meeting with him and all his students remember how brilliant he was as a teacher. A lot of anecdotes about his famous hot temper are still circulating among his friends and his former students. But in this paper, we would like to evoke Castaing’s memory through his achievements in Instrumental Physics, from the time of his doctoral thesis to later developments with his students, which were all centred on the imaging of the microstructures of materials and their quantitative chemical analysis.
