We present a full treatment of the microcanonical ensemble of the ideal hadron-resonance gas starting from a quantum-mechanical formulation which is appropriate for the statistical model of hadronization. By using a suitable transition operator for hadronization we are able to recover the results of the statistical theory, particularly the expressions of the rates of different channels. Explicit formulae are obtained for the phase space volume or density of states of the ideal relativistic gas in quantum statistics as a cluster decomposition, generalizing previous ones in the literature. Monolayers of poly-methacrylates containing either aromatic or linear side groups were studied at the air-water interface. The aim of the work is to define the role of the aromatic group in determining the interfacial distribution and orientation of these polymers. Surface pressure measurements show that all the polymers give stable expanded monomolecular films between 288 K and 308 K temperature range.Surface potential and ellipsometric measurements show that both aromatic and aliphatic polymers are in an almost horizontal conformation at the liquid-air interface. From a comparison of the experimental isotherms with Huggins' theory, it was deduced that no preferential interactions exist between benzene rings in the film. In contrast, preferential attractive energies are observed for n-alkylmethacrylates.Further information on the state of the collapsed film was obtained from electron scanning micrographs. 相似文献

A systematic investigation is reported on the regeneration of alpha-tocopherol (alpha-TOH) in homogeneous solution by coantioxidants in order to better understand the mechanism and the factors responsible for the effectiveness of this process. The current availability of thermochemical data concerning the reactants involved in the regeneration reactions, as well as a large number of the kinetic constants for the various reactions involved, allowed us to rationalize the experimental observations collected so far. Three limiting cases have been considered. The first case is that of a coantioxidant irreversibly regenerating alpha-TOH, where the effectiveness of the recycling process depends on the magnitude of the rate constant k(r). The second case is that of a coantioxidant reversibly recycling alpha-TOH, where regeneration can only be observed if the bond dissociation enthalpy value of the coantioxidant is lower or at least close to that of the O-H bond of alpha-tocopherol. The third case is that of a catechol derivative (chosen as a model compound for polyphenolic antioxidants), where recycling of alpha-TOH is feasible even though the BDE value is significantly higher than that of vitamin E. In this case, the driving force for the recycling process is the removal of the semiquinone radical from the catechol derivative by the alpha-tocopheroxyl radical, which makes the regeneration of alpha-TOH practically irreversible. 相似文献

The causes of foxing, a rust-red spotting of engravings, books and archive documents, are not yet completely understood, but they are usually ascribed to mould growth and/or heavy-metal-induced degradation of cellulose and sizing materials. In the present work we report the use of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, image analysis and atomic force microscopy as non-destructive tools for the surface analysis of foxing stains in respect of their chemical and physical characteristics. Background
Parkinson's disease, a prevalent neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by the reduction of dopaminergic neurons resulting in the loss of motor control, resting tremor, the formation of neuronal inclusions and ultimately premature death. Two inherited forms of PD have been linked to mutations in the α-synuclein and parkin genes. The parkin protein functions as an ubiquitin ligase targeting specific proteins for degradation. Expression of human α-synuclein in Drosophila neurons recapitulates the loss of motor control, the development of neuronal inclusions, degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and the ommatidial array to provide an excellent genetic model of PD.Results
To investigate the role of parkin, we have generated transgenic Drosophila that conditionally express parkin under the control of the yeast UAS enhancer. While expression of parkin has little consequence, co-expression of parkin with α-synuclein in the dopaminergic neurons suppresses the α-synuclein-induced premature loss of climbing ability. In addition directed expression of parkin in the eye counteracts the α-synuclein-induced degeneration of the ommatidial array. These results show that parkin suppresses the PD-like symptoms observed in the α-synuclein-dependent Drosophila model of PD.Conclusion
The highly conserved parkin E3 ubiquitin ligase can suppress the damaging effects of human α-synuclein. These results are consistent with a role for parkin in targeting α-synuclein to the proteasome. If this relationship is conserved in humans, this suggests that up-regulation of parkin should suppress α-synucleinopathic PD. The development of therapies that regulate parkin activity may be crucial in the treatment of PD.9.
A study on the regeneration of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) by phenolic co-antioxidants in homogeneous hydrocarbon solution is reported. The behavior of some relevant phenols such as BHA, BHT, and trans-resveratrol appears to be nicely predicted by a model based on the knowledge of kinetic and thermochemical data concerning the various reactants. Despite its good reputation as an antioxidant, trans-resveratrol was found only moderately effective (k(inh) = 2.0 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1) in chlorobenzene at 303 K) and unable to recycle vitamin E. 相似文献

The phase behavior of rod-plate mixtures was investigated using model systems containing unambiguously rod- and plate-shaped colloids. We find that the theoretically disputed biaxial nematic phase is unstable with respect to demixing into an isotropic and two uniaxial nematic phases. The phase behavior at very high densities is exceptionally rich and includes the coexistence of up to four different liquid crystalline phases, which stem from the coupling between the employed particle shapes and polydispersity. 相似文献
