Ketene dithioacetal derivatives of 1-phenyl-3,5-dioxopyrazolidine. Synthesis and NMR characterization

1-Phenyl-3,5-dioxopyrazolidine 1 reacts with carbon disufide and alkyl halides in presence of excess of sodium acetate in dimethylformamide to afford the ketene dithioacetals 3a-h . The ¹³C chemical shift assignments of these compounds were made on the basis of two-dimensional nmr studies performed on the N-methylketene dithioacetal derivative 4.     

New cis-clerodane diterpenoids from Croton schiedeanus

The acid fraction of extracts from the aerial part of Croton schiedeanus afforded six cis-clerodane type diterpenoids. Two of them (1 and 4) are new natural compounds. Structural elucidation was achieved on the basis of their spectral data.     

Ultrasound-assisted continuous liquid-liquid extraction without phase separation and hydrolysis of paracetamol in suppositories

An automated flow injection (FI) manifold based on iterative change of the flow direction has been designed to carry out continuous liquid-liquid extraction without phase separation and hydrolysis both with ultrasound-assistance. The dynamic approach has been applied to suppositories from which paracetamol has been extracted in this way into an aqueous phase and hydrolysed prior to reaction with o-cresol in the alkaline medium used as extractant. The three linked reactions, extraction-hydrolysis-derivatisation, cause displacement of the balance to completeness. The strategic location of the photometric flow-cell in the flow-injection manifold enables monitoring of the overall process and the obtaining of a characteristic multipeak recording. The influence of ultrasounds on the different steps was investigated. The indophenol blue dye formed was monitored at 620 nm. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of the method are 0.38 and 0.64 μg ml⁻¹, respectively, with a linear range from 0.64 to 50 μg ml⁻¹; a within-laboratory reproducibility between 2.07 and 4.66% and repeatability from 2.01 to 4.63%, both expressed as relative standard deviation. The results obtained with the proposed method are in excellent agreement with those provided by the official method, but with a shorter analysis time, lower sample and reagent consumption and less analyst involvement.     

An easy route to pentacyclic terpenylquinones

Cyclisation of terpenylnaphthohydroquinone derivatives or terpenylquinone cycloadducts, obtained from methyl myrcecommunate, was performed in the presence of HI, I₂ or BF₃·OEt₂ and provides efficient synthetic strategies for the preparation of pentacyclic terpenylquinones.     

Ultrasound-assisted crystallization (sonocrystallization)

The positive influence of ultrasound (US) on crystallization processes is shown by the dramatic reduction of the induction period, supersaturation conditions and metastable zone width. Manipulation of this influence can be achieved by changing US-related variables such as frequency, intensity, power and even geometrical characteristics of the ultrasonic device (e.g. horn type size). The volume of the sonicated solution and irradiation time are also variables to be optimized in a case-by-case basis as the mechanisms of US action on crystallization remain to be established. Nevertheless, the results obtained so far make foreseeable that crystal size distribution, and even crystal shape, can be ‘tailored’ by appropriate selection of the sonication conditions.     

ClcR-based biosensing system in the detection of cis-dihydroxylated (chloro-)biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of organic pollutants that are persistent when released into the environment. Among the metabolites of PCBs, dihydroxylated PCBs are also considered as toxic compounds. Various studies have shown that dihydroxylated PCBs affect the reproductive, immune, nervous, and endocrine systems. Detection of these chemicals in environmental and biological samples could provide first-hand information about their levels and lead to a better understanding of their role in toxicity. To that end, we developed a sensing system for the detection of dihydroxylated PCBs based on the clc operon. The Pseudomonas putida clc operon encodes a catabolic pathway for degradation of chlorocatechols, which are major metabolites of a large number of chlorinated compounds. In P. putida, the expression of these genes is regulated by a protein encoded by the gene clcR located upstream from the clcABD genes. We demonstrate here for the first time that dihydroxy PCBs can also induce the clc operon. Our sensing system employs P. putida bacteria harboring a plasmid in which the reporter gene, lacZ, is under the control of the regulatory protein ClcR. Consequently, when exposed to dihydroxy PCBs, the bacteria express β-galactosidase in an amount related to the concentration of the corresponding dihydroxy PCB. Various dihydroxylated PCBs, differing in the number and position of chlorines and in the position of hydroxyls, were tested for their ability to induce expression of β-galactosidase. Detection limits as low as 1×10⁻⁶ mol L⁻¹ were obtained for various dihydroxylated PCBs. L 2-Harmonic 1-Forms on Submanifolds with Finite Total Curvature

Let $x:M^{m}\to\bar{M}$ , m≥3, be an isometric immersion of a complete noncompact manifold M in a complete simply connected manifold $\bar{M}$ with sectional curvature satisfying $-k^{2}\leq K_{\bar{M}}\leq0$ , for some constant k. Assume that the immersion has finite total curvature in the sense that the traceless second fundamental form has finite L ^m -norm. If $K_{\bar{M}}\not\equiv0$ , assume further that the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of M is bounded from below by a suitable constant. We prove that the space of the L ² harmonic 1-forms on M has finite dimension. Moreover, there exists a constant Λ>0, explicitly computed, such that if the total curvature is bounded from above by Λ then there are no nontrivial L ²-harmonic 1-forms on M.     

Chemical constituents of the bark of Dipteryx alata vogel, an active species against Bothrops jararacussu venom

The effect of four sub-extracts prepared from the lyophilized hydroalcoholic bark of Dipteryx alata (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) dissolved in a methanol-water (80:20) mixture through a liquid-liquid partition procedure has been investigated against the neuromuscular blockade of the venom of the snake Bothrops jararacussu. The active CH?Cl? sub-extract has been extensively analyzed for its chemical constituents, resulting in the isolation of four lupane-type triterpenoids: lupeol, lupenone, 28-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-3-one, betulin, nine isoflavonoids: 8-O-methylretusin, 7-hydroxy-5,6,4'-trimethoxyisoflavone, afrormosin, 7-hydroxy-8,3',4'-trimethoxyisoflavone, 7,3'-dihydroxy-8,4'-dimethoxyisoflavone, odoratin, 7,8,3'-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone, 7,8,3'-trihydroxy-6,4'-dimethoxyisoflavone, dipteryxin, one chalcone: isoliquiritigenin, one aurone: sulfuretin and three phenolic compounds: vanillic acid, vanillin, and protocatechuic acid. Their chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, including HRMS, 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques.     

Velocity renormalization and carrier lifetime in graphene from the electron-phonon interaction

We present a first-principles investigation of the phonon-induced electron self-energy in graphene. The energy dependence of the self-energy reflects the peculiar linear band structure of graphene and deviates substantially from the usual metallic behavior. The effective band velocity of the Dirac fermions is found to be reduced by 4%-8%, depending on doping, by the interaction with lattice vibrations. Our results are consistent with the observed linear dependence of the electronic linewidth on the binding energy in photoemission spectra.
