This paper presents a model for optimally designing a collateralized mortgage obligation (CMO) with a planned amortization class (PAC)-companion structure using dynamic cash reserve. In this structure, the mortgage pool’s cash flow is allocated by rule to the two bond classes such that PAC bondholders receive substantial prepayment protection, that protection being provided by the companion bondholders. The structure we propose provides greater protection to the PAC bondholders than current structures during periods of rising interest rates when this class of bondholders faces greater extension risk. We do so by allowing a portion of the cash flow from the collateral to be reserved to meet the PAC’s scheduled cash flow in subsequent periods. The greater protection is provided by the companion bondholders exposure to interest loss. To tackle this problem, we transform the problem of designing the optimal PAC-companion structure into a standard stochastic linear programming problem which can be solved efficiently. Moreover, we present an extended model by considering the quality of the companion bond and by relaxing the PAC bondholder shortfall constraint. Based on numerical experiments through Monte Carlo simulation, we show the utility of the proposed model.  相似文献

Robust models have a major role in portfolio optimization for resolving the sensitivity issue of the classical mean–variance model. In this paper, we survey developments of worst-case optimization while focusing on approaches for constructing robust portfolios. In addition to the robust formulations for the Markowitz model, we review work on deriving robust counterparts for value-at-risk and conditional value-at-risk problems as well as methods for combining uncertainty in factor models. Recent findings on properties of robust portfolios are introduced, and we conclude by presenting our thoughts on future research directions.  相似文献

The concepts of portfolio optimization and diversification have been instrumental in the development and understanding of financial markets and financial decision making. In light of the 60 year anniversary of Harry Markowitz’s paper “Portfolio Selection,” we review some of the approaches developed to address the challenges encountered when using portfolio optimization in practice, including the inclusion of transaction costs, portfolio management constraints, and the sensitivity to the estimates of expected returns and covariances. In addition, we selectively highlight some of the new trends and developments in the area such as diversification methods, risk-parity portfolios, the mixing of different sources of alpha, and practical multi-period portfolio optimization.  相似文献

Increased criticism has been directed in recent years at the present fixed step salary method used for compensating civil servants. Under this method the relative monetary value of an individual to the department of agency is based only on two factors: civil service grade and the number of years of experience in the particular grade. This paper describes how two mathematical programming methods, linear programming and goal programming, can be applied to determine a civil service salary structure for the New York State Department of Transportation (Region 10). Portfolio risk estimation in volatile markets requires employing fat-tailed models for financial returns combined with copula functions to capture asymmetries in dependence and an appropriate downside risk measure. In this survey, we discuss how these three essential components can be combined together in a Monte Carlo based framework for risk estimation and risk capital allocation with the average value-at-risk measure (AVaR). AVaR is the average loss provided that the loss is larger than a predefined value-at-risk level. We consider in some detail the AVaR calculation and estimation and investigate the stochastic stability.  相似文献

Risk management through marginal rebalancing is important for institutional investors due to the size of their portfolios. We consider the problem of improving marginally portfolio VaR and CVaR through a marginal change in the portfolio return characteristics. We study the relative significance of standard deviation, mean, tail thickness, and skewness in a parametric setting assuming a Student’s t or a stable distribution for portfolio returns. We also carry out an empirical study with the constituents of DAX30, CAC40, and SMI. Our analysis leads to practical implications for institutional investors and regulators.  相似文献

Most of previous work on robust equity portfolio optimization has focused on its formulation and performance. In contrast, in this paper we analyze the behavior of robust equity portfolios to determine whether reducing the sensitivity to input estimation errors is all robust models do and investigate any side-effects of robust formulations. Therefore, our focus is on the relationship between fundamental factors and robust models in order to determine if robust equity portfolios are consistently investing more in the factors opposed to individual asset movements. To do so, we perform regressions with factor returns to explain how robust portfolios behave compared to portfolios generated from the Markowitz’s mean-variance model. We find that robust equity portfolios consistently show higher correlation with the three fundamental factors used in the Fama-French factor model. Furthermore, more robustness among robust portfolios results in a higher correlation with the Fama-French three factors. In fact, we show that as equity portfolios under no constraints on portfolio weights become more robust, they consistently depend more on the market and large factors. These results show that robust models are betting on the fundamental factors instead of individual asset movements.  相似文献
