Formation of mixed complexes in the extraction of indium with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol

A detailed study has been made of the extraction of indium into chloroform by 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN). The rate of extraction is maximal if the PAN is added to the aqueous phase and is not added as its chloroform solution. The ratio of indium to PAN is 1:1 and the cationic complex can be extracted only if a suitable anion is present, such as acetate or chloride.     

Effects of Photobiomodulation on Daphnia magna Straus and their Sensitivity to Toxicant

This paper deals with the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) on Daphnia magna S. and their sensitivity to cadmium sulfate, a known high toxic pollutant. In a first series of experiments, the effect of different He-Ne laser fluences irradiation (range 0.9-4300 mJ cm⁻²) on the fertility of both parent and filial generations (F1–F3) of the crustacean was studied. It was found that PBM in some cases significantly influenced the fertility of both irradiated crustaceans and their nonirradiated offspring. By selecting two fluences (9 ± 2 mJ cm⁻² reducing fertility and 4.3 ± 0.9 J cm⁻² increasing it), the effect of these on toxicity of cadmium sulfate was evaluated. These experiments have shown that prior irradiation with low-intensity light of a helium–neon laser with 632.8 nm wavelength can change the sensitivity of aquatic organisms to toxin cadmium sulfate. The degree and direction of changes depend on the toxicant concentration and the irradiation dose.     

Synthesis of thiacyanine dyes containing coumarin moieties at benzothiazole rings

New bischromophoric dyes (thiacarbocyanine and thiadicarbocyanine) containing coumarin moieties at each of the two benzothiazole systems, as well as monomethinecyanine containing coumarin moiety at only one heterocyclic system, manifest significant batho-chromic shift compared to relative coumarin-free dyes.

Capillary zone electrophoresis as a simple approach for the study of p-arsanilic acid transformation in the process of photolytic degradation

Arsenic aromatic compounds including p-arsanylic acid (pASA) are still widely used in a number of countries as the feed additives in animal breeding resulting in its entering the environment. Under the influence of oxidizing agents or UV radiation, pASA undergoes transformations leading to generation of inorganic arsenic species that are more mobile and toxic than organic ones. On the one hand, an approach based on the treatment of contaminated waters by UV irradiation seems perspective for their detoxification, but the feasibility of this approach depends on the composition of the products forming as a result of photodegradation. In the present work, a CZE was applied for the study of the pASA degradation process during stationary (308 nm) photolysis in the presence of Fe(III)-oxalate complex. A developed assay allowed controlling the parent compounds and also As-containing products of pASA degradation, presented mainly by arsenate and arsenite ions. It was found that the main inorganic derivatives of the pASA photolytic conversions are presented by arsenate and arsenite ions whose ratio depends on the initial amount of pASA and reaction conditions.     

Multigrid method for solving convection-diffusion problems with dominant convection

A modification of the multigrid method for the solution of linear algebraic equation systems with a strongly nonsymmetric matrix obtained after difference approximation of the convection-diffusion equation with dominant convection is proposed. Specially created triangular iterative methods have been used as the smoothers of the multigrid method. Some theoretical and numerical results are presented.     

Vortex lattice matching effects in a washboard pinning potential induced by Co nanostripe arrays

An advanced mask-less nanofabrication technique, focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID), has been employed on epitaxial Nb thin films to prepare ferromagnetic decorations in the form of an array of Co stripes. These substantially modify the non-patterned films’ superconducting properties, providing a washboard-like pinning potential landscape for the vortex motion. At small magnetic fields B ? 0.1 T, vortex lattice matching effects have been investigated by magneto-transport measurements. Step-like drops in the field dependencies of the films resistivity ρ(B) have been observed in particular for the vortex motion perpendicular to the Co stripes. The field values, corresponding to the middle points of these drops in ρ(B), meet the vortex lattice parameter matching the pinning structure’s period. These disagree with the results of Jaque et al. (2002) [11], who observed matching effects corresponding to the stripe width in Nb films grown on periodically distributed submicrometric lines of Ni.
