Local solution for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with periodic conditions

In this article we prove a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation (u _t +u _xxx +uu _x ) _x −u _yy =0) in the Sobolev spaces of orders≥3, with initial values in the same spaces, and periodic boundary conditions. This theorem improves previous results based upon the application of singular perturbation techniques.     

An analytical proof of Hardy-like inequalities related to the Dirac operator

We prove some sharp Hardy-type inequalities related to the Dirac operator by elementary, direct methods. Some of these inequalities have been obtained previously using spectral information about the Dirac-Coulomb operator. Our results are stated under optimal conditions on the asymptotics of the potentials near zero and near infinity.     

Long-Range proton-proton coupling constants. I. Propanic coupling involving a methyl group 4JMeH

An equation is formulated on the basis of theoretical INDO/FPT calculations which describes the angular dependence of the propanic long-range coupling constant ⁴J_MeH in substituted HCCCH₃ fragments. This equation is a truncated Fourier series in the torsion angle ?, HCCMe, which takes into account the dependence of the Fourier coefficients on the bond angle θ, CCMe. The substituent effects are assumed to be additive. Some parameters in the equation may be obtained from the ⁴J_MeH couplings in propane and neopentane derivatives. The calculated effect upon ⁴J_MeH of changes in the bond angle θ is significant and it seems to be in part the cause of some effects which have been attributed to conformational dependence.     

Sensitised decomposition of microcystin-LR using UV radiation

UV radiation was applied to degrade cyanobacterial hepatotoxin, microcystin-LR in the presence of phycocyanin as a model natural sensitiser. The concentrations of both the toxin and the pigment used in the experiments were higher by several orders of magnitude than found in the environment. The photoreaction parameters were optimised. The process was found to be of limited use for water treatment due to its low efficacy. Additionally, pronounced UV-induced bleaching of the pigment significantly reducing the photoreaction rates of the toxin was observed for the highest UV radiation intensities applied.     

Naproxen: Hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin:Polyvinylpyrrolidone Ternary Complex Formation

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of the presence of thewater-soluble polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) MW = 24000 g/mol, on thecomplexation of the phototoxic anti-inflammatory drug naproxen, in its sodiumsalt form, with hydroxypropil-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). The datashown that the polymer interacts with the free naproxen and with thenaproxen:HP-β-CD inclusion complex. The presence of different proportions of PVP, in the 0–1%(w/w) rangesystematically increased the K_app of the naproxen:HP-β-CD inclusioncomplex formation. The cause of this increase is that the polymer interactswith the HP-β-CD with a binding constant of K₂ = 29000 ± 53 M^-1; and with the naproxen:HP-β-CD inclusion complex, to givea ternary complex naproxen:HP-β-CD:PVP. The binding constant of thisprocess was K₃ = 5350 ± 1 M^-1. NMR data revealed that in the ternary system, PVP is outside of the cyclodextrin, and therefore must be wholly or partially recovering the naproxen:HP-β-CD inclusion complex.     

Determination of complex formation constants by phase sensitive alternating current polarography: Cadmium-polymethacrylic acid and cadmium-polygalacturonic acid

The use of phase sensitive alternating current polarography (ACP) for the evaluation of complex formation constants of systems where electrodic adsorption is present has been proposed. The applicability of the technique implies the previous selection of the phase angle where contribution of capacitive current is minimized. This is made using Multivariate Curve Resolution by Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) in the analysis of ACP measurements at different phase angles. The method is checked by the study of the complexation of Cd by polymethacrylic (PMA) and polygalacturonic (PGA) acids, and the optimal phase angles have been ca. −10° for Cd-PMA and ca. −15° for Cd-PGA systems. The goodness of phase sensitive ACP has been demonstrated comparing the determined complex formation constants with those obtained by reverse pulse polarography, a technique that minimizes the electrode adsorption effects on the measured currents.
