Status of heavy element research using a gas-filled recoil separator at RIKEN

A gas-filled type of recoil separator for heavy element research was installed at an experimental hall of RIKEN Linear Accelerator facility to realize getting higher intensity of primary beam and long beam time. Performance of the separator was studied using target recoils and various nuclear reactions. The results show the high performance of the separator for heave element research. As an application of the GARIS, production and identification of an isotope of the 110th element ²⁷¹[110] have been performed using the ²⁰⁸Pb(⁶⁴Ni,1n)²⁷¹[110] reaction. Three decay chains coincide well both in decay times and energies with the ones reported by the group of SHIP experiment at GSI, Germany. Our results provide a confirmation of the synthesis of an isotope ²⁷¹[110] of element 110.     

Changes in the near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectra of long-chain diacetylene derivatives through photopolymerization in Langmuir–Blodgett films

Photopolymerization of cadmium 10,12-pentacosadiynoate (CdDA) in Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films, with the molecular packing well arranged by moderate preannealing, was investigated with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Greenish films of polydiacetylene with an absorption wavelength of 705 nm were obtained through the photopolymerization of preannealed monomer LB films, and this resulted in an extended π-conjugate system based on the well-ordered monomer in a two-dimensional arrangement. The electronic structures of the polydiacetylenes were found to be correlated to the variation of the molecular arrangements in the films from the changes in the NEXAFS spectra through photopolymerization in the LB films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrochiroptical systems based on biphenyl-2,2′-diyl-type dicationic dyes: strong chiroptical signals through the transmission of point chirality to axial chirality

Huge CD amplitude (A = +538) was attained by diastereomeric preference (50% de) for the title dication with two bis[4-(R)-sec-butoxyphenyl]methylium units in benzene at 23 °C. Intramolecular π-π stacking is the origin for effective transmission of point chirality to axial chirality to attain the chiroptical enhancement of 400-times. Thanks to the strong CD signaling, chiroptical changes upon electrolysis could be readily detected, thus realizing a new class of electrochiroptical response systems. Chiroptical properties could also be modified by solvent polarity.     

On the space curves with the same image under the gauss maps

From an irreducible complete immersed curveX in a projective space ? other than a line, one obtains a curveX ^′ in a Graasmann manifoldG of lines in ? that is the image ofX under the Gauss map, which is defined by the embedded tangents ofX. The main result of this article clarifies in case of positive characteristic what curvesX have the sameX′: It is shown thatX is uniquely determined byX′ ifX, or equivalentlyX′, has geometric genus at least two, and that for curvesX ₁ andX ₂ withX ₁ ≠X ₂ in ?, ifX′₁ =X′₂ inG and eitherX ₁ orX ₂ is reflexive, then bothX ₁ andX ₂ are rational or supersingular elliptic; moreover, examples of smoothX ₁ andX ₂ in that case are given.     

Synthesis of 3-epi-6,7-dideoxyxestobergsterol A

3-Epi-6,7-dideoxyxestobergsterol A (2), an analogue of xestobergsterol A, has been synthesized from dehydroepiandrosterone (3) in 15 steps. The key synthetic intermediate, 15beta,16alpha-dioxypregn-17(20)E-ene derivative 8, was prepared from the corresponding 15beta,16beta-epoxide 6 by treating with acetic acid and titanium tetraisopropoxide. The 23-oxo side chain was constructed stereoselectively by orthoester Claisen rearrangement of 8 followed by introduction of an isobutyl group. Basic treatment of the 15,23-diketone 12 followed by deprotection gave the title compound 2.     

Elastic moduli and structure of low density polyethylene

Summary Low density polyethylene film is drawn at room temperature four times the original length and subjected to thermal annealing at 60, 80, and 100 °C keeping the film length constant. Long spacing measured by SAXS increased with increasing temperature of annealing; the increase of the long spacing is presumed to be due to the decrease of the number of micelles through relaxation during the annealing. Simultaneous measurement of the changes of the long spacing and the film length by stretching is carried out and stress-extension curves are obtained. The values of the initial moduli of the long spacingE ₁ and the film lengthY are very near to each other. Elastic modulus of the crystal latticeE _c is known to be 235 GN/m² and that of the amorphous regionE _a is found to be 0.15 GN/m². When higher stress is applied than in the case of the initial modulus, the percentage of extension of film is much greater than that of the long spacing. The discrepancy is explained by the increase of the number of micelles through stress crystallization.Dedicated to Professor Dr. K. Ueberreiter on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
