Several studies have reported prevalence rates for voice disorders in school-aged children. Less is known, however, about such prevalence in preschoolers, and whether racial, ethnic, or cultural diversity may influence it. The presence of voice disorders in a total of 2445 African-American and European-American preschool children, 1246 males and 1199 females, from 2 to 6 years of age is reported here. Presence of a voice disorder characterized by hoarseness was identified by a three-prong approach including teacher identification, investigator screening, and parent identification. Speech-language pathologists listened individually to each child's speech as they engaged each child in play-conversation activities. A voice disorder was identified on the basis of the judgment of two speech-language pathologists. Voice disorders characterized by hoarseness were identified in 95 children or 3.9% of the total sample by the investigators. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences for age, gender, or race.  相似文献

We have characterized, in vitro, interactions between hippocampal neuronal cells and silica microbeads coated with synthetic, fluid, lipid bilayer membranes containing the glycosylphosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-linked extracellular domain of the postsynaptic membrane protein neuroligin-1. These bilayer-neuroligin-1 beads activated neuronal cells to form presynaptic nerve terminals at the point of contact in a manner similar to that observed for live PC12 cells, ectopically expressing the full length neuroligin-1. The synthetic membranes exhibited biological activity at neuroligin-1 densities of approximately 1 to 6 proteins/microm(2). Polyolycarbonate beads with neuroligin-1 covalently attached to the surface failed to activate neurons despite the fact that neuroligin-1 binding activity is preserved. This implies that a lipid membrane environment is likely to be essential for neuroligin-1 activity. This technique allows the study of isolated proteins in an environment that has physical properties resembling those of a cell surface; proteins can diffuse freely within the membrane, retain their in vivo orientations, and are in a nondenatured state. In addition, the synthetic membrane environment affords control over both lipid and protein composition. This technology is easily implemented and can be applied to a wide variety of cellular studies.  相似文献

A practical method for the separation and purification of cucurbituril (CB) hexamers was developed on the basis of affinity chromatography using aminopentylaminomethylated polystyrene beads. This recyclable resin, which can be used repeatedly, facilitates the general preparation of cucurbituril derivatives and compensates for the usually moderate yields and mixed products that characterize the acid-catalyzed synthesis of CB derivatives. This technique allows convenient, rapid isolation of rare substituted cucurbiturils, including hexacyclohexanocucurbit[6]uril and dodecamethylcucurbit[6]uril. [reaction: see text]  相似文献

Two front instabilities in a reaction-diffusion system are shown to lead to the formation of complex patterns. The first is an instability to transverse modulations that drives the formation of labyrinthine patterns. The second is a nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch (NIB) bifurcation that renders a stationary planar front unstable and gives rise to a pair of counterpropagating fronts. Near the NIB bifurcation the relation of the front velocity to curvature is highly nonlinear and transitions between counterpropagating fronts become feasible. Nonuniformly curved fronts may undergo local front transitions that nucleate spiral-vortex pairs. These nucleation events provide the ingredient needed to initiate spot splitting and spiral turbulence. Similar spatiotemporal processes have been observed recently in the ferrocyanide-iodate-sulfite reaction.  相似文献

Antibody 38C2 efficiently catalyzes deuterium-exchange reactions at the alpha position of a variety of ketones and aldehydes, including substrates that have a variety of sensitive functional groups. In addition to the regio- and chemoselectivity of these reactions, the catalytic rates (kcat) and rate-enhancement values (kcat/kun) are among the highest values ever observed with catalytic antibodies. Comparison of the substrate range of the catalytic antibody with highly evolved aldolase enzymes, such as rabbit-muscle aldolase, highlights the much broader practical scope of the antibody, which accepts a wide range of substrates. The hydrogen-exchange reaction was used for calibration and mapping of the antibody active site. Isotope-exchange experiments with cycloheptanone reveal that the formation of the Schiff base species (as concluded from the 16O/18O exchange rate at the carbonyl oxygen) is much faster than the formation of the enamine intermediate (as concluded from the H/D exchange rate), and both steps are faster than the antibody-catalyzed aldol addition reaction.  相似文献

The thermal decomposition processes of carbonate minerals are analyzed by comparison of the notions on chemical bonds in crystals and modern concepts on solid-phase reactions. It is shown that depending on the mechanism of thermal dissociation, the carbonate minerals most widespread in nature may be divided into two groups: first, CaCO3, SrCO3 and BaCO3, characterized by decomposition temperatures close to the equilibrium values and undergoing recombination on cooling; and second, MgCO3, MnCO3, FeCO3 and ZnCO3, with dissociation temperatures exceeding the equilibrium values by 250° and recombining only at high partial pressures of CO2 (above 1000 bar).
Zusammenfassung Die thermischen Zersetzungsprozesse von Carbonatmineralien wurden auf der Basis der Vorstellungen über die chemischen Bindungen in Kristallen und moderner Konzeptionen über Festphasenreaktionen analysiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass die in der Natur weitverbreitetsten Carbonatmineralien, abhängig vom Mechanismus der thermischen Zersetzung, in zwei Gruppen unterteilt werden können: die erste umfasst CaCO3, SrCO3 und BaCO3 und ist durch Zersetzungstemperaturen nahe den Gleichgewichtswerten und durch Rekombination beim Abkühlen charakterisiert, zur zweiten gehören MgCO3, MnCO3, FeCO3 und ZnCO3 mit Dissoziationstemperaturen, die die Gleichgewichtswerte um etwa 250° überschreiten, und die nur bei hohen CO2-Partialdrücken (über 1000 bar) rekombinieren.

We investigate one of the fundamental reactions in solutions, the neutralization of an acid by a base. We use a photoacid, 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-trisulfonate-pyrene (HPTS; pyranine), which upon photoexcitation reacts with acetate under transfer of a deuteron (solvent: deuterated water). We analyze in detail the resulting bimodal reaction dynamics between the photoacid and the base, the first report on which was recently published. We have ascribed the bimodal proton-transfer dynamics to contributions from preformed hydrogen bonding complexes and from initially uncomplexed acid and base. We report on the observation of an additional (6 ps)(-1) contribution to the reaction rate constant. As before, we analyze the slower part of the reaction within the framework of the diffusion model and the fastest part by a static, sub-150 fs reaction rate. Adding the second static term considerably improves the overall modeling of the experimental results. It also allows to connect experimentally the diffusion controlled bimolecular reaction models as defined by Eigen-Weller and by Collins-Kimball. Our findings are in agreement with a three-stage mechanism for liquid phase intermolecular proton transfer: mutual diffusion of acid and base to form a "loose" encounter complex, followed by reorganization of the solvent shells and by "tightening" of the acid-base encounter complex. These rearrangements last a few picoseconds and enable a prompt proton transfer along the reaction coordinate, which occurs faster than our time resolution of 150 fs. Alternative models for the explanation of the slower "on-contact" reaction time of the loose encounter complex in terms of proton transmission through a von Grotthuss mechanism are also discussed.  相似文献

The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the following six compounds have been examined over a wide range of temperatures: four derivatives of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole substituted at the nitrogen atom by organometallic groups such as Si(CH3)3 (I), Si(C2H5)3 (II), Si(OC2H5)3 (III), Ge(CH3)3 (IV), 3,5-dimethyl-1-trimethylsilyl-1,2,4-triazole (V) and 1-trimethylsilylimidazole (VI). Activation energies of the metal migration have been found for the compounds (I–V) by the total NMR line-shape analysis. Proton and carbon spectra of the compound (VI) show equivalence of the positions 4 and 5 in the imidazole ring. No temperature-dependent changes in the spectra were observed at –80 to +80°. These facts may be interpreted by assuming that the organometallic group undergoes an intermolecular exchange.  相似文献
