Reactions between metals and chloride solutions have been shown to exhibit magnetic field fluctuations over a wide range of size and time scales. Power law behavior observed in these reactions is consistent with models said to exhibit self-organized criticality. Voltage fluctuations observed during the dissolution of magnesium and aluminum in copper chloride solution are qualitatively similar to the recorded magnetic signals. In this paper, distributions of voltage and magnetic peak sizes, noise spectra, and return times are compared for both reactions studied.  相似文献

We report on harmonic generation by budding yeast cells in response to a sinusoidal electric field, which is seen to be minimal when the field amplitude is less than a threshold value. Surprisingly, sodium metavanadate, an inhibitor of P-type ATPases reportedly responsible for nonlinear response in yeast, reduces the threshold field amplitude, increasing harmonic generation at low amplitudes while reducing it at large amplitudes, whereas the addition of glucose dramatically increases the production of even harmonics. Finally, a simple model is proposed to interpret the observed behavior.  相似文献

The dielectrophoresis (DEP) phenomenon is used to separate platelets directly from diluted whole blood in microfluidic channels. By exploiting the fact that platelets are the smallest cell type in blood, we utilize the DEP-activated cell sorter (DACS) device to perform size-based fractionation of blood samples and continuously enrich the platelets in a label-free manner. Cytometry analysis revealed that a single pass through the two-stage DACS device yields a high purity of platelets (approximately 95%) at a throughput of approximately 2.2 x 10(4) cells/second/microchannel with minimal platelet activation. This work demonstrates gentle and label-free dielectrophoretic separation of delicate cells from complex samples and such a separation approach may open a path toward continuous screening of blood products by integrated microfluidic devices.  相似文献

The detection and quantification of nucleic acid and proteomic biomarkers in bodily fluids is a critical part of many medical screening and diagnoses. However, majority of the current detection platforms are not ideal for routine, rapid, and low-cost testing in point-of-care settings. To address this issue, we developed a concept for a disposable universal point-of-care biosensor that can detect and quantify nucleic acid and proteomic biomarkers in diluted serum samples. The central tenet of sensing is the use of dielectrophoresis, electrothermal effects, and thermophoresis to selectively and rapidly isolate the biomarkers of interest in electrodes and then quantify using electrical impedance. When the sensor was applied to quantify microRNA and antigen biomarker molecules directly in diluted serum samples, it produced a LOD values in the fM range and sensitivity values from 1012 to 1015 Ω/M with a 30 min assay time and assay cost of less than $50 per assay.  相似文献
