Single molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer has been extensively used to measure distance changes and kinetics in various biomolecular systems. However, due to complications involving multiple de-excitation pathways of the dyes, the absolute inter-dye distance information has seldom been recovered. To circumvent this we directly probe the relative variations in the quantum yield of individual fluorophores. B-DNA was used as a scaffold to position the donor (Cy3 or TMR) at precise distances from the acceptor (Cy5) within the Forster radius. We found that the variation in the Cy3 quantum yield is approximately 5 times larger than that of TMR. By taking into account the molecule-to-molecule variability in the acceptor/donor quantum yield ratio, the apparent fluorescence resonance energy transfer efficiencies were scaled to yield the theoretical values. We obtained very good agreement with a physical model that predicts distances along B-DNA. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Here, we present the effect of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on dielectric and electro-optical parameters of a newly prepared ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture, namely W302. The FLC mixture, comprising of pyrimidine compounds, was characterised through dielectric spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and other electro-optical methods. The material parameters such as spontaneous polarisation, rotational viscosity, response time and tilt angle of W302 were found to be 14 nC/cm2, 240 mPa.s, 150 µs and 28?, respectively. The phase transition temperatures of W302 were observed through DSC and further confirmed by the dependence of dielectric loss factor in homogeneously aligned FLC sample with temperature. We also demonstrate the observance of a low-frequency dielectric relaxation mode due to the unwinding of the helix, called as partially unwound helical mode (p-UHM) along with Goldstone mode. The behaviour of p-UHM has been systematically studied with temperature and applied bias field. Further, dispersion of nCuO into host W302 has shown a significant increase in dielectric permittivity. Also, the p-UHM relaxation peak in the dielectric regime has disappeared with the incorporation of nCuO. These studies would be useful to fabricate better electro-optical devices for display, switching and beam steering applications. The formulation and characterization of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture W302 composed of pyrimidine compounds is presented. In this article, a newly synthesised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, namely LAHS 22, has been characterised. The characterisation of the FLC material has been performed using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarisation optical microscopy. We observed an enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material by incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs)-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs cause an increment in dielectric dispersion (up to kHz), absorption, spontaneous polarisation and rotational viscosity of the FLC material. The pure and GNPs-decorated MWCNTs doped FLC cells were analysed by means of various dielectric spectroscopic and optical measurements. The observed enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material has also been studied with concentration of GNPs-decorated MWCNTs in FLC material. The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs/FLC composites are not only of fundamental importance, but also useful materials for device applications such as liquid crystal displays and memory devices. 相似文献

In this study, size and shape controlled biogenic synthesis of gold nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity against food borne bacterial pathogens were investigated. Synthesis of gold nanoparticles was carried out using two medicinally important plants Cucurbita pepo and Malva crispa and the size and shape of the nanoparticles were controlled by altering various parameters in the reaction medium. Results obtained from UV–Vis, FE-SEM, EDS and HR-TEM analyses supported the nanoparticles formation. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of biomolecules in the plant leaves extracts responsible for reducing and capping agents. Interestingly, the plant extract synthesized gold nanoparticles showed effective inhibition zone against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of synthesized gold nanoparticles at 400 μg/ml concentration showed effective inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Conductivity of the medium continuously increased during the nanoparticles treatment with food borne bacterial pathogens resulting in indirect indication of the disruption of bacterial cell membranes. In addition, mode of interactions of gold nanoparticles against food borne bacterial pathogens was demonstrated using Bio-TEM analysis which is clear evident for the disruption of bacterial cell membranes. 相似文献

Organic phosphors have been widely explored with an understanding that crystalline molecular ordering is a requisite for enhanced intersystem crossing. In this context, we explored the room‐temperature phosphorescence features of a solvent‐free organic liquid phosphor in air. While alkyl chain substitution varied the physical states of the bromonaphthalimides, the phosphorescence remained unaltered for the solvent‐free liquid in air. As the first report, a solvent‐free liquid of a long swallow‐tailed bromonaphthalimide exhibits room‐temperature phosphorescence in air. Doping of the phosphor with carbonyl guests resulted in enhanced phosphorescence, and hence a large‐area paintable phosphorescent liquid composite with improved lifetime and quantum yield was developed. 相似文献

We report the first fluorescent diamino-chalcone library and its application in the discovery of a mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) probe. CDg4, a novel green fluorescent mESC probe was discovered through a high-content image based screening of 160 members of the chalcone library. Interestingly, the molecular binding target of CDg4 was identified as the glycogen of the stem cell colony surface, rather than a conventional protein target from an intracellular source. 相似文献

By linking the urea moiety at the 1,8 positions of the carbazole fragment, we synthesized host systems 1, 2, and 3 having both chromogenic and fluorogenic signaling subunits. The spectral changes in both the signaling subunits could be easily analyzed via a simple 2-dimensional (2D) analytic approach described here, which enables us to differentiate the given set of anions. This paper outlines the synthesis and characterization of O‐allyl aralkyl phenolic (O‐allyl Xylok, OAX) resins having low melt viscosity and its Alder‐ene blends with 2, 2′‐bis 4‐[(4′‐maleimido phenoxy) phenyl] propane. The blends manifested a three‐stage curing pattern that converged to a two‐stage pattern on enhancing the maleimide content. The polymerization kinetics of typical allyl and maleimide rich resin systems showed apparent activation energy increasing and pre‐exponential factor decreasing from ene to the Diels–Alder step. Increased allyl content improved mechanical and impact properties of the composites at ambient temperature, although it diminished the retention of interlaminar shear strength at elevated temperature. Increased maleimide content of the resin was conducive for the higher rigidity for the composite and its retention at elevated temperature. A substantial increase in Tg (from 153°C to 280°C) and thermal stability was observed with an increase in maleimide content. High allyl content resulted in improved mechanical properties thanks to better resin–reinforcement interaction as revealed from morphological analysis. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The detailed characterization of complex mixtures by NMR is often hampered by the presence of signals from uninformative compounds, the resonances of which overlap with those of the molecules of interest. We provide here a proof of principle for an approach to NMR signal suppression in complex samples using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPS). Addition of a few milligrams of polymer to a solution traps the target molecule in typical micromolar to millimolar concentration, thus achieving in situ signal suppression, without altering any other spectral features. This method minimized any manipulation or perturbation of the spectrum and was applied to a complex mixture of known compounds and to a plant extract, in both cases spiked with a compound (bisphenol A), which was subsequently removed by selective binding to a complementary MIP. What is described in this report is comparable with microextraction and may in due course be applied to a large number of analytical challenges. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
