Ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of a multicomponent anticholinergic drug formulation

N,N'-Trimethylene-bis-(pyridinium-4-aldoxime)dibromide, 4-pyridine aldoxime, atropine sulfate, benactyzine hydrochloride, methyl paraben and propyl paraben are separated by ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography. The method is specific for detecting and quantifying each compound in a complex mixture without solvent extraction or pretreatment. Levels as low as 1 ng on column are quantifiable by the procedure. All components are eluted within 9 min subsequent to the initial injection. Because of the simplicity of the method, the procedure is suitable for routinely monitoring the stability of the various compounds in the formulation during storage.     

A Supramolecular Coordination-Polymer-Derived Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

An iron oxide decorated nickel iron alloy nanoparticle/porous graphene hybrid exhibits high electrocatalytic activity and excellent durability toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It displays a low overpotential of 274 mV at 10 mA cm⁻², and low Tafel slope of 37 mV dec⁻¹, showing a superior performance to the state-of-the-art RuO₂ OER electrocatalyst.     

Operator algebras and a theorem of Dieudonne

LetA be aC*-algebra with second dualA″. Let (φ _n)(n=1,...) be a sequence in the dual ofA such that limφ _n(a) exists for eacha εA. In general, this does not imply that limφ _n(x) exists for eachx εA″. But if limφ _n(p) exists whenever p is the range projection of a positive self-adjoint element of the unit ball ofA, then it is shown that limφ _n(x) does exist for eachx inA″. This is a non-commutative generalisation of a celebrated theorem of Dieudonné. A new proof of Dieudonné’s theorem, for positive measures, is given here. The proof of the main result makes use of Dieudonné’s original theorem.

Radial oscillations of neutron stars in strong magnetic fields

The eigen frequencies of radial pulsations of neutron stars are calculated in a strong magnetic field. At low densities we use the magnetic BPS equation of state (EOS) similar to that obtained by Lai and Shapiro while at high densities the EOS obtained from the relativistic nuclear mean field theory is taken and extended to include strong magnetic field. It is found that magnetized neutron stars support higher maximum mass whereas the effect of magnetic field on radial stability for observed neutron star masses is minimal.     

Controlling dispersion and migration of particulate additives with block copolymers and Diels-Alder chemistry

Reversible Diels-Alder chemistry was exploited to develop thermo-responsive polymer films. Here, low molecular weight poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were prepared with furyl and maleimido chain ends, respectively. These polymers were then tethered together to form a thiol-terminated PEG-b-PS diblock copolymer ligand via a Diels-Alder linkage and were employed to randomly disperse 10 nm diameter Au nanoparticles within a matrix of PEG. Thermal treatment caused the Diels-Alder linkages between the polymer blocks to be severed, resulting in controllable surface functionalization due to phase separation. Migration of the Au nanoparticles to the surface of the films was characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, contact angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy.
