Use of cyclotron-produced isotopes for analytical investigation: Determination of vanadium in gallium

The extraction of the V(V)-BPHA complex into chloroform and benzene was investigated using⁴⁸V tracer produced from the⁴⁵V reaction using the Variable Energy Cyclotron, Calcutta. A neutron activation analysis procedure for the estimation of vanadium in gallium metal samples based on the extraction of V(V)-BPHA complex into benzene is given.     

Molar extinction coefficients of some carbohydrates in aqueous solutions

Molar extinction coefficients of some carbohydrates viz. l-arabinose (C₅H₁₀O₅), d-glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d-mannose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d-galactose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d(-) fructose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and maltose (C₁₂H₂₄O₁₂) in aqueous solutions have been determined at 81, 356, 511, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV by gamma ray transmission method in a narrow beam good geometry set-up. These coefficients have been found to depend upon the photon energy following a 4-parameter polynomial. These extinction coefficients for different sugars having the same molecular formula have same values varying within experimental uncertainty. Within concentration ranges studied, Beer-Lambert law is obeyed very well.     

Functionalized SBA-15 and its Catalytic Applications in Selective Organic Transformations

Ordered, mesoporous SBA-15 functionalized with organic and inorganic moieties exhibits efficient catalytic activity in a variety of organic transformations. In this account, reviewing our own work, three-sets of surface-modified SBA-15 materials have been investigated. The first-set of materials consists of SBA-15 modified with organo-acidic (propyl thiol and propyl sulfonic acid) and basic (propyl amine and propyl adenine) moieties. The second-set of materials was prepared by grafting Mn complexes to the organo-functionalized SBA-15. The third-set composes of nanocrystalline metal oxides supported on SBA-15. All these catalysts have been characterized by structural and spectroscopic techniques. Catalytic activities of the first-set of solid materials have been investigated in acid/base-catalyzed reactions viz., ring-opening of epoxides with amines (producing β-amino alcohols), esterification, three-component-Mannich reactions and cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxides. The Mn complexes grafted on organofunctionalized SBA-15 are efficient catalysts for the chemo-, regio- and stereoselective aerial oxidation of monoterpenes at ambient conditions. TiO_x, VO_x, MoO_x and WO_x supported on SBA-15 catalyzed biomimetic oxyhalogenation of aromatic compounds. In all these reactions, the functionalized SBA-15 showed high selectivity.     

An approximation algorithm for a symmetric Generalized Multiple Depot, Multiple Travelling Salesman Problem

In this paper, we present an algorithm with an approximation factor of 2 for a Generalized, Multiple Depot, Multiple Travelling Salesman Problem (GMTSP) when the costs are symmetric and satisfy the triangle inequality. The algorithm requires finding a degree constrained minimum spanning tree which we compute using a Lagrangian relaxation.

Determination of rare earth elements in Gd2O3 by ICP-OES

Summary Rare earth impurities in high-purity Gd₂O₃ have been determined by ICP-OES. HREE except Ho were analysed by directly nebulising 1 mg/ml of the matrix solution and the LREE were analysed after separation on an anionexchange Dowex 1×8 resin. The recovery studies show nearly 100% separation. The determination of 30 ppm of HREE in gadolinium oxide is possible.     

Homoconjugation in the adamantane cage: DFT/IGLO studies of the 1, 3-dehydro-5-adamantyl cation, its isoelectronic boron analogue 1, 3-dehydro-5-boraadamantane, and related systems(1)(,)

The structure of 1,3-dehydro-5-adamantyl cation and its isoelectronic boron analogue 1,3-dehydro-5-boraadamantane as well as some related adamantane systems, hitherto unknown as persistent long-lived species, were investigated by using the density functional theory (DFT) method. (13)C and (11)B NMR chemical shifts of the compounds were also calculated using the IGLO method. Stabilization of the systems due to homoconjugation is discussed.     

Theoretical study of relative width of photonic band gap for the 3-D dielectric structure

Calculations for the relative width (Δω/ω₀) as a function of refractive index and relative radius of the photonic band gap for the fcc closed packed 3-D dielectric microstructure are reported and comparison of experimental observations and theoretical predictions are given. This work is useful for the understanding of photonic crystals and occurrence of the photonic band gap.
