Efficient synthesis of a nucleoside-diphospho-exo-glycal displaying time-dependent inactivation of UDP-galactopyranose mutase

A short and efficient synthesis of UDP-exo-galactofuranosyl-glycal is presented. This molecule displayed an interesting time-dependent inactivation of UDP-galactopyranose mutase, an essential enzyme of the mycobacterial cell wall biosynthesis.

The cover picture shows how thrombosis occurs in the deep veins of the lower limbs. Stasis, which results from slow and turbulent blood flow, combined with hypercoagulation, caused, for example, by a surgical procedure, may result in thrombus formation. The synthetic sulfated pentasaccharide shown in part is a potent antithrombotic compound that exerts its effect by activation of the plasma protein antithrombin III. Conformationally locked monosaccharides have now been synthesized to demonstrate that L-iduronic acid, one part of the pentasaccharide, must adopt an unusual distorted conformation to activate antithrombin III. Such conformational effects might be relevant in explaining the unique biological properties of glycosaminoglycans that contain L-iduronic acid. In the background of the picture, a flight of vampire bats is attracted by the pentasaccharide. Vampire was the name given to South American blood-sucking bats (Latin name: desmodus rotundus) in 1761 by the French naturalist Georges Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). These bats are known to attack cattle and, very rarely, sleeping human beings. Although their saliva has been shown to contain an anticoagulant compound, they would also be happy to benefit from the pentasaccharide mentioned above, to suck the blood out of the vein more easily. A kinematical study of Kirchhoff-Rayleigh flow

Summary A method of calculating the separated flow of a viscous fluid is proposed, which allows to split up properly the boundary condition problem from the viscous phenomena. The theory is developed for the flow past a plate and yields wakes of finite extension having an underpressure which depends directly on the amount of vorticity diffusion and dissipation occurring in the fluid. Application of the method to real flows shows good agreement between the calculated and the measured velocity distributions in front of the plate and in the wake.

Résumé Une méthode de calcul de l'écoulement décollé d'un fluide visqueux est proposée qui permet de séparer clairement le problème aux limites des phénomènes visqueux. La théorie est développée pour l'écoulement autour d'une plaque et donne des sillages de longueur finie ayant une dépression de culot directement dépendante de l'intensité de la diffusion et dissipation de la vorticité se produisant dans le fluide. L'application de la méthode à des écoulements réels montre une bonne concordance entre les répartitions de vitesse calculées et mesurées sur le devant de la plaque et dans le sillage.

     

Stereoselective RhI-catalyzed tandem conjugate addition of boronic acids-Michael cyclization

The first examples of the stereoselective sequence RhI-catalyzed tandem conjugate addition of boronic acids to enones-Michael cyclization, is reported. The reaction is carried out in dioxane-H2O at rt, and 1,2,3-trisubstituted indans are obtained in a highly regio- and stereoselective fashion.     

Gas phase activation energy for unimolecular dissociation of biomolecular ions determined by focused RAdiation for gaseous multiphoton ENergy transfer (FRAGMENT)

We present a novel approach for the determination of activation energy for the unimolecular dissociation of a large (>50 atoms) ion, based on measurement of the unimolecular dissociation rate constant as a function of continuous-wave CO(2) laser intensity. Following a short ( approximately 1 s) induction period, CO(2) laser irradiation produces an essentially blackbody internal energy distribution, whose 'temperature' varies inversely with laser intensity. The only currently available method for measuring such activation energies is blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD). Compared with BIRD, FRAGMENT: (a) eliminates the need to heat the surrounding ion trap and vacuum chamber to each of several temperatures (each requiring hours for temperature equilibration); (b) offers a three-fold wider range of effective blackbody temperature; and (c) extends the range of applications to include initially cold ions (e.g., gas-phase H/D exchange). Our FRAGMENT-determined activation energy for dissociation of protonated bradykinin, 1.2 +/- 0.1 eV, agrees within experimental error to the value, 1.3 +/- 0.1 eV, previously reported by Williams et al. from BIRD experiments. Domino metathesis of 2-azanorbornenones: a new strategy for the enatioselective synthesis of 1-azabicyclic compounds

Domino metathesis of N-alkylated derivatives of (1S)-2-azanorborn-5-en-3-one allowed for the enantioselective synthesis of pyrrolizidine, quinolizidine, pyrrolidinoazepine, and pyrrolidinoazocine derivatives in a straightforward process.     

Preparation and reductive lithiation of 2-deoxy-D-glucopyranosyl phenylsulfones: A highly stereoselective route to C-glycosides

2-Deoxy-D-glucopyranosyl phenylsulfones 3a–c have been synthesized in 75–83% yield from commercial tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal 1. Their reductive desulfonylation by lithium naphthalenide and reaction of the intermediate glycosyl-lithium 5 with aldehydes leads to α-D-C-glucopyranosides with high stereoselectivity.
