Growth and magnetic characterization of YBCO films

Summary Epitaxial films of YBa₂Cu₃O_7−x were depositedin situ on LaAlO₃ substrates using single-target 90° off-axis sputtering. The films were characterized by magnetization measurements (M vs. T, H), applying the field parallel toc-axis. The observed differences in theT _c andJ _c values are attributed to the different oxygen content in the superconducting films. R.F. (280 MHz) EPR imaging of extended samples: Apparatus and preliminary results

This paper presents the preliminary results obtained using an Electron Paramagnetic Resonance imaging apparatus operating at 280 MHz. The acquisition technique and the procedure used to obtain the spin density spatial localization are presented and specimen images of extended samples are given. The accuracy of the images and the spatial resolution are also discussed.     

A remark on the KAM theorem applied to a four-vortex system

We consider a planar four-vortex system with unit intensities and apply the KAM theorem for two-dimensional tori with fixed frequency. We obtain a rigorous lower bound for the stochasticity threshold of the torus with rotation number=(5—1)/2 and compare our result with numerical experiments.     

The application of column redox-extraction chromatography to the separation of some actinide elements

The application of a new technique to the separation of some actinide elements by means of a single reducing and extracting column is described. Tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) was used as the extractant. The following reducing agents were supported on microporous polyethylene together with TOPO: tetrachlorohydroquinone, 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthahydroquinone, 2,5-di-tert-butylhydroquinone and 2,5-di-tert-pentylhydroquinone. The last compound was chosen for the separation experiments; it allowed quantitative reduction of plutonium to Pu(III) and of neptunium to Np(IV). The separations Pu(III)-Np(IV), Pu(III)-U(VI) and Am(III)-Np(IV) in 6 M hydrochloric acid were obtained.     

UV stabilizers bonded to transition metals: Synthesis and X-ray structure of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole-oxovanadium(IV) and -dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes

The UV-stabilizer 2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-methylphenyl)benzotriazole (Tinuvin P, LH) has been used as a monoanionic bidentate ligand for complexing oxocations. Displacement of acacH from [VO(acac)₂] and [MoO₂(acac)₂] gave [*VO(acac)₂*(μ-L)] (2) and [cis-O₂Mo(acac)L] (3) respectively, as crystalline compounds. Their structure has been determined by an X-ray analysis showing the structural changes occurring upon coordination. The UV spectrum of Tinuvin P is significantly affected by complexation.     

Intrinsic and Intramolecular Lipophilicity Effects in O-Glucuronides

In this study, we compared the lipophilicity of O-glucuronides and their aglycones. Distribution coefficients (log D) and P values of neutral species (log P) were determined by centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) in octanol/buffer systems. Two-phase potentiometry was also used to measure the log P value of some lipophilic solutes. The experimentally determined global influence of glucuronidation on lipophilicity, obtained as the difference (decrement) log P_{(glucuronide)} ? log P_(aglycone), was found to be ?1.30 ± 0.16 (n = 4) for glucuronides of alcohols (methyl, menthyl, neomenthyl, and chloramphenicol O-glucuronide). The mean decrement was ?2.06 ± 0.31 (n = 9) for glucuronides of phenols (phenyl, p-nitrophenyl, 1-naphthyl, 6-bromo-2-naphthyl, 4-methylumbelliferyl, 3-coumarinyl, phenolphthalein, 4′-benzophenonyl O-glucuronide, and diflunisal phenolic glucuronide). For the acylglucuronide of diflunisal and its rearrangement isomers, the mean decrement was ?1.80 ± 0.08 (n = 4; range ?1.7 to ?1.9). Differences in through-bond proximity effects as parametrized in the CLOGP algorithm seem to account for much of this difference. Conformational factors may also play a role, although it appears modest and unassessable for the glucuronides investigated here. The results imply that in vivo glucuronidation should have a stronger influence on the excretion of phenols than on that of alcohols.     

Bioavailability, bioaccumulation and tolerance of chromium: consequences in the food chain of freshwater ecosystems

Many abiotic and biotic factors can influence the partitioning equilibrium of heavy metals, thus influencing metal impact on aquatic environments. Unicellular algal species release soluble organic substances able to complex metals. In our laboratory a Cr-tolerant strain was selected and isolated from a wild type strain of Scenedesmus acutus. The exudates released by the two strains counteracted the growth inhibition caused by Cr(VI) and the exudates of the Cr-tolerant strain were more effective. On the contrary, the exudates did not reduce chromium toxicity to the cladoceran Daphnia magna. The reduction of chromium effect on algae seems the consequence of an algae-specific interaction among Cr(VI), exudates and algal cells. Chromium uptake resulted to be energy-dependent since bioaccumulation rate in subdued light condition was lower than at high light intensity. The effect of Cr(VI) on algae changed depending on metabolism of the cells and in particular it seemed to be related to the bioaccumulation rate. Tolerance in the selected strain could not be ascribed to a lower uptake of chromium. The difference in sensitivity to chromium between the two strains was exploited to evaluate if tolerance acquired by algae could have consequences for Daphnia. After treatment with Cr(VI), the two strains of S. acutus were used as food source for D. magna. The results indicate that chromium is accumulated by algae in a form not available for daphnids and that Cr tolerance acquired by the algae can be of some advantage to the consumer organism.
