Thermodynamic study of transthyretin association (wild‐type and senile forms) with heparan sulfate proteoglycan: pH effect and implication of the reactive histidine residue

The tetramer destabilization of transthyretin into monomers and its fibrillation are phenomena leading to amyloid deposition. Heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) has been found in all amyloid deposits. A chromatographic approach was developed to compare binding parameters between wild‐type transthyretin (wtTTR) and an amyloidogenic transthyretin (sTTR). Results showed a greater affinity of sTTR for HSPG at pH 7.4 compared with wtTTR owing to the monomeric form of sTTR. Analysis of the thermodynamic parameters showed that van der Waals interactions were involved at the complex interface for both transthyretin forms. For sTTR, results from the plot representing the number of protons exchanged vs pH showed that the binding mechanism was pH‐dependent with a critical value at a pH 6.5. This observation was due to the protonation of a histidine residue as an imidazolium cation, which was not accessible when TTR was in its tetrameric structure. At pH >6.5, dehydration at the binding interface and several contacts between nonpolar groups of sTTR and HSPG were also coupled to binding for an optimal hydrogen‐bond network. At pH <6.5, the protonation of the His residue from sTTR monomer when pH decreased broke the hydrogen‐bond network, leading to its destabilization and thus producing slight conformational changes in the sTTR monomer structure. Study of the charge-exchange reactions\pi ^ - p \to (\pi ^0 ,\eta ,\eta \prime )n at 63 GeV

Muon electron pairs were detected in an Al multiplate spark chamber, exposed to a neutrino beam from the CERN PS. The leptons were not accompanied by other particles, except occasionally by protons. The background came mainly from muon associated π⁰ production, with one decay gamma lost. It was determined empirically, together with the small contribution from υ _e reactions. For electron energies above 2 GeV the background is 5.7±1.5 events, whereas 18 (μe)-candidates have been observed. Hence the effect is established, with a rate of about 10^?4 as compared to the muonic reactions above 3 GeV. Charm creation as the origin of this (μe)-production process is excluded; heavy neutral lepton production does not fit the kinematics observed. Instead the events are compatible with the two-body decay of an object with variable invariant mass of order 1 GeV, possibly resulting from axion interactions.     

A versatile protocol for the preparation of substituted 1- and 2-naphthyl piperazines from aminonaphthols

Aminonaphthols are easily transformed into a variety of 1- and 2-naphthyl piperazines using a sequence of diazotization, iodide substitution and Pd(0) catalyzed coupling reactions.     

Local intersections of plane algebraic curves

We determine the maximum punctual order of contact between two plane algebraic curves, of which one is reduced. We prove that, generically on the reduced curve, this quantity is always strictly bounded by the product of the degrees of the curves.

     

Characterization of supercommuting matrices

For a given n-by-n matrix A, we consider the set of matrices which commute with A and all of whose principal submatrices commute with the corresponding principal submatrices of A. The properties of this set are examined, with particular attention to its dimension.     

RECONSTRUCTION OF BINARY RELATIONS FROM THEIR RESTRICTIONS OF CARDINALITY 2, 3, 4 and (n - 1) II

We shall prove here that any binary relation on a base E with cardinality n > 6 is reconstructible from its restrictions of cardinality 2, 3, 4 and (n - 1). This proof needs results of part I of this paper where we characterize any pair of relations R, R' which are 2-, 3- and 4-hypomorphic. As a corollary we obtain that any binary relation is (n - 4)-reconstructible (when n > 9).     

Inclusive\bar K^{0*} (892) andK 0*(892) production on silicon by 200 GeVK − andπ −

The production of the neutralK ^? (892) resonances by 200 GeVK ^? andπ ^? has been studied over the kinematic range 0.0<x _f<1.0 andp _t ² <5.0 GeV². Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. In addition the decay angular distributions inK ^? fragmentation to \(\bar K^{0*} \) have been investigated.     

SELECTIVE DEGRADATION OF AMINO ACIDS PHOTOSENSITIZED BY TRYPTOPHAN IN POLYPEPTIDE STRUCTURES

Polypeptides containing a basic amino acid close to their single tryptophan residue were irradiated with monochromatic 302 nm radiation. Tryptophan photolysis was monitored by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Amino acid loss was evaluated by amino acid analysis. Only the protonated residues adjacent to tryptophan in the sequence were destroyed upon tryptophan excitation. This reaction is probably due essentially to direct interaction between the excited tryptophan and the neighbouring residue without electron solvation.     

Lifetimes of charged and neutralD mesons

We have measured the lifetimes of hadronically produced charged and neutralD mesons using silicon microstrip detectors and an active silicon target in the NA32 spectrometer at the CERN SPS. We obtainτ _D± = (10.9± _1.5 ^1.9 )·10^?13s andτ _D ^(?)10 = (4.2±0.5)·10^?13s based on 59 and 90 fully reconstructed decays respectively, giving a ratioτ _D±/τ _D ^(?)10 of 2.6 ±0.5.
