Vascular morphology by three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging

A three-dimensional examination of blood vessels is provided using MR data from seven cases. The vascular surfaces are constructed with an algorithm that automatically follows the selected artery or vein and generates a projected three-dimensional gradient shaded image. Fast 3DFT pulse sequences were optimized to enhance the time-of-flight contrast of the intravascular region. By increasing the surface threshold value in a three-dimensional head study, the flesh of a patient's face was peeled away to demonstrate the superfacial temporal artery. Gated cardiac images show the great vessels and cardiac chambers. A three-dimensional view of the aorta shows an irregular surface in the vicinity of an adrenal tumor. 3D MR exams provide a non-invasive technique for assessing vascular morphology in a clinical setting.     

Negative luminescence from mid-wave infrared HgCdTe diode arrays

A self-referencing, optical modulation technique was used to measure the negative luminescence efficiencies of an array of mid-wave infrared HgCdTe photodiodes with cutoff wavelength 4.6 μm as a function of sample temperature. The internal efficiency at a wavelength of 4 μm was 93% at 295 K, and nearly independent of temperature in the 240–300 K range. This corresponds to an apparent temperature reduction >50 K at room temperature and >30 K at 240 K. Moreover, the reverse-bias saturation current density was only 0.13 A/cm². The measured transmission and emission spectra were simulated using empirical HgCdTe absorption formulas from the literature.     

Synthesis,characterization, and curing kinetics of novel ladder‐like polysilsesquioxanes containing side‐chain maleimide groups

Two ladder‐like polysilsesquioxanes (LPS) containing side‐chain maleimide groups have been synthesized successfully by reacting N‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)maleimide (HPM) with LPS containing 100 mol % of chloropropyl groups (Ladder A ) and 50 mol % of each methyl and chloropropyl group (Ladder B ). HPM was synthesized by reacting maleic anhydride with 4‐aminophenol, and the resulting amic acid was imidized using p‐toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst (Scheme 1 ). The LPSs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), proton‐decoupled ¹³C NMR, ²⁹Si NMR, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Characterization indicated that these polymers had ordered ladder‐like structures with possible defects. These polymers were soluble in common solvents at ambient temperature, which suggested that they were not crosslinked. Both the polymers and the HPM were cured, and their kinetics were followed by dynamic DSC. The Ozawa and Kissinger methods were used to calculate activation energies for curing. The Systematics of Muonium Hyperfine Constants

The hyperfine constants for muonium in elemental and binary inorganic solids suggest formation of three different families of defect centre, with distinct electronic structures. The overall range of values, spanning nearly five orders of magnitude, and their correlation with host properties such as band gap and electron affinity, reveal a deep-to-shallow instability which has profound implications for the electrical properties of hydrogen impurity in electronic materials, both semiconducting and dielectric.     

Potent New Heterogeneous Asymmetric Catalysts

A set of new, air‐stable, Rh^I‐based heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation catalysts have been synthesised, characterised, and tested. Individual members of this new family all exhibit good enantioselectivity.     

What are We Developing? A Case Study of a College Mathematics Program

Over one‐third of all college mathematics enrollments are in courses considered to be developmental. While such courses have been the subject of a large body of research, one question that seems not to have been studied empirically is the alignment of the content of developmental and college level mathematics courses. This paper gives the results of such a study, conducted at a medium sized public liberal arts university. While the content of the developmental mathematics courses was used subsequently in the Precalculus course, most of the content of the Intermediate Algebra course was not used in other college level mathematics courses. It is hoped that the results of this paper will serve as a catalyst for other institutions to examine carefully and define the mission of both their developmental and college level mathematics courses.
