On the construction of 2-substituted 1,4-diacetoxybutadiene moiety: application to the synthesis of (±)-caulerpenyne

The synthesis of 2-substituted 1,4-diacetoxybutadiene derivatives with a partial control of stereochemistry is described from two potentially precursor enals by a judicious choice of experimental conditions (Ac₂O/DMAP in Et₃N). These conditions have been successfully applied in the first total synthesis of caulerpenyne.     

Internal standardization for the determination of cadmium,cobalt, chromium and manganese in saline produced water from petroleum industry by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry after cloud point extraction

In the present paper a procedure is proposed for the determination of traces of Cd, Co, Mn and Cr in petroleum industry produced water by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The procedure is based on cloud point extraction of these metals, as their dithizonate complexes, into the surfactant-rich phase of octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol surfactant (Triton X-114). Extractions were carried out in solutions with salinities between 10‰ and 70‰. Since residual salinity in the surfactant-rich phase caused differences in its transport to the plasma, yttrium was used as an internal standard to correct for this effect. The simultaneous metal extraction procedure was optimized by response surface methodology using a Doehlert design and desirability function. Enhancement factors of 21, 21, 9 and 19, along with limits of quantification of 0.093, 0.20, 0.73 and 1.2 μg L^− 1, and precision expressed as relative standard deviation (n = 8, 20.0 μg L^− 1) of 5.8, 1.2, 1.7 and 5.7% were obtained for Cd, Co, Mn and Cr, respectively. The accuracy was evaluated by spike recovery tests on the high salinity water samples with salinity of 40 and 63‰.     

Carbonylation of (+)-2-carene induced by iron-pentacarbonyl.

(+)-2-carene heated neat with iron pentacarbonyl leads to α-phellandrene-Fe(CO)₃ complex ( ～15 % ), p. cymene ( ～15 % ), (-)-(1S)-3,8,8-trimethylbicyclo (4.1.1) oct-3-ene-7-one ( ～50 % ) and (+)-(1S,7S)-3,8,8-trimethylbicyclo (4.1.1.) oct-3-ene-7-ol ( ～20 % ).     

First total synthesis of 3-aza-11-thia-1,3,5(10)-trieno steroids

The first total synthesis of 3-aza-11-thia-1,3,5(10)-trieno steroids was achieved via an intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition of o-quinodimethanes as the key step.     

Palladium-tetraphosphine complex: an efficient catalyst for the coupling of aryl halides with alkynes

The cis,cis,cis-1,2,3,4-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)-cyclopentane-[PdCl(eta3-C3H5)]2 system catalyses the coupling of aryl halides with alkynes with very high ratios of substrates-catalyst in good yields; a turnover number of 2600000 can be obtained for the reaction of 4-trifluoromethylbromobenzene with phenylacetylene in the presence of this catalyst.     

Heck arylations of pent-4-enoates or allylmalonate using a palladium/tetraphosphine catalyst

The Heck reaction of aryl halides with functionalised alk-1-enes should be a powerful method for the synthesis of functionalised (E)-1-arylalk-1-ene derivatives. The major problem of this reaction is the palladium-catalysed migration of the carbon-carbon double bond along the alkyl chain when there are no substituents on the C3 carbon of the alk-1-enes. We observed that for the arylation of ethyl pent-4-enoate, ethyl 2-methylpent-4-enoate or dimethyl allylmalonate this migration could be partially or completely controlled using appropriate reaction conditions. The ramification on the alkyl chain and the substituents on the aryl halide have also an important influence on this migration. Moreover, the cis,cis,cis-1,2,3,4-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)cyclopentane/1/2[PdCl(C₃H₅)]₂ system catalyses this reaction with a wide range of aryl bromides using very high ratio substrate/catalyst in good yields.     

Determination of arsenic in petroleum refinery streams by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry after multivariate optimization based on Doehlert design

This paper reports the development of a methodology for the determination of arsenic in petroleum refinery aqueous streams containing large amounts of unknown volatile organic compounds, employing electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with polarized Zeeman-effect background correction. In order to make the procedure applicable, the influence of chemical modification and the drying step was examined. Also, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures and the amount of nitric acid added to the sample were optimized using a multivariate approach based on Doehlert matrix. Obtained results indicate that, in this kind of sample, arsenic must be determined by standard addition procedure with a careful control of the drying step temperature and ramp pattern. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the procedure, a test was performed in six spiked samples of petroleum refinery aqueous streams and the relative errors verified in the analysis of such samples (added As between 12.5 and 190 μg l⁻¹) ranged from −7.2 to +16.7%. The detection limit and the relative standard deviation were also calculated and the values are 68 pg and 7.5% (at 12.5 μg l⁻¹ level), respectively.     

First total synthesis of (+/-)-taxifolial a and (+/-)-iso-caulerpenyne

The first synthesis of (+/-)-taxifolial A and iso-caulerpenyne was accomplished. The key steps in the sequence are (1) the stereoselective assembly of a vinyltin derived from butynediol and a functionalized aldehyde and (2) the construction of the dienyne moiety via a Stille cross-coupling.     

Flow injection determination of cobalt after its sorption onto polyurethane foam loaded with 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol (TAC)

An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 mM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N=4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers.     

Heck reactions of 2-substituted enol ethers with aryl bromides catalysed by a tetraphosphine/palladium complex

cis,cis,cis-1,2,3,4-Tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)cyclopentane/[PdCl(C₃H₅)]₂ efficiently catalyses the Heck reaction of β-substituted enol ethers with aryl bromides. Employing β-methoxystyrene, 3-ethoxyacrylonitrile or methyl 3-methoxyacrylate, the regioselective α-arylation of these enol ethers was observed in all cases, and mixtures of Z and E isomers were generally obtained, which in many cases yielded a single ketone product after acid treatment. The stereoselectivity of this reaction depends on steric and electronic factors, and better stereoselectivities in favour of Z isomers were observed with electron-rich or sterically congested aryl bromides. Better yields were obtained for this reaction with electron-rich or sterically congested aryl bromides than with electron-poor aryl bromides. This observation suggests that with these β-substituted enol ethers the rate-limiting step of the catalytic cycle is not the oxidative addition of the aryl bromide to the palladium complex.
