A phase I, randomized study of combined IL-2 and therapeutic immunisation with antiretroviral therapy

Background  

Fully functional HIV-1-specific CD8 and CD4 effector T-cell responses are vital to the containment of viral activity and disease progression. These responses are lacking in HIV-1-infected patients with progressive disease. We attempted to augment fully functional HIV-1-specific CD8 and CD4 effector T-cell responses in patients with advanced chronic HIV-1 infection.     

Generalized Green's theories

A generalization is given of the relations and equivalences on a semigroup S associated with J. A. Green by introducing the concepts of Green's pairs and generalized Green's theories first on an arbitrary set X and finally on a semigroup S. Most of the results about the usual Green's relations and equivalences are proved, and it is shown that previous generalizations obtained by Wallace, Anscombre, Marki and Steinfeld, and Pastijn may be obtained as special cases of the theory developed. Dedicated to D. D. Miller in honor of his retirement at the University of Tennessee after 32 years of service.     

Using Primary Source Projects to teach undergraduate mathematics content: analysis of instructor implementation and perceptions

ABSTRACT

This study investigates changes in instructor teaching tendencies, instructor’s perception of impact on student learning and dispositions, and methods of implementation of Primary Source Projects (PSPs). PSPs are curricular modules designed to teach core mathematical topics from primary historical sources rather than from standard textbooks. In essence, they are a form of inquiry-based learning that incorporates the history of mathematics through original source texts. We provide an overview of results from two semesters of implementation reports and surveys administered at the beginning and end of the semester by instructors who implemented PSPs in their undergraduate mathematics classes.     

Femtosecond vibrational dynamics of self-trapping in a quasi-one-dimensional system

We have directly time resolved the lattice motions associated with the formation of the self-trapped exciton in the quasi-one-dimensional system [Pt(en)(2)] [Pt(en)2Br2];(PF6)(4) ( en = ethylene-diamine, C2H8N2), using femtosecond impulsive excitation techniques. A strongly damped, low-frequency wave packet modulation at approximately 110 cm(-1) accompanies the formation of the self-trapped exciton on a approximately 200 fs time scale following excitation of the intervalence charge-transfer transition. Coherent oscillations at the ground state vibrational frequency and its harmonics are also detected.     

Comparison of an empirical and a theoretical linear solvation energy relationship applied to the characterization of solute distribution in a poly(ethylene) glycol-salt aqueous biphasic system

A Linear Solvation Energy Relationship (LSER) developed by Abraham has been applied to the partition of organic solutes in an Aqueous Biphasic System (ABS) and to published values of their 1-octanol/water partition coefficients. The results are compared to the application of a conceptually similar Theoretical Linear Solvation Energy Relationship (TLSER) developed by Famini and co-workers. Differences and similarities in the molecular properties highlighted by each LSER are discussed. The theoretical relationship of Famini, although modeled on the approach of Abraham, seems not to encapsulate molecular properties in the same way as the Abraham's empirical relationship. However, this theoretical approach has the great merit of computational simplicity, and it is concluded that efforts directed toward its improvement could be rewarding.
