The purification of soluble fulvic acids (FA) based on a diafiltration technique is carried out on antarctic water and snow samples, characterised by low humic compound content (0.1-0.8 mg/l). Results are compared with those of FA purified with the dialysis technique that, together with ion-exchange resins, performs an often used purification process. With the adopted procedure it is possible to minimise the high content of inorganic salts deriving in part from the isolation method XAD-8 adopted, as shown by FTIR, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis.  相似文献

The first 40?cm of sediment of three basins in the Ross Sea were sampled using a box corer. Site Y1 was located close to the coast in Terra Nova Bay; the sediment of site Y3 was collected in a more distal basin in the central sector of the Ross Sea; finally site Y5 was sampled in the deepest zone of the Joides Basin.

Sediment cores were sliced and analysed with a depth resolution of 2–4.5?cm. The distribution of humic substances and their structural features along the cores were determined and related to the pattern of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and sedimentological data. The grain size distribution and the 210Pb inventories allow the sediment of the study sites to be characterised.

The humic substance content in the sediment decreases, with a change in slope between 23 and 26?cm at Y1, between 12 and 15?cm at Y3 and constant values with further depth. At Y5 the depth profile of humic substance content shows constant values in the upper 17?cm and values decrease with further depth. The pattern of humic substance yield is similar to that found for TOC. The analysis of the elemental composition of the humic acids extracted from different sediment depths shows an increasing C/N atomic ratio at sites Y1 and Y3 and constant values along the Y5 core. The depth profile of the C/N atomic ratio is confirmed by the changes observed in the structural characterisation and indicates a shift from the freshly deposited organic matter on the sediment surface to more humified material (humin). The results obtained highlight a different sedimentation rate at the three sites as deduced from sedimentological analysis.  相似文献

Effects of paper mill sludge addition on the availability of metals were studied on different soils both laboratory and naturally polluted; copper, lead and zinc concentrations were determined in Hordeum Distichum plants grown on the untreated and on sludge-treated soils. In some case a decrease of metal concentration is observed on sludge-treated soils; these results are consistent with the reduction of metal mobile forms in the soil, before plant growth. The decrease of metal availability in sludge-treated soils may be related with the pH value of the soil after sludge addition.  相似文献

Various analytical techniques ((13)C-NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis) have been used to study the structures of humic compounds present in the sediments of Martignano lake located 50 km from Roma city (Italy). The total amount of humic compounds present in the upper layer of sediments is practically constant; instead, considering humic (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) separately, it can be noticed that while HA increase remarkably from A(1) to A(3), FA diminish, probably as a result of the continuous transformation of algal debris, present in large amount in A(1), from compounds which are in an early stage of decomposition to more highly degraded organic matter. In deeper layers the percentage both of HA and FA is constant and slightly lower than that found in the upper layer, except for two sampling points. In these stations the amount of both HA and FA are very high and the carbohydrate peak areas of HA and FA increase along with the depth, reflecting the presence of a well localized source of organic carbon or different environmental conditions.  相似文献

The effects of humic acids and fulvic acids isolated from the River Arno (Italy) on the bioavailability and toxicity of cadmium and copper were assessed in relation to changes in their speciation. Measurements of the complexing capacity of solutions containing these organic ligands were carried out by a titration procedure followed by DPASV and toxicity tests were carried out using lysosomes isolated from rat liver. The complexing capacity of the physiological medium containing about 13 mg/L of humic acids, expressed as ligand concentrations, was 0.30 and 0.072 micromol/L for cadmium and copper respectively; the corresponding conditional stability constants were 4.2 x 10(11) and 1.3 x 10(8) (mol/L)-1. The complexing capacities of the solution containing the same amount of fulvic acids were 0.33 and 0.164 micromol/L for cadmium and copper respectively, the conditional stability constants were 3.2 x 10(11) and 2.4 x 10(7) (mol/L)-1. The humic acids reduced the toxicity of cadmium by about 5 times: the EC50 changed from 4.4 to 20.4 micromol/L. The dose effect curve of copper presented a bi-sigmoid trend and two EC50 values can be determined: The EC50(1) in the presence of humic acids changed from 2.0 to 3.1 micromol/L, while the EC50(2) increased from 22.3 to 45.3 micromol/L. The fulvic acids reduced the cadmium toxicity by about the same amount as humic acids, from 4.4 to 18.6 micromol/L, but they had no effect on copper toxicity. Analysing the chemical speciation of cadmium and copper in the presence of humic components and under toxicity test conditions we can say that the appreciable decrease of EC50 is not related to changes in their speciation; we can hypothesize that this is due to different processes, as well as to blocking of the lysosomal membrane. On the basis of the shape of the dose-effect curves obtained for cadmium and copper respectively, we can say that the toxic effects of the two metals are different and we can hypothesize that copper could exercise its toxic activity by inhibiting the ATP-driven proton pump and the function of the Cl- selective channel.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the presence of fulvic acids in Antarctic waters, as they appear to be principal film-forming components in the surface microlayer. We obtained a series of samples during two Antarctic Italian Expeditions in 1998/99 and 2000/01 and studied the distribution and the structural differences between fulvic acids extracted from both microlayer and subsurface waters.

Fulvic acids are concentrated in the microlayer and the enrichment factor between microlayer and subsurface water differs between samples. The enrichment factor values for fulvic acids lie between those found for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) in the literature. Fulvic acids extracted from the microlayer were found to be different in structure from those present in the subsurface layer and enriched in sulphur content. We hypothesised that sulphur-containing compounds are slightly bound and/or occluded in fulvic acid structures. The sulphur-containing compounds analysed in the microlayer could be dimethylsulfide (DMS) and/or its products stemming from photochemical and biological oxidation reactions.  相似文献

In soils characterized by low organic matter and high pH values (7.5-8.59) iron availability to plants is limited even if the content of total Fe(III) is high. We have studied by Hordeum distichum plants the capability of paper mill sludge to increase the iron phytoavailable fraction in an alkaline soil. The effect of paper mill sludges adding to an iron-deficient soil was evaluated both considering the phyto-available fraction of iron and the distribution of organic carbon (hydrophobic, fulvic and humic carbon) in the soil before and after sludge adding. Iron concentration was determined in the different portions of Hordeum distichum plants grown on soils with and without paper mill sludges. Application of paper mill sludge induces an increase in the concentration of available Fe. This effect is probably due to the production of Fe chelators by soil microorganisms acting on sludge organic matter. The Fe chelators produced result in the solubilization of not soluble Fe-complexes present in the soil.  相似文献

In this work the effects of sludge disposal on pH values, buffer capacity and adsorption capacity of an acid soil were studied. A stabilized waste water sludge and a paper mill sludge were employed; the pH values of both sludges were higher than 8. The observed differences between soil-urban sludge and soil-paper mill sludge systems can be ascribed to the nature of the compounds present in the sludges and adsorbed on the soil. Both kinds of sludge are able to modify the natural pH of the soil, the buffer capacity and its capacity to retain metal. These modifications increase with increasing soil-sludge contact time and are higher for paper mill sludges. Temperature affects only the modifications due to urban sludge treatment.  相似文献

Paper mill sludge (characterized by 29.0% of organic substances such as cellulose, lignin and tannins and 71.0% of inorganic substances such as kaolinite and carbonates) was studied in a mixture with soil in order to evaluate its effects on soil capability for retaining heavy metals. Attention was focused on cadmium and lead sorption and two parameters were investigated, the contact time of paper mill sludge-soil mixture and the paper mill sludge-soil ratio in the mixture. Results showed that paper mill sludge and soil interact to form ‘new’ sorbing sites. Taking into account sorption results of lead, the retention of which by soil is substantially increased by sludge addition, can highlight this modification. Also, the amount of sorbed cadmium was increased by sludge addition.  相似文献

Dissolved (DFA) and particulate (PFA) fulvic acids were studied in some areas of the Ross Sea (Antarctica) characterised by different water masses. Our interest was focused on their distribution in the water column. Moreover, their correlation with fluorescence data and structural characterisation in relation to the water masses was also studied. We found that PFA concentration was mainly influenced by the primary production in surface layers and by stratification of water masses along the water column. Conversely, the DFA are less influenced by primary production and by the stratification of the water masses. An early stage of the humification process can be hypothesised for PFA related to DFA as shown by elemental analyses and spectroscopic data. PFA collected in the bottom depths of the water column showed a relationship with age of water mass (the highest concentration was found for the oldest circulating water mass (CDW)). This relationship was not observed for DFA. Moreover, any significant difference in structure was found in the DFA and PFA extracted from samples collected at bottom depths.  相似文献
