The liquid crystalline phase behavior of sterically-stabilized goethite particles in toluene was studied using small-angle X-ray scattering. The results were compared with those from charged particles in water, with and without magnetic field: similarly rich phase behavior was found. Furthermore, the special magnetic properties were retained after coating the particles with amino-functionalized polyisobutylene chains. A remarkable difference between the aqueous and toluene samples is the latter's tendency to form gels. Smaller domains of the different liquid crystalline phases were observed and the columnar phase does not fully develop, furthermore a higher field is needed to align the full sample. 相似文献

A method for formation of photonic crystals has been proposed. The method is based on convective deposition of colloidal particles onto vertical substrates in the presence of a direct-current electric field directed perpendicular to the surface of the formed film and an alternating-current electric field applied parallel to the substrate plane. The structure and optical properties of the prepared colloidal crystals have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy, high resolution small-angle X-ray diffraction, and optical spectroscopy. 相似文献

The distribution of the scattering intensity in the reciprocal space for natural and artificial opals has been reconstructed from a set of small-angle X-ray diffraction patterns. The resulting three-dimensional intensity maps are used to analyze the defect structure of opals. The structure of artificial opals can be satisfactorily described in the Wilson probability model with the prevalence of layers in the fcc environment. The diffraction patterns observed for a natural opal confirm the presence of sufficiently long unequally occupied fcc domains. 相似文献

The vertical deposition technique for creating crystalline microstructures is applied for the first time to nonspherical colloids in the form of hollow silica cubes. Controlled deposition of the cubes results in large crystalline films with variable symmetry. The microstructures are characterized in detail with scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. In single layers of cubes, distorted square to hexagonal ordered arrays are formed. For multilayered crystals, the intralayer ordering is predominantly hexagonal with a hollow site stacking, similar to that of the face centered cubic lattice for spheres. Additionally, a distorted square arrangement in the layers is also found to form under certain conditions. These crystalline films are promising for various applications such as photonic materials. 相似文献

Cu–Zn–Sn shape memory alloy strips with composition range of 13.70–46.30 mass% Sn were fabricated by electrodepositing Sn
on a shim brass surface and then subsequently annealed at a constant temperature of 400 °C for 120 min under flowing nitrogen.
Subjecting the Sn-plated strips to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed that the austenitic start (A
s) temperature was essentially constant at 225 °C while the martensite start (M
s) temperature was consistently within the 221.5–222 °C interval. Austenite to martensite phase transformation showed two distinct
peaks on the DSC thermogram which can be attributed to the non-homogeneity of the bulk Cu–Zn–Sn ternary alloy. The latent
heats of cooling and heating were found to increase with the mass% Sn plated on the shim brass. Effect of annealing temperature
was also investigated wherein strips with an essentially constant composition of 26 mass% Sn were annealed at a temperature
range of 350–420 °C for 120 min under flowing nitrogen. Varying the annealing temperature has no significant effect on the
transformation temperatures of the ternary alloy. 相似文献

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers added to microemulsions proved to enhance the efficiency of surfactants dramatically. The complementary effect of homopolymers is considered in the current work. A possible application of the homopolymer addition could be the viscosity tuning of the microemulsion without changing the considered bicontinuous phase. Furthermore, (homo)polymers are added for many other reasons in technical applications. A theory by Eisenriegler predicts a decreased efficiency when homopolymers are added. In further experiments, the simultaneous addition of homopolymers and diblock copolymers probes whether the two opposite effects superpose and allow for a compensation. Then, efficiency and viscosity are adjustable independently. Experimentally, phase diagrams are investigated and the microscopic structure is measured by small-angle neutron scattering. Within the presented models, both experimental methods are compared and discussed on the basis of the surfactant membrane bending moduli. The homopolymer effect is about 7 times larger than that theoretically predicted, and the superposition of the two polymer effects allows for a compensation with an optionally tunable viscosity. 相似文献

Experimental observations of time-delay-induced amplitude death in two coupled nonlinear electronic circuits that are individually capable of exhibiting limit-cycle oscillations are described. The existence of multiply connected death islands in the parameter space of coupling strength and time delay for coupled identical oscillators is established. The existence of such regions was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998); Physica (Amsterdam) 129D, 15 (1999)]. The experiments also reveal the occurrence of multiple frequency states, frequency suppression of oscillations with increased time delay, and the onset of both in-phase and antiphase collective oscillations. 相似文献
