Continuous spectral decompositions of Abelian group actions on -algebras

Let G be a locally compact Abelian group. Following Ruy Exel, we view Fell bundles over the Pontrjagin dual group of G as continuous spectral decompositions of G-actions on C^*-algebras. We classify such spectral decompositions using certain dense subspaces related to Marc Rieffel's theory of square-integrability. There is a unique continuous spectral decomposition if the group acts properly on the primitive ideal space of the C^*-algebra. But there are also examples of group actions without or with several inequivalent spectral decompositions.     

Cutting planes,connectivity, and threshold logic

Originating from work in operations research the cutting plane refutation systemCP is an extension of resolution, where unsatisfiable propositional logic formulas in conjunctive normal form are recognized by showing the non-existence of boolean solutions to associated families of linear inequalities. Polynomial sizeCP proofs are given for the undirecteds-t connectivity principle. The subsystemsCP _q ofCP, forq2, are shown to be polynomially equivalent toCP, thus answering problem 19 from the list of open problems of [8]. We present a normal form theorem forCP ₂-proofs and thereby for arbitraryCP-proofs. As a corollary, we show that the coefficients and constant terms in arbitrary cutting plane proofs may be exponentially bounded by the number of steps in the proof, at the cost of an at most polynomial increase in the number of steps in the proof. The extensionCPLE ⁺, introduced in [9] and there shown top-simulate Frege systems, is proved to be polynomially equivalent to Frege systems. Komplexometrische Phosphatbestimmung

Zusammenfassung In Mitteilung I ist ein Verfahren für die maßanalytische Bestimmung von Phosphat in reinen Lösungen von Phosphorsäure oder Alkaliphosphaten beschrieben worden, bei dem Phosphat als Ammoniumzinkphosphat gefällt und nach der Auflösung von Ammoniumzinkphosphat Zink komplexometrisch titriert wird.In Mitteilung II wird dieses Verfahren auf technisch wichtige Produkte angewendet. Bei dieser Anwendung sind der maßanalytischen Bestimmung Aufschlüsse und Fällungen von Ammoniumphosphormolybdat bzw. Ammoniummagnesiumphosphat vorgeschaltet.Es werden Arbeitsvorschriften für die Überführung von Ammoniumphosphormolybdat bzw. Ammoniummagnesiumphosphat in Ammoniumzinkphosphat gegeben, das nach der Auflösung wie in Mitteilung I titriert werden kann.Die Leistungsfähigkeit des Verfahrens wird diskutiert. Es ist schneller als ein Verfahren mit gravimetrischer Endbestimmung. Es ist zur Serienanalyse geeignet.Die Untersuchung wurde mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft durchgeführt.I. Hindered organoboron groups in organic synthesis. 17 [1]. Synthesis of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenylborane (TripBH2)2, a useful alternative to thexylborane

2,4,6-Triisopropylphenylborane (tripylborane, TripBH₂) resembles thexylborane in having a single, bulky organic group attached to boron, but the group is aromatic rather than aliphatic. The compound has been synthesized by two alternative routes, one involving direct reduction of dimethoxytripylborane and the other involving redistribution between ditripylborane and borane. It is a solid which is considerably more stable than thexylborane.     

Modulation gap detection: effects of modulation rate, carrier separation, and mode of presentation.

Modulation gap detection (MGD) is a procedure that measures the sensitivity to an interruption in the modulation pattern imposed upon one or more carrier frequencies. The MGD task was developed to test conditions where a temporal event traverses frequency, but without a concomitant interruption in the spectral continuity of the stimulus. This contrasts with across-frequency gap detection where there is an inherent spectral discontinuity associated with the temporal gap, and where there is a marked decline in performance when the markers of the temporal gap are widely separated in frequency. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a wideband temporal analysis will be facilitated if there exists a spectral continuity throughout the temporal event. Experiment 1 established the procedure of MGD and indicated that a modulation rate of 8 Hz was optimal for the task. Experiment 2 showed that performance declined markedly when the carrier frequencies of the modulation markers were widely separated in frequency. This finding indicates that spectral continuity across the temporal event is not a sufficient prerequisite for the auditory system to undertake a wideband temporal analysis. Experiment 3 revealed that dichotic MGD also results in poor performance, similar to that seen for widely separated carrier frequencies in the monaural case. This supports the hypothesis that the "channels" across which temporal events are poorly processed do not necessarily correspond to peripheral frequency channels.     

Light absorption of dye aggregates. Coupled oscillator and electron gas model for aggregates formed from polyene type monomers

A modified coupled oscillator model using extended dipoles in place of each double bond is found to be superior to the point dipole model and gives absorption shifts for polyenic dye aggregates in agreement with electron gas calculations and with experimental evi     

Regulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 after central and peripheral nerve lesions

Background  

Interruption of mature axons activates a cascade of events in neuronal cell bodies which leads to various outcomes from functional regeneration in the PNS to the failure of any significant regeneration in the CNS. One factor which seems to play an important role in the molecular programs after axotomy is the stearoyl Coenzyme A-desaturase-1 (SCD-1). This enzyme is needed for the conversion of stearate into oleate. Beside its role in membrane synthesis, oleate could act as a neurotrophic factor, involved in signal transduction pathways via activation of protein kinases C.     

A comparison of threshold estimation methods in children 6-11 years of age

Estimating detection threshold for auditory stimuli in children can be problematic because of lapses in attention and the time limits usually imposed by scheduling restrictions or fatigue. Data reported here were collected to compare the stability of threshold estimation procedures in testing children ages 6 to 11 in a three-alternative, forced-choice paradigm. Stimuli consisted of a 1-kHz tonal signal and a Gaussian noise masker, bandpass filtered between 500-2,000 Hz and presented at 25-dB spectrum level. The signal was either presented for 400 ms in the presence of a continuous masker (simultaneous masking) or for 10 ms just prior to a 400-ms masker (backward masking). For each masking paradigm the 79% correct threshold was assessed via each of three procedures: 3-down, 1-up adaptive staircase (Levitt), maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), and method of constant stimuli. Percent correct was measured at the end of the study for a signal 10 dB above the previously determined threshold in order to estimate the most appropriate psychometric function asymptote for fitting data collected via the method of constant stimuli. Both the MLE and Levitt procedures produced equally stable threshold estimates for both conditions and age groups. This was the case despite considerable variability in backward-masking thresholds.

Fully functional HIV-1-specific CD8 and CD4 effector T-cell responses are vital to the containment of viral activity and disease progression. These responses are lacking in HIV-1-infected patients with progressive disease. We attempted to augment fully functional HIV-1-specific CD8 and CD4 effector T-cell responses in patients with advanced chronic HIV-1 infection.
