Diffraction of elastic waves by a free wedge. Reduction to a singular integral equation

The problem of diffraction of a plane elastic wave by a free wedge is considered. Long-range correlations in the structure of fractal films

Hierarchically granulated films formed on a material subjected to the action of a high-temperature plasma have been microscopically studied. The statistical self-similarity of the structure of the surface from nanoscale to macroscale, as well as long-range correlations in the relief that are due to the statistically inhomogeneous structure of granularity, has been revealed.

Extension of Planck’s law to steady heat flux across nanoscale gaps

Recent experiments report that the radiative heat conductance through a narrow vacuum gap between two flat surfaces increases as the inverse square of the width of the gap. Such a significant increase of thermal conductivity has attracted much interest because of numerous promising applications in nanoscale heat transfer and because of the lack of its theoretical explanation. It is shown here that the radiative heat transport across narrow layers can be described in terms of conventional theory adjusted to non-equilibrium structures with a steady heat flux.

Elastic waves in crystals and anisotropic media

The results of investigation of propagation of elastic waves in anisotropic media are discussed taking into account the two-dimensional problem of a source in an infinite medium and the Lamb problem for a half-plane. The media considered in the investigation are those for which the equations of motion under plane deformation conditions are characterized by four constants.     

Estimating the degree of anisotropy of elastic media

The refraction curves, wave-front geometry, and changes taking place in these characteristics on varying the elastic constants of anisotropic media over wide ranges are analyzed. A quantitative criterion is derived for estimating the number and disposition of the lacunas, the properties of the roots of the characteristic equation, and other important characteristics of the medium.

Magnetopause charging and transfer of momentum and energy into magnetosphere

The theory of charged current sheets is compared with plasma data of Prognoz-8, Interball-1, Polar, and Cluster satellites. The possibility of momentum and energy transfer into the magnetosphere, irrespective of magnetic field line reconnection, as a specific dynamo effect, is shown. This relates statistical properties of the turbulent boundary layers with the character of the transfer through thin boundaries.
