In previous work, we evaluated the effects of ultraviolet (UV = 280-400 nm) radiation on the early life stages of a planktonic Calanoid copepod (Calanus finmarchicus Gunnerus) and of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Both are key species in North Atlantic food webs. To further describe the potential impacts of UV exposure on the early life stages of these two species, we measured the wavelength-specific DNA damage (cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer [CPD] formation per megabase of DNA) induced under controlled experimental exposure to UV radiation. UV-induced DNA damage in C. finmarchicus and cod eggs was highest in the UV-B exposure treatments. Under the same spectral exposures, CPD loads in C. finmarchicus eggs were higher than those in cod eggs, and for both C. finmarchicus and cod embryos, CPD loads were generally lower in eggs than in larvae. Biological weighting functions (BWF) and exposure response curves that explain most of the variability in CPD production were derived from these data. Comparison of the BWF revealed significant differences in sensitivity to UV-B: C. finmarchicus is more sensitive than cod, and larvae are more sensitive than eggs. This is consistent with the raw CPD values. Shapes of the BWF were similar to each other and to a quantitative action spectrum for damage to T7 bacteriophage DNA that is unshielded by cellular material. The strong similarities in the shapes of the weighting functions are not consistent with photoprotection by UV-absorbing compounds, which would generate features in BWF corresponding to absorption bands. The BWF reported in this study were applied to assess the mortality that would result from accumulation of a given CPD load: for both C. finmarchicus and cod eggs, an increased load of 10 CPD Mb(-1) of DNA due to UV exposure would result in approximately 10% mortality.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr were exposed in two outdoor experiments, ranging in duration from 52 to 137 days, to spectral treatments: (1) natural sunlight (=present ambient UVB level), (2) solar radiation supplemented with enhanced UVB radiation from lamps simulating 20% or 8% stratospheric ozone loss or (3) UVB-depleted sunlight achieved by screening with Mylar-D film. The growth, condition and immune function of the salmon were quantified after treatments. Exposure to enhanced UVB radiation retarded growth, and decreased hematocrit value and plasma protein concentration. Further, enhanced UVB radiation affected plasma immunoglobulin concentration. The results demonstrate that juvenile Atlantic salmon are not able to fully adapt to increased ambient UVB levels in long-term exposures, and the interference with immune system function suggests a negative effect of UVB on disease resistance in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

A combined fit is performed to the BABAR and Belle measurements of the e^+e^- →φπ^+π^- and φf0(980) cross sections for center-of-mass energy between threshold and 3.0 GeV. The resonance parameters of the φ(1680) and Y(2175) are determined. The mass is (1681-12^+10) MeV/c^2 and the width is (221-24^+34) MeV/c^2 for the φ(1680), and the mass is (2117-49^+59) MeV/c^2 and the width is (164-80^+69) MeV/c^2 for the Y(2175). This information will shed light on the understanding of the nature of the excited φ and Y states observed in e+e- annihilation.  相似文献

The effect of UV radiation (UVR) on juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was assessed by measuring the fatty acid (FA) profiles of muscle, dorsal and ventral skin, and ocular tissues following 4-month long exposures to four different UVR treatments in outdoor rearing tanks. Fish were fed two different diets (Anchovy- and Herring-oil based) that differed in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations. Anchovy-fed salmon had higher concentrations of ALA (alpha-linoleic acid; 18:3n-3), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; 20:5n-3) and DPA (docosapentaenoic acid, 22:5n-3) in their muscle tissues than fish fed the Herring feed. Fish subjected to enhanced UVB levels had higher concentrations of LIN (linolenic acid, 18:2n-6) and ALA, total omega-6 FA and SAFA (saturated fatty acids) in their tissues compared with fish in reduced UV treatments. Concentrations of ALA, LIN, GLA (gamma-linolenic acid; 18:3n-6), EPA, PUFA and total FA were higher in ventral skin of fish exposed to enhanced UVB compared with fish in reduced UV treatments. Salmon exposed to reduced UV weighed more per-unit-length than fish exposed to ambient sunlight. The FA profiles suggest that fish exposed to UV radiation were more quiescent than fish in the reduced UV treatments resulting in a buildup of catabolic substrates.  相似文献

A degree of resistance to photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been induced in radiation-induced fibrosarcoma-1 (RIF-1) tumor cells by repeated photodynamic treatment with Photofrin (4 or 18 h incubation) in vitro to the 0.1-1% survival level, followed by regrowth from single surviving colonies. The resistance is shown as increased cell survival in the strain designated RIF-8A, compared to the wild-type RIF-1 cells, when exposed to increasing Photofrin concentration for 18 h incubation and fixed light exposure. No difference was found between RIF-1 and RIF-8A in the uptake of Photofrin per unit cell volume at 18 h incubation. Resistance to PDT was also observed in Chinese hamster ovary-multi-drug resistant (CHO-MDR) cells compared to the wild-type CHO cells, possibly associated with decreased cellular concentration of Photofrin in the former. By contrast, the PDT-resistant RIF-8A cells did not show any cross-resistance to Adriamycin, nor was there any significant drug concentration difference between RIF-1 and RIF-8A. These findings suggest that different mechanisms are responsible for PDT-induced resistance and multi-drug resistance.  相似文献
