The results of two interlaboratory comparisons of acid number determinations in used motor oils are discussed. It is shown
that the comparability of the measurement results is not as good as that required by known standards for petroleum products.
The problem is motor oil contaminants which accumulated during use, and which are the source of a matrix effect in the acid
number determination. The standard methods’ drawbacks are analyzed and some improvements are proposed. Repeatability and accuracy
of the improved methods are evaluated.

A beam of relativistic antihydrogen atoms — the bound state (
e+) — can be created by circulating the beam of an antiproton storage ring through an internal gas target. An antiproton which
passes through the Coulomb field of a nucleus will create e+e− pairs, and antihydrogen will form when a positron is created in a bound instead of continuum state about the antiproton.
The cross section for this process is roughly 3Z
2 pb for antiproton momenta about 6 GeV/c. A sample of 600 antihydrogen atoms in a low-emittance, neutral beam will be made in 1995 as an accidental byproduct of Fermilab
experiment E760. We describe a simple experiment, Fermilab Proposal P862, which can detect this beam, and outline how a sample
of a few-104 atoms can be used to measure the antihydrogen Lamb shift to 1 %.

Ground-state hyperfine splittings in hydrogen and muonium are very well measured. Their difference, after correcting for magnetic moment and reduced mass effects, is due solely to proton structure-the large QED contributions for a pointlike nucleus essentially cancel. The rescaled hyperfine difference depends on the Zemach radius, a fundamental measure of the proton, computed as an integral over a product of electric and magnetic proton form factors. The determination of the Zemach radius, (1.019+/-0.016) fm, from atomic physics tightly constrains fits to accelerator measurements of proton form factors. Conversely, we can use muonium data to extract an experimental value for QED corrections to hydrogenic hyperfine data. There is a significant discrepancy between measurement and theory, in the same direction as a corresponding discrepancy in positronium. 相似文献

We consider the model of a Fermi-Bose mixture with strong hard-core repulsion between particles of the same sort and attraction between particles of different sorts. In this case, in addition to the standard anomalous averages of the type 〈b〉, 〈bb〉, and 〈cc〉, pairing between fermions and bosons of the type 〈bc〉 is possible. This pairing corresponds to creation of composite fermions in the system. At low temperatures and equal densities of fermions and bosons, composite fermions are further paired into quartets. At higher temperatures, trios consisting of composite fermions and elementary bosons are also present in the system. Our investigations are important in connection with the recent observation of weakly bound dimers in magnetic and optical dipole traps at ultralow temperatures and with the observation of collapse of a Fermi gas in an attractive Fermi-Bose mixture of neutral particles. 相似文献
