We use game theory techniques to automatically compute improved lower bounds on the competitive ratio for the bin stretching problem. Using these techniques, we improve the best lower bound for this problem to 19/14. In this paper we consider an ignition-temperature zero-order reaction model of thermo-diffusive combustion. This model describes the dynamics of thick flames, which have recently received considerable attention in the physical and engineering literature. The model admits a unique (up to translations) planar travelling wave solution. This travelling wave solution is quite different from those usually studied in combustion theory. The main qualitative feature of this travelling wave is that it has two interfaces: the ignition interface where the ignition temperature is attained and the trailing interface where the concentration of deficient reactants reaches zero. We give a new mathematical framework for studying the cellular instability of such travelling front solutions. Our approach allows the analysis of a free boundary problem to be converted into the analysis of a boundary value problem having a fully nonlinear system of parabolic equations. The latter is very suitable for both mathematical and numerical analysis. We prove the existence of a critical Lewis number such that the travelling wave solution is stable for values of Lewis number below the critical one and is unstable for Lewis numbers that exceed this critical value. Finally, we discuss the results of numerical simulations of a fully nonlinear system that describes the perturbation dynamics of planar fronts. These simulations reveal, in particular, some very interesting ‘two-cell’ steady patterns of curved combustion fronts. 相似文献

The concept of a generalized extinction cross-section introduced in a previous paper is given in detail and exemplified by the problem of scattering by an elastic cylinder embedded in a viscoelastic matrix. It is shown that under certain conditions the presence of inclusion may have a supporting effect on wave propagation (negative extinction). The derived low-frequency expansions indicate that the Rayleigh law may not hold in the case of a lossy medium. Numerical results as well as discussions concerning separation between scattering and intrinsic viscoelastic losses are also given. 相似文献

A theoretical analysis of direct contact hygroscopic-condensation of cold vapor on hot films is presented. The condensation of the relatively low temperature, low pressure, vapors on a hot film of an hygroscopic brine solution may occur due to the reduced vapor pressure of a sufficiently concentrated solution. The driving force for condensation is the difference between the partial pressure of water in the brine and the partial pressure of the condensing water vapor. The condensation is also governed by simultaneous mass transfer mechanisms, due to a non-isothermal absorption, with a possible opposing thermal driving force in the condensing vapor phase. The overall performance is determined by the accumulating effects of the various resistances to heat and mass transfer. The present study is aimed to elucidate the controlling mechanisms associated with this absorption-condensation process, and suggest overall transfer rates at the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. 相似文献
